Chapter 8 - What the Numbers Said
Melanie did not shout.
She did not insult Ryan or his family.
She simply read.
Mortgage: paid by Melanie.
Property taxes: paid by Melanie.
Utilities: ninety-four percent paid by Melanie.
Groceries: ninety-one percent.
Home repairs: one hundred percent.
Family support transfers: seventeen thousand four hundred dollars, all drawn from income Melanie earned.
Ryan interrupted twice.
The first time, he said the marriage made the money equally his.
The second time, he accused Melanie of keeping score.
His mother silenced him.
“Let her finish.”
Melanie continued.
She showed Tyler the transfer for his truck.
“I thought Ryan paid that,” Tyler said.
“So did I,” Ryan’s sister whispered about her exam fee.
Melanie’s voice remained steady.
“He told each of you he was helping. He told me we had no choice because family was counting on us. Then he accepted the gratitude.”
Ryan’s face reddened.
“You agreed to all of it.”
“I agreed because you misrepresented our finances and pressured me privately. I did not agree to let you build a reputation with my work.”
His mother sat slowly at the table.
For years, Melanie had imagined this woman as part of the problem.
Now Ryan’s mother looked older than she had that morning.
“I thanked you once,” she said to Ryan. “You let me believe you were sacrificing for me.”
Ryan looked around the room for support.
He found only silence.
Melanie lifted the final envelope.
