Chapter 10 - A Table Set for One

Ryan moved out on the twenty-eighth day.

His mother helped him pack.

Before leaving, she found Melanie in the kitchen and placed an envelope beside the coffee mug.

Inside was a check for part of the money Melanie had unknowingly provided over the years.

“I can’t repay all of it,” she said. “But I can repay what I can.”

Melanie pushed the envelope back.

“Keep it.”

Ryan’s mother shook her head. “No. I need to do this. I should have asked more questions.”

Melanie accepted the envelope.

Tyler later arranged monthly payments for the truck repair. Danielle sent a letter thanking Melanie for the exam fee and apologizing for every holiday she had arrived empty-handed.

Not everyone apologized.

Aunt Carol said Melanie had destroyed the family.

One cousin claimed finances should stay private.

Melanie learned that people often defend secrecy when truth makes them uncomfortable.

The divorce took nine months.

Ryan found a job, lost it, then found another. Through attorneys, he argued that he deserved part of the house. The records in the green folder ended most of that argument.

Melanie kept her home.

She repainted the kitchen a warm cream and removed the oversized television Ryan had insisted belonged above the breakfast nook. She replaced it with shelves holding cookbooks, plants, and a framed photograph of Aunt Judith.

On the first anniversary of the birthday confrontation, Melanie invited six people to dinner.

They were friends from work, Nora Bennett, and Danielle, who had become a nurse.

Everyone brought something.

Bread. Salad. Flowers. Dessert. A bottle of sparkling cider.

Melanie cooked because she wanted to, not because anyone expected it.

Before they ate, Danielle raised her glass.

“To the woman who finally charged us for dinner.”

Everyone laughed, including Melanie.

After the guests left, she stood alone in the quiet kitchen.

There were dishes in the sink, crumbs on the table, and leftovers in the refrigerator.

On the top shelf sat one small container of Caesar salad.

Across the lid, Melanie had written her name.

She smiled, closed the refrigerator, and turned off the light.

The salad was still there the next morning.
