Chapter 1 - The Salad With Her Name

Three days earlier, Melanie had come home after a ten-hour shift and found her salad missing.
It had been the only thing she had bought for herself that week.
The refrigerator was usually packed with food for Ryan: sandwich meat, yogurt, fruit, soda, frozen meals, and ingredients for the dinners he expected her to cook. Melanie often ate whatever remained after everyone else was satisfied.
That Tuesday, she had written her name on the salad because she was tired, hungry, and planning to eat it before finishing payroll reports at home.
The empty container was in the trash.
Ryan sat on the couch, watching a game.
“Did you eat my salad?” she asked.
He barely looked up. “Yeah. I was hungry.”
“That was my dinner.”
“You can make something.”
“There’s nothing quick left.”
Ryan shrugged. “Then buy more food.”
Melanie stared at him.
He turned up the television. “Honestly, Mel, adults should buy their own food. Stop acting like I stole something important.”
The sentence was careless. Casual. He had no idea it would become the final crack in a structure already collapsing.
The next morning, Ryan texted her a list for his birthday dinner.
Prime rib. Garlic potatoes. Green beans. Two appetizers. Chocolate cake. Beer. Soda. Ice.
He added, My family will be there at noon Saturday. Make enough for sixteen.
Melanie read the message twice.
Then she opened her banking app.
For the first time in years, she did not calculate how much overtime she would need to cover the cost.
She simply replied, Anyone who wants to eat should buy their own food.

Ryan sent back a laughing emoji.
He thought she was joking.
