THE FOLDER SHE BURIED / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Second Delivery

The main case against Vivian, Conrad and Dr. Rowe moved forward.

The evidence was overwhelming.

Vivian accepted responsibility for arranging Lucy’s false identity and confinement.

Conrad faced additional financial charges after investigators uncovered years of fraudulent Hale-Vale transactions.

Dr. Rowe agreed to identify every family that had used St. Marrow’s to hide an unwanted relative.

Natalie entered a formal cooperation agreement and resigned from every Vale company position.

For the first time in months, Lucy could walk through the Grand Hale lobby without hiding her face.

The staff no longer called her Lena.

They called her Mrs. Hale, although Lucy quietly told those closest to her that Lucy was enough.

Alexander never asked her to return to the penthouse.

Instead, he met her for breakfast every morning in the small café across from the hotel.

They discussed Hope, the investigation and the restoration project.

They did not pretend the marriage had healed.

They began rebuilding it anyway.

One morning, Lucy placed a key beside Alexander’s coffee.

He recognized it as the spare key to her apartment.

“Is this what I think it is?”

“It means you can come in without waiting in the hallway.”

He looked at her carefully.

“It doesn’t mean everything is forgiven.”

“I know.”

“It means I’m tired of letting Vivian’s choices decide how much of our life we get back.”

Alexander closed his hand around the key.

“That is more than I deserve.”

“Then earn the rest.”

He smiled for the first time without grief beneath it.

That afternoon, Lucy and Mara entered the restored archive beneath the ballroom.

The surviving documents had been cataloged. The red ledgers were placed in secure evidence storage. Every hidden hospital file had been turned over to investigators.

Only one cabinet remained unopened.

It had been found behind a second false wall in the underground residence.

The lock did not match any Hale key.

Samuel Mercer’s initials were carved into the back.

Lucy remembered a box of her father’s tools stored in her apartment.

Among them was a thin steel key she had always believed belonged to an old drafting cabinet.

It opened the lock.

Inside was a single brown folder.

Lucy froze.

The label resembled the one that had begun everything.

But the wording was different.

ALEXANDER HALE — SECOND DELIVERY

Mara stood beside her.

“Should we call Alexander?”

Lucy touched the folder.

“Yes.”

Alexander arrived with Julian and two investigators.

No one opened the folder until the room had been photographed and documented.

Inside was a hospital bracelet.

BABY HALE B.

A recent photograph showed an older man standing on the balcony of a coastal house.

His face was partially turned away, but Alexander recognized the posture.

Thomas Hale.

On the back was a date from eleven days earlier.

Beneath the photograph lay a letter addressed to Lucy.

She unfolded it.

Lucy,

Vivian believed your child would activate the Hale trust.

She was wrong.

The trust did not open because Hope exists.

It opened because two verified Hale bloodlines entered the same building.

Lucy stopped reading.

Alexander leaned closer.

“Two bloodlines?”

The next sentence had been cut from the page.

Only the final paragraph remained.

The man you know as Alexander Hale was delivered to Vivian thirty-two years ago.

The child called Daniel was delivered to another family.

But neither child was the first son born that night.

Alexander’s face went still.

Mara examined the baby bracelet.

“There were three children?”

Before anyone could answer, the archive telephone rang.

The phone was an antique model connected to a line that should have been disconnected decades earlier.

Alexander lifted the receiver.

No one spoke at first.

Then a man breathed slowly on the other end.

Alexander pressed the speaker button.

“Who is this?”

The man’s voice sounded older, calm and strangely familiar.

“Ask Lucy to look beneath the lining of the folder.”

Lucy tore open the inner fabric.

A small memory card fell into her palm.

“What is on it?” Alexander demanded.

“The delivery-room recording.”

“From my birth?”

“From all three births.”

Alexander gripped the edge of the table.

“Are you Thomas Hale?”

The caller ignored the question.

“Vivian signed the order that erased Lucy. Conrad paid the hospital. Rowe locked the door. You know what they did.”

His voice lowered.

“But you still do not know who taught them how.”

Lucy looked at the photograph of Thomas.

“Where are you?”

“Closer than Vivian believes.”

“Why did you target my baby?”

“I did not target Hope. I protected her from the person who wants the final Hale heir brought home.”

Alexander’s expression hardened.

“Who is the final heir?”

A faint knock came through the telephone line.

The caller whispered, “He has arrived.”

The connection ended.

At the same moment, the security lights outside the archive changed from green to red.

The elevator began descending toward them.

Alexander moved in front of Lucy.

Mara backed toward the emergency exit.

The floor indicator changed.

B4.

B3.

B2.

The Grand Hale had no registered level below B2.

Still, the numbers continued.

B1.

G.

The elevator stopped.

The doors remained closed.

A small envelope slid through the narrow gap beneath them.

Alexander picked it up.

Written across the front were five words.

FOR THE BROTHER WHO REPLACED ME

Lucy stared at him.

“Alexander, don’t open it.”

A sound came from inside the elevator.

Not movement.

Not machinery.

A baby crying.

Alexander tore open the envelope.

Inside was another hospital photograph and a key marked with the number 3.

May you like

Before he could turn the photograph over, someone on the other side of the elevator doors spoke his name.

The voice was identical to his own.
