Chapter 14 - The Trust Opens

Three weeks later, the Hale board gathered inside the Grand Hale Hotel.
Reporters filled the lobby.
The scandal surrounding St. Marrow’s had become national news. Several wealthy families came forward with stories of relatives hidden under false names and controlled through fraudulent medical authorizations.
Dr. Rowe offered prosecutors information in exchange for a reduced sentence.
He confirmed Conrad’s payments and Vivian’s orders.
He also admitted that a third party had contacted him after Lucy escaped.
The caller used Thomas Hale’s old authorization code.
The caller knew Lucy’s location before Vivian did.
Dr. Rowe never saw the person’s face.
Payments arrived through Northstar Custodial.
Alexander entered the boardroom with Lucy beside him.
She wore a dark blue dress and carried the original brown folder.
Natalie sat with her attorney near the far wall, present under the terms of her cooperation agreement.
Conrad’s seat remained empty.
Vivian’s chair had been removed entirely.
Julian opened the meeting.
“The Hale succession clause has been legally activated following verified confirmation of Alexander Hale’s biological descendant.”
The temporary trustees objected.
One claimed the child had not yet been born.
Julian placed the trust documents on the table.
“The clause activates upon verified viable pregnancy, not birth. The trustees concealed this wording from Mr. Hale.”
Alexander looked toward the three remaining trustees.
“You knew.”
None answered.
Lucy understood at last.
Vivian did not need to wait for Hope’s birth to lose control.
She had lost it the moment the pregnancy was medically confirmed.
That was why she had acted at the twelve-week ultrasound.
Julian continued.
“Control of the Hale Group transfers immediately to Alexander Hale.”
The vote became ceremonial.
The merger with Vale International was terminated.
Every Northstar loan would be investigated.
An independent committee would review the trust’s private accounts.
Alexander made his first decision as controlling shareholder.
He dissolved the temporary trustee structure.
His second decision created a fund for every patient illegally confined through St. Marrow’s.
His third decision surprised the room.
He appointed Lucy to oversee the restoration of the Grand Hale’s concealed archives.
A trustee objected.
“Mrs. Hale has no corporate experience.”
Lucy placed the brown folder on the table.
“I found the records your security teams, attorneys and executives failed to find for seven months.”
No one objected again.
After the meeting, Natalie approached Lucy in the lobby.
Security remained close.
“I know you have no reason to believe me,” Natalie said, “but I didn’t know Vivian planned to tell Alexander the baby died.”
“You knew she planned to remove me.”
“I thought she would pay you to leave.”
“And you were comfortable with that.”
Natalie lowered her eyes.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Alexander was supposed to marry me.”
“He was never yours.”
“I know that now.”
Lucy looked at the woman who had laughed at her on the marble floor.
“Do you?”
Natalie removed a sealed page from her handbag.
“I found this inside my father’s safe.”
Lucy did not take it immediately.
“What is it?”
“The missing page from Vivian’s hospital order.”
“Why wasn’t it given to the police?”
“My father hid it before he was arrested.”
Lucy opened the page.
It contained instructions for the moment Lucy’s pregnancy was verified.
Notify T. Hale through Northstar channel.
Do not terminate or endanger the pregnancy.
Maintain observation until the heir can be transferred.
Lucy’s stomach tightened.
“Transferred to whom?”
Natalie shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
At the bottom was an acknowledgment signature.
Not Vivian’s.
Not Conrad’s.
Thomas Hale.
Lucy brought the page to Alexander.
He stared at his father’s signature.
“It could be forged.”
“It could.”
“But you don’t believe that.”
“No.”
Alexander looked toward the magnolia courtyard.
Police had excavated the area where Vivian buried the folder. Beneath the soil, they found a small metal box.
It had not yet been opened.
Investigators brought it into the ballroom and placed it on a table.
Vivian arrived under police supervision to identify it.
She looked exhausted.
Alexander showed her the missing hospital page.
“Is this my father’s signature?”
Vivian examined it.
“Yes.”
“Could someone copy it?”
“Of course.”
“Would they know his Northstar authorization code?”
Vivian’s face tightened.
“No.”
An investigator opened the metal box.
Inside were original hospital records, an old cassette tape and a photograph of two newborn boys.
Vivian stepped backward.
Alexander picked up the photograph.
One child wore a bracelet labeled ALEXANDER.
The other wore a bracelet labeled DANIEL.
On the back was a date and location.
St. Aurelia Hospital.
Below it, someone had recently written:
ONE HEIR WAS HIDDEN.
THE OTHER WAS PREPARED.
Alexander turned toward Vivian.
“What does prepared mean?”
Vivian stared at the photograph.
“I don’t know.”
The cassette tape was placed into an old player.
Static filled the ballroom.
Then Thomas Hale’s voice emerged.
“If Alexander hears this, the trust has opened and Vivian has failed to keep the next child hidden.”
Alexander moved closer to the speaker.
Thomas continued.
“Do not trust Northstar. Do not trust the trustees. Most importantly, do not believe Daniel was the son I took away.”
The recording clicked off.
Everyone looked toward Vivian.
She whispered, “That is impossible.”

Alexander rewound the tape.
The rest had been erased.
