THE FOLDER SHE BURIED / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - The Mother Who Lost Control

The police found Conrad and Natalie in a vacant Vale office near the waterfront.

Both were alive.

The loud sound heard over the video feed had come from Conrad firing at the ceiling after the shadowed visitor appeared.

The unidentified man escaped before police arrived.

Natalie surrendered the pages she had removed from Lucy’s folder.

They proved that Conrad had paid Dr. Rowe to isolate Lucy until Alexander approved the merger. Vivian had added the false-name order and the instructions to report that the pregnancy had ended.

Conrad was arrested on charges connected to fraud, unlawful confinement, evidence destruction and conspiracy.

Dr. Rowe attempted to leave the country on a private flight.

He was arrested before takeoff.

St. Marrow’s was searched.

Investigators found dozens of falsified patient files and secret financial records.

Natalie agreed to cooperate. Her testimony confirmed that she had created the false Zurich crisis, accessed Alexander’s private schedule and helped Vivian spread the story that Lucy had abandoned him.

She claimed she had never intended for Lucy to be harmed.

Lucy did not forgive her.

She also did not need to.

Vivian was questioned for fourteen hours.

Alexander waited outside the police interview room.

When Vivian finally emerged, she was not wearing handcuffs. Her attorneys had negotiated temporary release while prosecutors reviewed the evidence.

Alexander stood.

“You confessed.”

“I admitted signing the transfer order.”

“You imprisoned my wife.”

“I believed I could move her somewhere safe until the trust problem was resolved.”

“Safe from whom?”

“From whoever controls Northstar.”

“You told me my child was dead.”

Vivian looked toward Lucy, who sat beside Mara at the end of the corridor.

“I cannot undo that.”

“No.”

Alexander’s voice broke slightly.

“You cannot.”

Vivian stepped closer to him.

“I lost Daniel because I trusted Thomas’s plan. Every message I received after his disappearance warned me that a new Hale child would reopen the war he began.”

“So you chose to make me lose mine.”

“I chose the only method I believed would keep the child hidden.”

“You didn’t protect the child. You protected your position.”

Vivian did not deny it.

Alexander removed a ring bearing the Hale family crest.

It had belonged to his grandfather and symbolized the authority of the acting family trustee.

He placed it on the table between them.

“You are removed from every Hale board, trust committee and company position effective immediately.”

“You cannot remove me from the family.”

“No. But I can remove the family from your control.”

Vivian looked at him for a long time.

Then she turned toward Lucy.

“I am sorry.”

Lucy rose carefully.

“Are you sorry that you did it, or sorry that Alexander knows?”

Vivian did not answer.

“That is what I thought.”

The police escorted Vivian away through a private exit.

That evening, Alexander returned to the Grand Hale’s ballroom.

The gala had been canceled. Staff removed decorations from tables that had never been used.

Lucy stood near the windows overlooking the magnolia courtyard.

Alexander approached but stopped several feet away.

“The board accepted my motion,” he said. “Vivian and Conrad are out. The merger is dead.”

“Good.”

“The hospital confirmed the pregnancy records. Julian has filed a legal declaration restoring your identity and documenting everything that happened.”

Lucy nodded.

“And St. Marrow’s?”

“Closed pending investigation.”

“Mara?”

“I offered her any position she wants within the Hale medical foundation.”

Lucy smiled faintly. “She’ll refuse.”

“She already did.”

Silence settled between them.

Alexander looked at her stomach.

“Do you know whether it’s a boy or a girl?”

“Yes.”

“Can I ask?”

“You can ask.”

He waited.

Lucy almost smiled again.

“It’s a girl.”

Emotion crossed his face.

“A daughter.”

“A daughter.”

“Does she have a name?”

“I chose one while I was at St. Marrow’s.”

“What is it?”

“Hope.”

Alexander lowered his head.

“Of course you did.”

Lucy watched him struggle for words.

“I don’t expect you to come home,” he said at last.

“I don’t know where home is anymore.”

“I’ll give you the penthouse.”

“I don’t want the penthouse.”

“Then any place you choose.”

“You’re trying to solve this with property.”

“I’m trying to make certain you are safe.”

“There it is again.”

He stopped.

Lucy continued.

“I do need safety. I need medical care. I need time. But I also need you to understand that I am not a problem to be transferred into a better room.”

“You’re right.”

“I don’t know whether I can trust you.”

“I know.”

“You believed their version of me.”

“I did.”

“You allowed Natalie into our life.”

“I did.”

“You stopped saying my name.”

Alexander looked at her.

“Lucy.”

May you like

Her eyes filled, but she did not look away.

“I should have kept saying it,” he whispered. “Even when no one answered.”
