Chapter 6 - Chapter 6 - THE PLATEDiego’s hand tightened around the back of Valerie’s chair.

“I am asking you one final time.”“You stopped asking months ago.”A murmur moved through the relatives.Camila raised her voice.“My son married you when you had no family name and no social standing. This is how you repay him?”Valerie glanced at Elaine’s empty place in her memory—the rented houses, the grocery boxes, the years of sacrifice.“I had a name before I met your son.”Diego pulled the folder open again.“Sign.”“No.”He swept Valerie’s water glass from the table. It struck the floor and broke.Several relatives flinched, but no one intervened.Valerie’s phone vibrated again.Nora.This time, Valerie answered through her pocket by pressing the side button. The line remained open.Camila pointed at Valerie.“You entered this family with nothing but that apartment, and now you behave as though you are better than us.”“I entered this family with a career, savings, dignity, and trust,” Valerie said. “Your son has spent two years trying to take all four.”Diego grabbed a ceramic plate. For one suspended second, the room seemed to hold its breath.Rafael half-rose from his chair.“Diego—”The plate flew.It passed beside Valerie’s head and exploded against the wall.A fragment grazed her temple. She heard Sofia cry out.Valerie did not remember deciding to move. She only remembered her chair scraping backward and her hand closing around her phone.Nora was still on the line.“I heard it,” Nora said. “I’m calling.”But Valerie ended the call. She wanted Diego to hear her make the next one.She placed the emergency call on speaker and reported what had happened.Camila tried to dismiss the attack as a family argument.Diego stepped closer, warning Valerie not to destroy his life over “one mistake.”That was when Rafael moved between them.It was a small act compared with what he could have done during the previous years, but it changed the room.Once one person stopped protecting Diego, the others began to understand that silence would not protect them either.Sofia stood.“He planned this,” she said loudly.Camila turned on her.“Sit down.”“No.”Sofia’s voice trembled, but she remained standing.“He told us Valerie would sign because she wouldn’t dare embarrass the family.”Mateo pushed away from the table.“I didn’t know about the plate.”“But you knew about the pressure,” Valerie said.He could not deny it.When the police arrived, Camila attempted to meet them at the front door and control the explanation. Valerie followed with Rafael and Sofia beside her.Two officers entered the dining room. They saw the broken plate, the overturned glass, the transfer documents, and twenty frightened guests. One officer asked Valerie to explain what happened.Diego interrupted repeatedly.“She provoked everyone.”“She insulted my mother.”“I never intended to hit her.”The officer raised a hand.“Sir, step away.”Diego ignored the instruction and moved toward Valerie.Rafael blocked him again.“Enough,” Rafael said. The officers separated Diego from the group.Camila began crying dramatically.“You cannot take my son away from his own home.”Valerie touched the scratch on her temple.Diego had spent years teaching his family that consequences were acts of betrayal. That night, as an officer placed him in the back of a patrol car, Valerie finally understood something.Consequences were not betrayal. They were the truth arriving late.
