Chapter 7 - storage unit 317

The storage facility was forty minutes outside the city.
Natalie insisted on contacting police before they entered.
Ethan resisted.
Claire did not.
"If your father believed he was in danger, we don't walk blindly into the place he chose for insurance."
Detective Lena Alvarez met them there.
She was the same officer who had taken the fraud report that morning.
After hearing the recording, she treated the situation differently.
Much differently.
Unit 317 sat at the end of a concrete corridor.
Ethan inserted the key.
The lock opened.
Inside were six archive boxes, a folding table and a small metal safe.
No Calvin.
Ethan whispered, "Dad."
Claire looked at him.
He had been holding himself together with facts.
Dates.
Files.
Evidence.
But now he looked like a son searching for his missing father.
Detective Alvarez entered first.
The boxes were labeled by month.
Claire's name appeared on three.
The first contained surveillance photographs.
The second contained copies of communications between Calvin and Solomon.
The third held financial documents.
Natalie opened it.
Her face changed.
"Claire."
Claire moved closer.
There were transfer schedules.
Draft loan agreements.
Corporate resolutions.
Claire Bennett owned twenty-eight percent of Bennett Strategy Group through shares inherited after investing in the company during its early years.
Solomon owned nine percent.
Charlotte controlled twelve.
Together, Solomon and Charlotte had twenty-one.
If Solomon obtained Claire's voting proxy during a period of incapacity, they would control forty-nine percent.
A small investor named Howard Bell controlled two percent.
Claire understood immediately.
"Fifty-one."
Natalie nodded.
"They're not just after your money."
"They're after the company."
Bennett Strategy Group had been founded by Solomon's father but nearly collapsed after his death.
Claire had injected capital from her inheritance.
In exchange, she received shares.
Solomon had resented it ever since.
He loved telling people the company belonged to his family.
Legally, however, Claire was its largest individual shareholder.
Ethan opened another box.
Inside were photographs of Charlotte meeting Howard Bell.
Three meetings.
Then four.
A final photograph showed Solomon handing Howard an envelope.
Detective Alvarez photographed everything.
"What about the safe?" Claire asked.
Ethan tried the number 0317.
It opened.
Inside lay two phones.
A flash drive.
A recorder.
And a sealed envelope marked:
FOR CLAIRE BENNETT IF I CANNOT DELIVER THIS PERSONALLY.
Claire's hands went cold.
She opened it.
The letter was handwritten.
Mrs. Bennett,
You have every reason to hate me.
Your husband hired me to investigate you. I accepted money to invade your privacy and help create a case I eventually understood was false.
I cannot undo that.
I can tell you the truth.
Solomon Bennett never intended merely to divorce you.
The objective was to obtain temporary sole custody of your son, establish you as emotionally unstable, and pressure you into surrendering control of assets during a negotiated settlement.
Charlotte Bennett designed much of the strategy.
The affair with Jennifer Cole was not part of the original plan. It appears to have begun separately, though Solomon later intended to use Jennifer as a witness to support claims about your behavior.
I fabricated no direct evidence of abuse because I refused. However, I did participate in staged situations, selective documentation and misleading photography.
For that, I am responsible.
Three weeks ago, Solomon instructed me to create evidence that you were having an affair with Thomas Reed.
I refused.
He hired someone else.
That person is named Derek Shaw.
Shaw is not an investigator. He is a document forger.
Claire stopped reading.
Natalie whispered, "There it is."
Claire continued.
Shaw created text-message images, financial authorizations and a draft medical letter questioning your judgment.
The medical letter bears the name of Dr. Melissa Grant.
I have reason to believe Dr. Grant never wrote it.
Solomon has copies.
Charlotte has originals.
The most important evidence is on the flash drive.
It contains recorded meetings and video copied from the mirrored system in your house.
Do not confront Solomon alone.
He is more frightened than he appears.
Calvin Mercer
Claire stared at the last line.
"Video."
Ethan inserted the flash drive into a laptop.
Folders appeared.
They opened the first.
A timestamp.
Three weeks earlier.
The Bennett kitchen.
Solomon and Charlotte sat at the island.
The angle came from one of the cameras Solomon believed was disabled.
Charlotte said:
She'll never willingly give up Theo.
Solomon replied:
She won't have a choice.
Charlotte:
You need the emergency order first.
Solomon:
Calvin says judges hate sudden moves without evidence.
Charlotte:
Then create evidence.
Claire felt Natalie watching her.
The video continued.
Solomon poured wine.
"What if she fights the financial settlement?"
Charlotte smiled.
"Then remind her what a public custody trial does to a mother accused of instability."
Solomon laughed.
"She'd burn eleven million dollars before she'd risk Theo."
Charlotte raised her glass.
"Exactly."
Claire stopped the video.
Not because she could not handle more.
Because she finally understood.
The money was not the leverage.
Theo was.
They planned to use her love for her son as a weapon until she surrendered everything else.
Detective Alvarez said, "I need copies of all this."
"Take them."
Ethan opened another folder.
A video from eight days earlier.
Jennifer sat at the kitchen table with Solomon.
She looked uncomfortable.
Solomon said:
When Claire finds out about us, she'll explode. Don't worry about it.
Jennifer:
What if she doesn't?
Solomon:
She will.
Jennifer:
You sound like you want her to.
Solomon smiled.
"Because witnesses are useful."
Jennifer stared at him.
Claire felt sick.
Even the affair had become evidence.
Solomon was counting on Claire's reaction.
A screaming confrontation.
A broken object.
Maybe a shove.
Anything that could be described later as instability.
Instead, she had remained calm.
Her calmness had ruined the script.
Ethan clicked another file.
This one was recorded two nights earlier.
Calvin and Solomon were arguing in the garage.
Calvin:
I'm done.
Solomon:
You don't get to be done.
Calvin:
I kept copies.
Solomon's expression changed.
Solomon:
That would be a mistake.
Calvin:
No. Working for you was the mistake.
The video ended when Calvin walked out.
Detective Alvarez looked at Ethan.
"When did you last hear from him?"
"About twelve hours after that."
Claire's phone vibrated.
A text from Jennifer.
Please call me.
Claire almost ignored it.
Then another arrived.
Charlotte just came to my apartment.
Claire called.
Jennifer answered in a whisper.
"She's downstairs."
"Don't let her in."
"She says she knows I talked."
"Call police."
"I did."
Jennifer's breathing was fast.
"Claire, there's something I didn't tell you."
"What?"
"Solomon gave me a folder last week."
Claire looked at Natalie.
"What folder?"
"He said if anything happened, I should burn it."
"Do you still have it?"
"Yes."
"What is inside?"
Jennifer was silent.
May you like
Then:
"Your death certificate."
