Chapter 3 - the divorce Claire had never agreed to

Natalie Pierce arrived twenty-three minutes later.

By then, Claire had moved Theo into the study bathroom while she changed out of her cream suit and into trousers and a sweater.

She did not change because she was embarrassed.

She changed because the suit felt like something worn by the woman she had been that morning.

That woman no longer existed.

Natalie entered through the side door.

She was forty-one, sharp-eyed and incapable of being intimidated by people who mistook money for authority.

Charlotte tried to stop her.

"This is a private family matter."

Natalie held up a hand.

"I'm counsel for Claire Bennett. Move."

Charlotte moved.

Not because she wanted to.

Because Natalie had the tone of someone who documented resistance.

Claire met her in the study.

Theo sat on the sofa under a blanket.

Natalie crouched.

"Hey, Theo."

He knew her from holiday parties.

"Hi."

"You doing okay?"

He nodded.

Natalie did not ask him anything else.

She looked at Claire.

"Start from the beginning."

Claire explained.

The affair.

Charlotte grabbing Theo.

The security log.

The unknown man.

Jennifer's statement about a divorce.

Natalie listened without interrupting.

Then she asked one question.

"Does Solomon have access to your family trust documents?"

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Some."

"How much is in the trust?"

"Approximately eight point four million."

"Who is the beneficiary?"

"Me. Theo becomes a secondary beneficiary if I die."

Natalie's expression changed.

"Any separate trust for him?"

"Yes. My father created one. About three million now."

"Who controls it?"

"I do until Theo is twenty-five."

"Does Solomon become trustee if you're incapacitated?"

Claire stared at her.

"I don't know."

Natalie reached for her laptop.

"Find the documents."

Claire did.

Her father had established the trust six months before he died.

At the time, Claire had barely read the succession clauses.

She had trusted the attorney.

She had trusted her husband.

That second mistake mattered more.

Natalie scrolled.

Then stopped.

"There."

Claire leaned closer.

If Claire were legally incapacitated or removed as acting trustee by court order, control would pass temporarily to Theo's surviving legal parent.

Solomon.

Claire went cold.

"He wants the trust."

"Possibly."

"Three million dollars?"

Natalie shook her head.

"Control. Not ownership. But control can be abused."

Claire thought of Calvin's questions.

Do you yell?

Do you sleep?

Do you forget to pick up Theo?

A pattern formed.

Not a perfect one yet.

But enough.

Jennifer stood outside the study.

Natalie looked toward the door.

"You said she wants to talk?"

Claire opened it.

Jennifer had changed into her own clothes.

Charlotte stood behind her.

"Jennifer is leaving," Charlotte said.

Natalie replied, "Not before my client asks whether she wishes to make a voluntary statement."

Charlotte laughed once.

"You're not police."

"No. Which means she can talk without you interrupting."

Jennifer looked at Claire.

"I'll talk."

Charlotte's mouth tightened.

Solomon appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Jennifer, don't be stupid."

Jennifer flinched.

Claire noticed.

So did Natalie.

They moved into the dining room.

Natalie placed her phone on the table.

"Are you willing to be recorded?"

Jennifer nodded.

"Yes."

"State your name."

"Jennifer Cole."

"Did Solomon Bennett tell you he intended to divorce Claire Bennett?"

"Yes."

"When?"

"About four months ago."

Claire forced herself not to react.

"Did he say Claire knew?"

"Yes."

"What exactly did he say?"

Jennifer looked at Claire.

"He said you were basically separated but keeping up appearances for Theo."

Claire felt humiliation sting.

Not because she believed it.

Because she could imagine how easily Jennifer had.

Solomon was skilled at giving people the version of reality they most wanted.

Jennifer continued.

"He said you were controlling. That you had anger problems. That you'd threatened to ruin him financially if he left."

Claire's eyes met Natalie's.

The narrative.

Already established.

"Did you ever witness Claire behave violently?"

"No."

"Threaten Solomon?"

"No."

"Neglect Theo?"

"No."

"Did Solomon discuss custody?"

Jennifer hesitated.

"Yes."

Claire leaned forward.

"What did he say?"

"He said once the divorce started, you wouldn't be able to keep Theo."

"Why?"

"He said they had evidence."

"They?"

Jennifer glanced toward the doorway.

Charlotte stood there.

"They."

Charlotte stepped inside.

"This is absurd."

Natalie pointed toward the hall.

"Out."

Charlotte ignored her.

Jennifer suddenly looked angrier.

"You told me she was unstable too."

Charlotte stared at her.

"You chose to sleep with a married man. Do not pretend you're a victim."

Jennifer flinched as though slapped.

Claire watched both women.

Charlotte was making a mistake.

She was attacking Jennifer instead of controlling her.

Natalie saw it too.

"Jennifer," she said, "who is Calvin Mercer?"

Jennifer rubbed her hands together.

"I met him once."

"Where?"

"Solomon's office."

"Why?"

"Solomon said Calvin specialized in difficult divorces."

"What kind of specialist?"

"I don't know. Investigator maybe."

"Did you hear them discuss Claire?"

Jennifer nodded slowly.

"They talked about documenting behavior."

"What behavior?"

Jennifer looked sick.

"Solomon said they needed enough to make the court believe Theo wasn't safe with you."

Claire's hands turned cold.

Natalie said, "Did Solomon ever tell you why?"

Jennifer's gaze dropped.

"He said he needed full custody."

"Why?"

"He said you would use Theo to punish him."

Claire closed her eyes for one second.

Jennifer whispered, "I'm sorry."

Claire opened them.

"Did he ever mention Theo's trust?"

Jennifer went still.

Natalie noticed immediately.

"What?"

Jennifer's face changed.

"I didn't know it was Theo's."

Claire leaned forward.

"What did he say?"

"He said after the divorce he would finally have access to money that should have been his anyway."

Charlotte suddenly turned away.

It was a tiny movement.

But Claire saw it.

"How much?" Claire asked.

Jennifer whispered, "He said over eleven million."

Claire's mind raced.

Eight point four million in her trust.

Three million in Theo's.

Eleven point four.

Solomon had counted both.

Natalie's eyes hardened.

"Jennifer, did Solomon ever show you documents?"

"Some."

"What kind?"

"Petitions. Financial pages. Something about temporary custody."

Claire's pulse thudded.

"Where are they?"

"In his office."

Solomon appeared in the dining room doorway.

"No, they're not."

Jennifer looked at him.

He was fully dressed now.

Calm again.

Too calm.

He held a leather folder.

Claire recognized it.

Her father's trust folder.

Solomon raised it slightly.

"Looking for this?"

Natalie stood.

"Put it down."

Solomon smiled.

"I'm allowed to possess financial documents from my own marriage."

"Not documents belonging to a separate trust."

He looked at Claire.

"You're overreacting."

Claire stared at him.

"You planned to take Theo."

"No."

"You hired someone to question him."

"I hired someone to evaluate our situation."

"Without my knowledge."

"You've been unstable for months."

There it was.

Spoken aloud.

Natalie smiled faintly.

Not because it was funny.

Because Solomon had just made a mistake.

"Keep talking," she said.

Solomon's eyes moved to the phone recording on the table.

He stopped.

Then Theo appeared at the end of the hallway.

Claire stood immediately.

"Theo, sweetheart, stay in the study."

But he was looking at Solomon.

"Daddy?"

Solomon softened his expression instantly.

"Hey, buddy."

Theo hesitated.

Then asked the question that broke the room open.

"Are we still practicing what I say to the judge?"

Nobody moved.

Solomon went white.

May you like

Claire slowly turned toward him.

"What judge?"
