Chapter 9 - The Child Clara Chose
Clara spent the final months of her pregnancy rebuilding both the company and herself.
She returned as executive chairwoman but appointed an experienced chief executive to handle daily operations. She created an independent ethics committee and strengthened every financial control Richard had exploited.
Employees who had been silenced by Richard began coming forward.
A junior accountant revealed that Richard had threatened to fire him for questioning payments to Northstar. Clara promoted the accountant into the new compliance division.
She also recovered nearly all of the stolen funds.
At home, healing was slower.
Some mornings, Clara woke expecting to hear Richard in the kitchen. Other times, she remembered Sabrina sitting at her baby shower and felt anger so sharp that she had to stop what she was doing.
Naomi reminded her that grief did not mean she wanted Richard back.
She was mourning the person she had believed he was.
Clara gave birth to a healthy daughter on a bright morning in early autumn.
She named her Elizabeth Edward Whitmore, honoring both her mother and father.
When the nurse placed Elizabeth in Clara’s arms, the baby opened her eyes and wrapped her tiny fingers around Clara’s thumb.
Clara cried.
Not because Richard was absent.
Because Clara finally understood that her daughter would never need to earn protection from her own mother.
Richard sent flowers from detention.
Clara donated them to the hospital reception area.
He also sent a letter.
In it, he wrote that he had made mistakes but believed Clara would eventually forgive him for the sake of their child.
Clara read the letter once.
Then she placed it in the legal file.
Forgiveness, she decided, did not require reconciliation.
It did not require access.
It did not require another chance.
Sometimes forgiveness simply meant refusing to let another person’s cruelty control the rest of your life.

For the first time, the future did not frighten her.
