Chapter 10 - A Different Departure

One year after the confrontation at the airport, Clara returned to the same private runway.

The sky was clear this time.

There was no rain, no shouting, and no frightened man standing beside a black sedan.

The white jet waited near the terminal with its boarding stairs open.

Clara walked toward it carrying Elizabeth in her arms. Her daughter wore a small blue coat and watched the aircraft with wide, curious eyes.

Naomi followed with a suitcase.

Whitmore Aeronautics had recovered from the scandal. Its research subsidiary remained under company ownership and had recently developed a safety system expected to change emergency aviation.

Clara had established the Edward Whitmore Integrity Fund to protect employees who reported misconduct.

Richard had pleaded guilty after Sabrina’s testimony and the recovered messages made a trial nearly impossible to win. He received a prison sentence and was ordered to repay the company.

Sabrina moved away after completing her cooperation agreement. She sent Clara an apology, admitting that she had envied Clara’s life and convinced herself that taking it was justified.

Clara did not reply.

Some apologies arrived too late to become bridges. They could only serve as markers showing where trust had ended.

At the foot of the stairs, Naomi handed Clara a tablet.

“The final divorce order,” she said. “It’s official.”

Clara read the document.

Her marriage to Richard Hale was over.

There had been a time when those words would have broken her.

Now they felt like an unlocked door.

She signed the final acknowledgment and returned the tablet.

“Are you ready?” Naomi asked.

Clara looked toward the jet.

They were traveling to Vancouver, the same destination Clara had chosen on the morning Richard was arrested. This time, the journey was not an escape.

It was Elizabeth’s first vacation.

Clara kissed her daughter’s forehead and began climbing the stairs.

Halfway up, she paused and looked across the runway.

She remembered Richard’s face when his phone began vibrating. She remembered Sabrina kneeling in the rain. She remembered the leather briefcase in her hand and the fear she had hidden beneath her calm expression.

People later described Clara as fearless that morning.

They were wrong.

She had been terrified.

Courage had not removed the fear.

It had simply helped her take the next step while the fear followed behind.

Inside the aircraft, Clara settled Elizabeth beside the window. The little girl pressed her hand against the glass as the engines came to life.

Naomi sat across from them.

“Do you ever regret sending the evidence before confronting him?”

“No.”

“Not even for a second?”

Clara considered the question.

“I regret trusting him after he stopped deserving it. I regret ignoring the moments when his love felt like control. But I don’t regret protecting my daughter, my father’s company, or myself.”

The aircraft began moving.

Through the window, the runway stretched ahead beneath the morning sun.

A year earlier, Clara had boarded the plane believing she was leaving behind everything she had built.

Now she understood the truth.

The company was still hers.

Her child was safe.

Her name belonged to her.

Her future had never been inside Richard’s hands.

As the aircraft lifted into the sky, Elizabeth laughed at the clouds below them.

Clara smiled and held her daughter close.

She was no longer the woman waiting for her husband to choose between her and someone else.

She had chosen herself.

And that choice had saved them both.
