Chapter 1 - The Runway

Richard’s phone began vibrating before Clara placed her foot on the first step of the private jet.
One call became three. Three became seven.
The screen flashed with names that drained the color from his face: the chairman of the board, the company’s general counsel, two outside attorneys, and the director of internal investigations.
The wet runway reflected the white aircraft, the black sedan, and the cold gray sky above them. Rainwater gathered around Richard’s polished shoes as he stared at the notifications.
“What have you done?” he demanded.
Clara stood at the bottom of the boarding stairs, six months pregnant, one hand resting protectively over her stomach. Her champagne-colored suitcase waited beside her. In her other hand was a leather briefcase Richard had been trying to locate since dawn.
Her eyes were red from a night without sleep, but the woman looking back at him was no longer broken.
Behind Richard, Sabrina remained on her knees in her pale pink satin dress. Her hair clung to her wet cheeks as she gripped his sleeve.
“You promised to choose me and the baby!” she cried.
Clara’s expression did not change.
“You two said enough last night.”
Richard looked toward the briefcase.
For the first time since Clara had known him, he seemed genuinely afraid.
“Clara, don’t go,” he said, stepping toward her. “I can explain.”
“You already did.”
His phone vibrated again.
A message appeared from the chairman.
Emergency board vote completed. Your authority has been suspended. Company accounts are frozen. Investigators are waiting at headquarters.
Richard’s hand began to shake.
Sabrina released his sleeve and slowly rose. Her eyes moved from his phone to Clara’s briefcase.
“What did you send them?” she whispered.
Clara placed one foot on the first step.
“The evidence reached the board before you arrived.”
In the distance, two dark government vehicles turned onto the private runway.
Richard followed her gaze and froze.
The first vehicle stopped beside the black sedan. Two investigators stepped out, followed by a uniformed airport security officer.
“Richard Hale?” one investigator called.
Richard backed away.
“This is a misunderstanding.”
Clara climbed another step.
Richard looked up at her with desperation replacing his anger.
“You’re my wife.”
Clara stopped beneath the open aircraft door.
“I was your wife when you betrayed me. I was your wife when you stole from my company. I was your wife when you planned to take my child and declare me unfit.”
Sabrina stared at Richard.
“You said the custody papers were only a precaution.”
Clara turned toward the aircraft.
The wind lifted the edge of her white dress.
Behind her, an investigator informed Richard that he was being detained for questioning regarding fraud, conspiracy, and the attempted unlawful transfer of corporate assets.
Richard called Clara’s name again.

She did not turn around.
The aircraft door closed behind her, leaving Richard alone on the rain-soaked runway with the consequences he had believed would never reach him.
