Chapter 9 - Adrian’s Final Move
Three months after his arrest, Adrian was released temporarily under strict supervision while awaiting trial.
His attorneys claimed he had been a visionary executive forced into aggressive decisions by a collapsing marriage and an uncooperative board.
They portrayed Evelyn as vindictive.
Then Adrian filed for full custody of Sophie.
The petition shocked even his legal team.
He claimed Evelyn’s public behavior in the company lobby had emotionally harmed their daughter. He submitted the false medical reports describing Evelyn as paranoid and unstable.
His purpose was not to become Sophie’s primary parent.
He wanted leverage.
Through his attorney, he offered a deal.
He would withdraw the custody request if Evelyn refused to testify in the criminal trial.
Evelyn read the proposal in her lawyer’s office.
“He is using our daughter to silence me.”
Her attorney nodded.
“If the case goes to a hearing, those medical documents will be exposed as false. But custody proceedings can be difficult for children.”
“Will Sophie have to speak?”
“Possibly.”
Evelyn felt sick.
Adrian knew exactly where to apply pressure.
That evening, she received a call from an unknown number.
It was Martin Hale.
“I found something,” he said.
Martin had resigned and entered a cooperation agreement. While reviewing archived communications, he discovered recordings Adrian had secretly made in the mansion.
Adrian had recorded arguments with Evelyn, hoping to capture statements that would support his claims about her mental condition.
Instead, one recording captured a conversation between Adrian and his attorney.
On it, Adrian discussed using Sophie as pressure.
“I don’t need custody,” he said. “I need Evelyn frightened enough to stay quiet.”
The recording transformed the case.
At the emergency custody hearing, Adrian appeared confident until Evelyn’s attorney played his own voice through the courtroom speakers.
His expression collapsed.
The judge dismissed his petition and ordered that all future contact with Sophie be supervised until the criminal case concluded.
Outside the courtroom, Adrian approached Evelyn before security intervened.
“You turned my daughter against me.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “You used her as a weapon.”
“I built that company.”
“You stole from it.”
“I made you relevant.”
Evelyn looked at the man she had once loved.
Without the mansion, the tailored suits, and the authority of his title, he seemed smaller.
“You could have had a good life,” she said. “You had a family, success, and more money than anyone could reasonably need.”
“I deserved more.”
“That is what destroyed you.”
He leaned closer.
“You think you won?”
“This was never about winning.”
“Then what was it about?”
Evelyn looked through the courthouse doors, where Sophie waited with Margaret.
“Making sure you never get to do this again.”
At trial, the evidence was overwhelming.
The forged signatures were matched to software found on Adrian’s private computer. Financial records connected him to every shell company. Tessa testified about his instructions and threats. Martin explained how the board records had been altered.
Evelyn testified for nearly six hours.
Adrian watched her the entire time.
She did not look away.
The jury found him guilty of fraud, conspiracy, identity theft, obstruction, and theft involving employee benefit funds.
He received a lengthy federal prison sentence.
Several executives received lesser sentences.
Millions in hidden assets were recovered.
When the judge asked Adrian whether he wished to speak, he blamed the board, the market, Tessa, Martin, and Evelyn.
He blamed everyone except himself.
The judge listened patiently.
