Chapter 7 - Two Suitcases on the Marble Floor

Friday morning began with photographs of Adrian and Tessa appearing online.
The images showed them entering the Halston Hotel together.
Within an hour, financial news channels were reporting that Evelyn Ralston’s marriage was collapsing on the same day the Beckett and Ralston board planned to discuss her leadership.
Adrian had released the photographs himself.
He expected them to provoke her.
Evelyn decided to give him the performance he wanted.
She returned to the mansion, packed his clothes into two suitcases, and chose the burgundy gown she had once worn to receive a humanitarian award.
Then she collected Sophie from Margaret’s house.
“Are we going to Daddy’s office?” Sophie asked.
“Yes.”
“Are you angry?”
“I am,” Evelyn said. “But anger does not get to make our decisions.”
Sophie considered this.
“Can anger sit in the back seat?”
Evelyn smiled for the first time in days.
“Yes. That is exactly where it can sit.”
When they arrived at the company, Adrian was already waiting near the elevators. Tessa stood beside him, appearing frightened and obedient.
The board members watched from the mezzanine.
Cameras waited outside.
Everything had been staged to capture Evelyn losing control.
She rolled the suitcases across the lobby.
“Congratulations,” she told Tessa. “He’s all yours.”
The suitcase opened. Clothes scattered. Employees stared.
Adrian accused her of losing her mind.
Evelyn turned to leave.
That was when Tessa made a decision neither Adrian nor Evelyn expected.
She pulled the sealed envelope from her handbag.
Adrian had taken a copy from her apartment, not the originals.
Tessa had moved them days earlier and allowed him to believe his search had succeeded.
“You need to see what he made me hide,” she said.
The envelope contained the original transfer instructions, ownership records for the shell companies, forged authorization templates, and a handwritten list of board members Adrian had bribed or blackmailed.
It also contained a copy of an agreement Adrian had signed with a private equity firm.
Once Evelyn was removed, he planned to sell Beckett and Ralston, dismiss thousands of employees, and liquidate several pension divisions.
The investigators entered the lobby.
Adrian tried to run.
Security blocked him.
“You cannot detain me,” he shouted. “I am the chief executive officer.”
Evelyn handed the envelope to Special Agent Laura Bennett.
“Not anymore.”
Adrian looked toward Tessa.
“You think they’ll protect you? You’re part of this.”
“I know,” Tessa said. “That’s why I already accepted responsibility.”
The elevator opened again.
Members of the board emerged for the emergency meeting.
Adrian straightened his jacket, attempting to recover his authority.
“You still need a vote to remove me.”
Evelyn faced the directors.
“Then let’s vote.”
The boardroom filled within minutes.
Adrian sat at one end of the table with his attorney. Evelyn sat at the other with Daniel and Agent Bennett.
The evidence was displayed on the main screen.
One by one, Adrian’s allies stopped defending him.
Martin Hale confessed that Adrian had threatened to expose his gambling debts.
The company secretary admitted altering meeting records.
Two directors revealed they had received shares in hidden companies.
The vote was unanimous.
Adrian Beckett was removed as chief executive officer.
As federal agents placed him under arrest, he looked at Evelyn.
“You would have nothing without me.”
Evelyn glanced around the boardroom her grandfather had built.

“You mistook standing beside me for carrying me.”
Then she watched the agents take him away.
