Chapter 5 - The Trap Behind the Affair
Evelyn hired a private forensic accountant named Daniel Cho.
She chose him because he had never worked with Adrian, the board, or any Ralston family foundation.
They met in the reading room of an old private library where phones were prohibited.
Evelyn gave him copies of the reports she had legally accessed as chairwoman.
Daniel studied them for nearly an hour.
Finally, he removed his glasses.
“This is not one suspicious transfer.”
“How many?”
“At least thirty-seven.”
Evelyn felt the blood drain from her face.
“Over what period?”
“Eighteen months.”
“How much money?”
“I can confirm sixty-two million dollars. The real number may be higher.”
She gripped the edge of the table.
“Where did it go?”
“Shell companies. Property purchases. Offshore investment vehicles. Some funds were moved repeatedly to make the trail difficult to follow.”
“Who authorized them?”
“Mostly you.”
“I authorized none of them.”
“I believe you.”
Daniel turned his laptop toward her.
“These signatures were digitally reconstructed from older documents. Whoever created them had access to internal files and executive authentication codes.”
“Adrian.”
“Possibly. But he could not do this alone.”
“Martin?”
“Someone in finance. Someone in records. Maybe someone in legal.”
Evelyn thought about the company’s twelve thousand employees and the retirement accounts entrusted to them.
“Are client funds gone?”
“Not yet. Most transfers appear to be leveraged. Your husband may be using pension assets as collateral for private acquisitions.”
“What acquisitions?”
Daniel opened another file.
The companies receiving the money had quietly purchased shares in Beckett and Ralston Financial Group.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
“He’s buying our own company.”
“Through hidden entities.”
“How much does he control?”
“Enough to influence a board vote.”
The truth became clear.
Adrian was not simply stealing money.
He was using the stolen money to seize control.
Daniel pointed to a draft legal document recovered from a temporary server.
It was a petition requesting the temporary removal of Evelyn Ralston as chairwoman due to concerns about her judgment and emotional stability.
Attached were reports from a private physician Evelyn had never met.
The reports described memory loss, paranoia, impulsive behavior, and obsessive jealousy.
Adrian had planned every argument.
Every time he called her confused, jealous, or unstable, he was creating witnesses.
The affair was not merely a personal betrayal. It was part of the strategy.
If Evelyn publicly confronted him and Tessa, Adrian would present the confrontation as proof that she had lost control.
The board would remove her.
He would take the company.
And once he controlled the records, the stolen money might never be traced.
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“What do I do?”
“Do not confront him yet,” Daniel said. “We need direct evidence connecting Adrian to the shell companies.”
“What about the board?”
“We don’t know who is loyal to him.”
“My daughter is living in the same house.”
Daniel’s expression changed.
“Do you believe she is in danger?”
“Not physically. Adrian loves Sophie in his own way.”
“In his own way is not the same as safely.”
Evelyn knew he was right.
That evening, she took Sophie to stay with her older aunt, Margaret, claiming the mansion needed emergency repairs.
Adrian pretended not to care.
But Evelyn noticed him watching from the upstairs window as their car disappeared through the gates.
An hour later, Daniel called.
“Adrian just scheduled an emergency board meeting for Friday.”
“What is the subject?”
“Your removal.”
Evelyn looked at the empty driveway.
