Chapter 6 - The Clause

Evelyn dropped to her knees and pulled Lily into her arms.
“Are you hurt?”
“My hand,” Lily sobbed.
A red mark circled her wrist.
Evelyn kissed her forehead and examined her fingers. Nothing appeared broken, but Lily trembled uncontrollably.
Lenora remained beside the shattered egg.
“I barely touched her.”
“You threw her to the floor.”
“She fell.”
Everyone had seen it.
Still, no relative spoke.
Cassandra pointed toward Evelyn.
“Take that child and get out before she ruins dinner.”
Captain’s blue light began flashing.
A faint tone sounded.
Evelyn remembered the card.
Press the button beneath its left paw if Lily is threatened.
While hugging Lily, she slipped her hand beneath the rabbit’s paw and pressed.
The tone stopped.
For several seconds, nothing happened.
Lenora looked almost relieved.
Then every security camera in the dining room rotated toward her.
A red light appeared above the door.
An electronic voice announced, “Independent recording initiated. External archive connected.”
Cassandra ran toward the wall control panel.
The screen rejected her code.
“What did she do?”
Lenora kicked the stuffed rabbit across the floor.
Evelyn stood, holding Lily.
“You two pieces of trash don’t belong in this house,” Lenora hissed.
Those were the words Arthur’s system had apparently been waiting to hear.
A hidden panel opened beneath the empty chair.
Inside was a sealed envelope.
At the same moment, Evelyn’s phone vibrated.
A message appeared.
Take the envelope.
Do not allow Lenora to destroy it.
Evelyn moved toward the chair.
Lenora grabbed her shoulder.
Mr. Hale stepped between them.
“Enough.”
Lenora stared at him.
“You are dismissed.”
“I resigned six months ago.”
“You still attend every family meeting.”
“To observe.”
“Observe what?”
“The activation conditions.”
Cassandra stopped struggling with the security panel.
“You knew this would happen.”
“I knew Arthur had created safeguards.”
“And you said nothing?”
“I was legally prohibited.”
Lenora lunged toward the hidden compartment.
Mr. Hale blocked her.
Evelyn took the envelope.
The wax seal bore Arthur’s lighthouse.
Beneath it was written:
To Evelyn, when they finally show you who they are.
Lily’s crying softened.
“Is that from Grandpa too?”
“Yes.”
Evelyn placed her daughter carefully on a chair.
She reached into her handbag for tissues and found something that had not been there earlier.
A small brass key.
It was attached to a card.
For keeping your promise to protect Lily.
Evelyn looked toward the maid near the service door.
The young woman met her eyes, then looked away.
Mara had someone inside the house.
Evelyn held up the key.
Lenora stared.
“Where did you get that?”
“You heard Arthur’s recording. The second key belongs to the person who kept her promise.”
“You have kept no promises. You destroyed my family.”
“No,” Evelyn said. “Nathan’s death destroyed this family. Arthur’s death finished it.”
She inserted the brass key into a tiny lock on the envelope.
The first key from the shattered blue egg was still in Lenora’s hand.
Two locks were built into the seal.
Both keys were required.
Mr. Hale understood first.
“Arthur intended cooperation.”
“With her?” Lenora asked.
“With Lily’s guardian.”
Lenora closed her fist around the key.
“Then it will never open.”
The front doors unlocked with a loud click.
Two security officers entered.
Behind them came Mara Quinn, carrying a black case.
She wore the same gray suit as in Arthur’s photograph, though her hair was shorter now.
Lenora stepped back.
“You.”
Mara placed the case on the table.
“Good afternoon, Lenora.”
“You are banned from this property.”
“Arthur’s authorization was never revoked.”
“He is dead.”
“His trust is not.”
Mara looked at Lily.
Her expression softened when she saw the red mark.
“Did the system upload the recording?”
Captain answered with a tone.
Mara nodded.
“It did.”
Cassandra turned to the relatives.
“This was staged. Evelyn brought that device into our home to provoke us.”
Mara opened a folder.
“The system also recorded the dining room through Arthur’s independent cameras. They have operated continuously since noon.”
Lenora stared at the chandelier.
A small lens was hidden among the crystals.
Mara continued.
“Two separate recordings show Lenora grabbing Lily’s arm and pushing her to the floor. They also show Cassandra blocking the exit and demanding that Lily be removed.”
“We did not block the exit,” Cassandra said.
“You ordered the gates closed.”
“That was Lenora.”
Lenora turned to her.
Cassandra looked away.
The family alliance had begun to crack.
Mara placed the black case on the table.
“Under Arthur’s final declaration, the protection clause is now active.”
“What does that mean?” one relative asked.
“It means Lenora Ashford is immediately suspended as controller of the mansion, the family trust, and Ashford Maritime.”
Lenora laughed.
“No private document can remove me from my own company.”
“It can when forty-two percent of the voting shares were never transferred to you.”
Lenora’s laughter stopped.
May you like
Mara pointed toward Lily.
“They belong to her.”
