Chapter 13 - The Other Ashford Daughter

Mr. Hale sat on the lighthouse floor as if his legs could no longer support him.
“My name was Michael Mercer,” he said. “I changed it after Laura died.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You knew Arthur had another daughter.”
“I knew Laura believed she did.”
“Did you help search for her?”
“For years.”
“Did you find her?”
He looked toward Mara.
Mara’s face remained still.
Evelyn understood before either of them spoke.
“Mara.”
Mara lowered the weapon.
Mr. Hale nodded.
“We believe Mara is Laura’s daughter.”
The ocean crashed against the rocks below.
Mara turned away.
“You promised not to tell her.”
“She deserves the truth.”
“Which truth?” Mara asked. “The one where Arthur abandoned my mother? The one where Lenora stole me? Or the one where you used me to infiltrate this family?”
Mr. Hale flinched.
“I never used you.”
“You found me when I was twenty-seven. You told me my birth records were false. Then you introduced me to Arthur as an attorney.”
“He wanted to know you.”
“He wanted to study me before admitting who he was.”
Evelyn thought of the photograph showing Mara beside Arthur and Lily.
“Did Arthur confirm you were his daughter?”
“A DNA test did.”
“Then you are Lenora’s stepdaughter.”
Mara gave a humorless laugh.
“To Lenora, I am proof of humiliation.”
“Does she know?”
“She suspected. Arthur never admitted it to her.”
Mr. Hale moved closer to the safe.
“Laura believed her daughter had been placed with a family connected to Ashford Maritime. That family raised Mara under another name.”
“What does this have to do with Nathan?” Evelyn asked.
“Everything,” Mara replied. “Nathan found my sealed adoption payment while tracing Northglass.”
“He knew who you were?”
“He learned two weeks before he died.”
“Why didn’t he tell me?”
“He was trying to protect Arthur.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Everyone keeps using that word while lying to me.”
Mara accepted the accusation.
“Nathan contacted me under the name Rose Vale. He planned to move the evidence into a trust for Lily.”
“So Rose Vale was both Lily’s identity and your meeting code.”
“Yes.”
“Were you with him the night before the crash?”
“No.”
“Did you speak to him?”
“Yes.”
Mara removed an old phone from her bag and opened an archived audio file.
Nathan’s voice played.
“If anything happens to me, don’t trust the family lawyer.”
Mr. Hale looked stricken.
Nathan continued.
“Someone accessed my records using Hale’s authorization. I don’t know whether he did it himself.”
The audio ended.
Evelyn looked at Mr. Hale.
“Did you?”
“No.”
“Could someone use your authorization?”
“My assistant.”
“Who was your assistant?”
Mr. Hale hesitated.
“Lenora.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Before marrying Arthur, Lenora worked in my father’s legal office. She knew our document systems. Years later, Arthur asked me to give her limited access for estate planning.”
Mara’s expression hardened.
“You never told me that.”
“I discovered it only after Nathan’s death.”
“Why keep it secret?”
“Because Lenora threatened to expose Laura’s affair publicly and destroy Mara’s career.”
Mara stepped toward him.
“You allowed her to control you.”
“Yes.”
The answer was immediate.
“I was a coward.”
Evelyn thought of Arthur’s confession.
The Ashford family had not been destroyed by one cruel person. It had been protected by many frightened ones.
A noise came from the cassette player.
The tape had continued turning.
Laura’s voice returned.
“There is one more thing Arthur does not know.”
All three of them looked toward the machine.
“The daughter taken from me was not the only baby born at Vale Clinic that night.”
A second bracelet slid from behind the tape compartment.
Mr. Hale picked it up.
Baby Boy Vale.
The same date.
Mara stared at it.
“I had a twin?”
Laura continued.
“The clinic told me only one child survived. I later found two adoption payments.”
Evelyn’s phone rang.
It was the police officer guarding Lily’s hotel room.
She answered immediately.
“Mrs. Hart, your daughter is safe, but someone attempted to enter the floor using Ashford family credentials.”
“Who?”
“We detained a man carrying identification under the name Malcolm Vane.”
Mr. Hale stood.
“The missing security director.”
The officer continued.
“He says he did not come to harm Lily. He says he came to protect his daughter.”
Evelyn’s mouth went dry.
“Whose daughter?”
May you like
There was a pause.
“He claims Lily is his granddaughter.”
