Chapter 14 - Malcolm Vane’s Confession

Malcolm Vane was sixty-two years old, thin, and visibly ill.
The police brought him to a secure interview room near the hotel.
He had disappeared after Nathan’s funeral and lived under false identities for five years.
Evelyn sat across from him with Mara and two detectives.
“Explain what you meant,” Evelyn said.
Malcolm looked through the observation glass toward Lily, who was playing with Mrs. Bell in the adjoining room.
“I did not mean biologically.”
“Then choose your words carefully.”
“Nathan called me his second father.”
Evelyn remembered Nathan mentioning a security director who taught him to drive and took him fishing when Arthur was traveling.
“You were close.”
“Until he discovered what I had done.”
“What did you do?”
Malcolm folded his hands.
“I erased the garage footage.”
Mara leaned forward.
“Why?”
“Lenora ordered me to.”
“Because Cassandra tampered with Nathan’s car?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because the person in the maintenance uniform was me.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You touched Nathan’s car.”
“I installed a tracking device.”
“Why?”
“Arthur asked me to follow Nathan.”
“Arthur?”
“He believed Nathan was meeting smugglers connected to the northern ports.”
“Nathan was investigating them.”
“I learned that later.”
“Did you damage the brakes?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“I don’t know.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
“I inspected the car after the crash. The brake line had been cut with a precision tool.”
“Could Cassandra have done it?”
“No. She wouldn’t know how.”
“Lenora?”
“No.”
“Arthur?”
Malcolm looked down.
“I don’t know.”
Mara placed the photo of the signet ring on the table.
“Who entered the garage office?”
“I never saw their face.”
“You controlled the cameras.”
“The office camera was private. Nathan installed it himself.”
“Who wore Arthur’s ring?”
“Several replicas existed.”
Evelyn frowned.
“Why?”
“Arthur gave copies to the Lighthouse Circle.”
“What is that?”
Malcolm looked at Mara.
“You truly don’t know?”
“No.”
“It was a private group created by Arthur and Laura Mercer. They investigated corruption inside the company.”
“How many members?”
“Five.”
“Names?”
“Arthur. Laura. Me. Michael Hale.”
He nodded toward Mara.
“And Mara’s adoptive father, Dr. Julian Quinn.”
Mara went still.
“My father was a physician.”
“He was also the doctor at Vale Clinic.”
The room fell silent.
“Did he arrange my adoption?” Mara asked.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To keep you alive.”
“From whom?”
“Lenora discovered Laura’s pregnancy. But Lenora was not the greatest danger. Arthur’s business partners believed Laura had copied financial records. They threatened both children.”
“Both,” Evelyn said. “Mara and her twin.”
Malcolm nodded.
“Julian separated them.”
“Who adopted the boy?” Mara asked.
“I was never told.”
“Laura’s tape says there were two adoption payments.”
“One for each placement.”
“Did Arthur know?”
“Not until the final year of his life.”
Evelyn leaned closer.
“Did Nathan know?”
“Yes.”
“Who was the boy?”
Malcolm looked toward the observation glass.
“I believe Nathan found him.”
“Name him.”
“I don’t know his legal name.”
“That isn’t enough.”
“He used the initials L.M.”
The initials appeared in Arthur’s poisoning log.
“L.M. visited Arthur,” Mara said.
“Yes.”
“Was he poisoning him?”
Malcolm’s eyes filled with fear.
“Arthur believed so.”
“Then why didn’t Arthur stop seeing him?”
“Because L.M. claimed to be his son.”
Mara stood abruptly.
“My twin.”
Malcolm nodded.
“He had proof from Vale Clinic. Arthur welcomed him privately. Weeks later, Arthur became ill.”
“Where is L.M. now?”
“He disappeared after Arthur died.”
Evelyn thought of the note slid beneath the library door.
The lighthouse safe is empty.
We took Lily’s file years ago.
“Why would he want Lily’s file?”
“Because Nathan placed evidence inside her trust.”
“What evidence?”
“Proof that the weapons network did not begin with Cassandra or Lenora.”
“Who began it?”
Malcolm’s voice dropped.
“Arthur.”
Mara stared at him.
“You’re lying.”
“Arthur created the original secret routes during a foreign conflict thirty years ago. He claimed he was helping refugees. Later, his partners used those routes for weapons and money.”
“Did Laura discover that?”
“Yes.”
“Is that why she died?”
Malcolm nodded slowly.
“Her car exploded before she could testify.”
Mr. Hale had always said Laura died in an accident.
Another accident.
Another vehicle.
Another silenced witness.
Evelyn pressed her palms against the table.
“Why did you come to Lily?”
“Because L.M. contacted me last night.”
“What did he say?”
Malcolm reached into his coat.
A detective stopped him and removed a photograph.
It showed Lily leaving school two weeks earlier.
On the back was a handwritten message.
EASTER OPENS THE HOUSE.
THE CHILD OPENS THE FINAL DOOR.
Evelyn looked through the glass at Lily.
“What final door?”
May you like
Malcolm’s answer was almost a whisper.
“The one beneath Ashford House.”
