Chapter 15 - the man who was supposed to be dead

Hannah stared at the photograph.
The room seemed to disappear around her.
The man in the photograph was smiling.
Richard stood beside him.
Vivian was on the other side.
Samuel was behind them.
And in the corner was a younger Caleb.
Hannah looked at Caleb.
“You knew?”
“I found the photograph after Grandpa died.”
“Who is he?”
Caleb swallowed.
“His name is Thomas Pierce.”
Hannah shook her head.
“Pierce?”
“My grandfather's brother.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
Hannah looked at him.
“You knew.”
Samuel nodded.
“Yes.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because Richard made me promise.”
“Why?”
Samuel looked toward Vivian.
She had become completely silent.
Hannah turned to her.
“Where is Thomas?”
Vivian's eyes filled with fear.
“I don't know.”
“You're lying.”
“I haven't seen him in years.”
Caleb stepped forward.
“He called Mom last week.”
Vivian turned sharply.
“Caleb!”
Hannah's heart stopped.
“Last week?”
Caleb nodded.
“He said the estate was finally going to belong to him.”
Samuel immediately reached for his phone.
Then stopped.
A notification appeared on his screen.
He read it.
His face went pale.
“What is it?” Hannah asked.
Samuel looked at the others.
“The court has received a new filing.”
“From whom?”
Samuel slowly turned the phone toward Hannah.
The filing had been submitted under the name Thomas Pierce.
Hannah stared.
The man everyone believed was dead had just claimed ownership of the estate.
But beneath the filing was something even more disturbing.
A second signature.
Vivian's.
Hannah looked at her stepmother.
“You signed this.”
Vivian's eyes filled with tears.
“I had no choice.”
“Why?”
Vivian whispered:
“Because he has your mother.”
Hannah froze.
Her mother.
Alive.
And now missing.
Samuel's phone rang.
He answered.
He listened for several seconds.
Then his expression changed.
Hannah watched him carefully.
“What happened?”
Samuel lowered the phone.
“He wants you to come to the lake house.”
“Who?”
Samuel looked directly at Hannah.
“Thomas.”
Hannah stared at the winter darkness beyond the windows.
For years, she had believed the worst secret in her family was buried with her father.
She had been wrong.
The secret was alive.
And it had just called her by name.
Outside, headlights appeared at the end of the estate driveway.
One vehicle.
Then another.
Then a third.
Hannah stepped toward the window.
None of the vehicles belonged to the family.
Caleb whispered:
“Who are they?”
Hannah did not answer.
The front doorbell rang.
Once.
Twice.
Then three times.
Samuel moved toward the door.
Vivian grabbed his arm.
“Don't.”
Samuel looked at her.
“Why?”
Vivian's voice trembled.
“Because Thomas never comes alone.”
The doorbell rang again.
Hannah looked at the certified envelope still lying on the table.
Then at the photograph.
Then at Vivian.
For the first time, she realized the eviction had never been the real battle.
The house was only the beginning.
And somewhere beyond the frozen lake, a man who had supposedly been dead for five years was waiting with the one person Hannah had spent half her life believing she had lost forever.
Her mother.
The door opened.
And Hannah heard a familiar voice from the darkness.
“Hannah.”
She stopped breathing.
May you like
The voice was not Thomas.
It was her father's.
