Chapter 10 - Samuel's secret
Hannah returned to Connecticut with more questions than answers.
She confronted Samuel.
“You knew my mother was alive.”
“Yes.”
“You helped hide her.”
“Yes.”
“Did my father know?”
“Yes.”
“Then why didn't he tell me?”
Samuel removed his glasses.
“Because the person your father feared had access to everything.”
“Vivian?”
Samuel shook his head.
“No.”
Hannah waited.
“Then who?”
Samuel looked at the door.
“I cannot say.”
“Why?”
“Because I don't know who is still working for her.”
Hannah stared.
“Still?”
Samuel sighed.
“Your father believed Vivian was part of a larger scheme.”
“What scheme?”
“Financial manipulation.”
“Of the estate?”
“Not just the estate.”
Samuel opened a drawer.
He removed an old ledger.
“Richard discovered that money had been moved through shell companies for years.”
“Vivian?”
“Possibly.”
“Caleb?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Samuel looked at Hannah.
“Your father's closest business partner.”
Hannah remembered the name.
Martin Hale.
Richard's oldest friend.
Dead for five years.
Samuel continued.
“Martin wasn't the mastermind.”
“Then who was?”
Samuel did not answer.
Instead, he handed Hannah a key.
“Your father left this with me.”
