Chapter 7 - Patricia's Second Family

Version Six called himself Vale, the surname assigned to him during a containment phase. Patricia had later adopted the same surname as part of her cover. That coincidence was not coincidence at all.
"She raised me between deployments," Vale said. "Not as a son. As a rehearsal. She taught me your childhood, your gestures, your loyalties. When I failed a memory test, she made me repeat the scene until my body reacted correctly."
Harrison listened without lowering the gun. "Why should we trust you?"
"You should not. But Claire should recognize this."
Vale placed a brass key on the table. Claire inhaled sharply. It belonged to an antique music box David had given Lily when she was four.
Mercer ordered a team to search Patricia's known properties. The first two were empty. The third, a townhouse registered to a cultural foundation, contained a hidden basement lined with photographs of Harrison at every age. Some were genuine family images. Others showed men with his face training, sleeping, eating, and undergoing surgery.
They went there before dawn.
Harrison entered with Mercer while Claire remained at the safe facility with Lily and Vale. The townhouse smelled faintly of lavender, Patricia's preferred perfume. In the basement, seven rooms were arranged like stages from Harrison's life: his childhood bedroom, a military dormitory, a desert command tent, the kitchen from his first apartment, even a copy of the bedroom he had shared with Claire.
On the wall beside each stage, handwritten notes evaluated performance.
V2: insufficient humor response.
V4: attachment to Rourke exceeds projection.
V6: jealousy unstable, domestic integration high.
V7: strongest command adaptation, resistant to emotional correction.
Harrison realized he was Version Seven.
The knowledge arrived not as revelation but as recognition. Some part of him had always known his memories contained seams. He remembered his mother's last words in two different rooms. He remembered Claire wearing red and blue on the day they met. He remembered a mission partner dying before and after sunrise.
At the far end of the basement, Mercer found a wall map marked with black pins. Each pin represented a continuity subject: judges, generals, intelligence directors, scientists, cabinet officials. More than forty names.
Several were current national leaders.
A television switched on behind them.
Patricia appeared seated in an unknown room. Her calm had returned.
"Harrison," she said, "by now you have discovered your number. I know you will experience anger, but anger is simply continuity rejecting authorship. You are not less real because we made you. You are more valuable because we improved you."
"Where are you?" Harrison asked the screen.
"Preparing the transfer Rourke was too frightened to finish."
"You sent me to Claire's door."
"I sent you to the only place where adjudication could expose the ledger. Rourke planned to erase you quietly. I needed both active Harrisons visible."
Mercer stepped closer. "Why?"
Patricia smiled. "Because Black Crown cannot begin until the system chooses a final Vance."
The screen split. On the second feed, General Rourke stood beside the duplicate from the tower. The duplicate wore Harrison's uniform and addressed a group of senior officers.
"That broadcast is live inside strategic command," Mercer said.
Patricia nodded. "In eleven minutes, he will be recognized as the surviving Harrison Vance. The man beside you will become an armed impostor responsible for the Aurelian attack. Every camera, financial record, medical file, and witness statement will confirm it."
Harrison looked around at the rooms that had built him. "Then why show me?"
"Because you still have one function left. Kill Claire. Destroy her copied wafer. The system will restore your identity and allow you to take the duplicate's place."
Mercer raised her weapon toward the television as if a bullet could stop the message.
Patricia leaned closer to the camera. "You have always chosen command over love. That is the trait no version could remove."
The feed ended.
An alarm sounded from Mercer's radio. National security bulletins were spreading Harrison's image. He was listed as a terrorist suspect. Claire was named as his accomplice. Agent Mercer had been suspended and ordered to surrender.
Then Lily called through the secure line.
Her voice trembled. "Mom is gone."
Harrison gripped the radio. "What happened?"
"Vale said there was a hidden exit. They left together."
"Did Claire go willingly?"
May you like
Lily hesitated.
"She left a message for you," the girl said. "She said, 'Do not follow me unless you are ready to learn what you did before you became Seven.'"
