Chapter 12 - Claire's Signature

Harrison watched the footage while gunfire and alarms became distant noise.

Claire stood in a laboratory fourteen years earlier, younger but unmistakable. Patricia placed a document before her. On the other side of the glass, Version Seven lay inside a medical cradle.

"The previous continuation is compromised," Patricia said in the recording. "Without a stable replacement, Rourke will place the original program under military control. Help us activate Seven, and you retain access long enough to expose the system."

Claire signed.

The video continued. She entered the cradle room and touched Harrison's face before he opened his eyes.

"I am sorry," she whispered.

The present Harrison removed his hand from the scanner.

"You made me."

Claire did not deny it. "I authorized your awakening. I did not create the program, but I chose you over the version Rourke planned to deploy."

"Why?"

"Because your profile showed the strongest capacity to refuse an unlawful command."

He laughed once, without humor. "You selected a better weapon."

"I selected a man I believed could become more than his instructions. Then I married you because the cover required proximity, and because somewhere inside that lie I loved you. Both things are true."

Patricia used the distraction to reach the ledger chamber. Twelve tackled her. They crashed against the damaged glass as the Custodian fought the remaining guards.

The countdown reached six minutes.

Rourke shouted that the Prime review had already begun. If Harrison withdrew, the system would default to Patricia's template because she held the active continuity key.

Harrison placed his hand back on the scanner.

The identity review compared his blood, neural responses, memory structure, scar tissue, and behavioral profile against records spanning three decades. Contradictions filled the screen.

BIRTH GENOME: 92.4 percent match.

BALKAN TRAUMA: absent.

MEMORY LINEAGE: composite.

CONTINUITY STATUS: Version Seven.

PRIME CLAIM: denied.

A sharp pain struck behind Harrison's ear. His vision blurred. The system began erasing his authentication pathways, starting with every institution that recognized his identity. Bank accounts vanished. Medical records closed. Military service changed to a deceased placeholder.

Then Lily stepped beside him and placed her hand on the secondary plate.

"Inheritance bridge detected," the system announced.

Claire tried to pull her away. Lily held firm.

"He may not be the first," Lily said, "but he is the Harrison who came for me."

The system opened a new category.

RELATIONAL CONTINUITY.

It requested testimony.

Claire spoke first. She described fourteen years of marriage, conflict, tenderness, fear, and failure. Mercer testified that Harrison had surrendered when his team could have fought. Vale testified that Seven had rejected Patricia's kill command. Twelve testified that identity without choice was only ownership. Even the Custodian spoke, saying the man at the scanner had inherited a stolen life but had made decisions the original never made.

Rourke refused.

The countdown reached three minutes.

The system issued a provisional ruling.

PRIME AUTHORITY CANNOT BE ESTABLISHED.

CONTINUITY AUTHORITY MAY BE ELECTED BY VERIFIED RELATIONAL NETWORK.

Claire realized what Meridian had become. The original architecture was designed to rebuild trust through distributed witnesses when official records failed. Reassignment had corrupted it, but the ethical core remained.

"Everyone in the House can vote," she said. "Not for who is original. For who they recognize as accountable."

The Custodian activated the resident network. Faces appeared across the archive screens. Continuations, spouses, children, and survivors submitted recognition signatures.

Patricia broke free from Twelve and seized Lily.

"You think love makes identity?" she shouted. "Love is the easiest memory to manufacture."

She pressed a blade to Lily's throat.

Harrison stepped away from the scanner.

"Take me," he said.

"I already did," Patricia answered.

Claire moved subtly toward the damaged chamber. Harrison saw her hand reach for the cooling control.

He spoke to Patricia, keeping her attention. "You wanted a final Vance. Here I am."

"No. You are contaminated by choice."

Claire ruptured the coolant line.

A cloud of freezing vapor swallowed the room. Lily dropped beneath Patricia's arm. Twelve pulled her clear. Harrison tackled Patricia while Mercer secured Rourke.

The ledger temperature rose.

One minute remained.

The recognition vote completed.

CONTINUITY AUTHORITY ELECTED: HARRISON VANCE, VERSION SEVEN.

Three options appeared before him.

DISCLOSE.

PURGE.

TRANSFER.

A fourth option flickered beneath them, hidden in Claire's original code.

SEVER.

May you like

Harrison selected it.

The House went dark.
