Chapter 15 - The Woman Who Remembered Every Son

Patricia's aircraft circled the island while the underground facility sealed itself. On the theater screen, a live feed appeared from an unknown medical room.

An elderly woman lay in bed beneath a white blanket. Her hair was silver, her face thin, but Harrison recognized the shape of her hands.

Evelyn Vance opened her eyes.

"Harry," she whispered.

Every man carrying Harrison's life reacted.

The Custodian stepped toward the screen.

Harrison felt his knees weaken.

Vale, watching through Mercer's body camera from the surface corridor, said the word mother aloud. Thomas covered his mouth. Lily gripped Claire's hand.

Patricia entered the broadcast. "Evelyn has been in protected medical suspension for nine years. Her brain contains the original emotional map used to stabilize every Vance continuation. Destroy the ledger, and the support system keeping her alive will terminate."

Claire examined the facility controls. "That could be a lie."

"It is partly true," the Custodian said. "I placed her in suspension after neurological failure. The ledger maintains portions of her memory architecture."

Harrison turned on him. "You used your own mother as a server."

The older man accepted the accusation. "I told myself I was preserving her."

On the screen, Evelyn struggled to focus. "Which one are you?"

Harrison approached the camera. "Version Seven."

She smiled weakly. "You were the stubborn one."

The words pierced him. "Do you remember me?"

"I remember all of you. That was the punishment. Patricia made me watch each awakening, each correction, each death. I called every one of you Harry because none of you deserved to wake without a mother."

The Custodian looked away.

Patricia offered terms. Surrender the ledger and Lily, and Evelyn would be transferred to medical care. Refuse, and the incoming force would destroy the island.

Mercer reported that two aircraft were broadcasting legitimate warrants signed by officials implicated in Meridian. Their authority might be manufactured or real. After Sever, the distinction had become nearly impossible to verify quickly.

The destruction console displayed three waiting signatures.

ORIGINAL.

CONTINUATION.

INHERITANCE.

Lily stepped toward her scanner. "Grandma Evelyn wants this ended."

"You do not know that," Harrison said.

Evelyn heard him through the channel. "Yes, she does."

Patricia cut the medical feed.

The facility shook as the first aircraft landed above. Explosions struck the outer doors. Mercer and her agents took defensive positions. Vale and Thomas moved to the hangar, prepared to delay the assault.

Claire discovered a hidden fifth pathway in the ledger, one not present at Fort Brannon. It was labeled RECONCILIATION.

"What does it do?" Harrison asked.

"It merges disputed identity records without selecting an owner. Every Harrison profile would become legally recognized as a separate person with shared historical claims. It could free all continuations from replacement status."

"Then choose it."

"The process requires the original emotional map. Evelyn's mind would be copied into the network. She might survive, but everyone connected to Meridian could inherit fragments of her memories."

The Custodian stared at the option. "Patricia wants that. Evelyn's map contains the maternal stabilization pattern. With it, Patricia could make any implanted identity feel unquestionably loved and therefore unquestionably real."

The assault reached the lower corridor.

Gunfire echoed closer.

Harrison faced the impossible choices. Destroy the ledger and possibly kill Evelyn. Reconcile the records and give Patricia the final tool she needed. Preserve the system and continue the cycle.

Lily looked at the ocean image frozen on the theater wall. "There is another memory in me."

She closed her eyes and described Evelyn on the black-sand beach placing a small metal object beneath a stone shaped like a sleeping bird. The Custodian went still.

"That beach was on this island," he said.

Claire understood first. "Evelyn hid an offline key before her suspension. A key outside Meridian."

The destruction console began a sixty-second lockout as Patricia breached the final security ring.

Harrison, Claire, Lily, and the Custodian ran toward the surface tunnel. Mercer covered them. Vale's voice came through the radio, reporting that Thomas had been hit but was alive. Snow and rotor wind exploded through the hangar as the outer doors opened.

Across the frozen runway, Patricia emerged from an armored transport surrounded by operators.

Behind her, two medics wheeled a sealed life-support capsule.

Evelyn lay inside.

Her eyes opened as Harrison approached.

Patricia raised a remote trigger. "One more step and every memory in her brain burns."

The Custodian stopped beside Harrison. For the first time, the two men stood together before the woman whose love had been used to build them.

Evelyn lifted one trembling hand inside the capsule and pointed past Patricia toward the cliffs.

Toward the black-sand shore.

Then Harrison saw someone standing above the beach beside the stone shaped like a sleeping bird.

A man in a dark coat.

Same height. Same face.

No scars.

He held the offline key in one hand and a pistol in the other.

The Custodian whispered, "That cannot be him."

Harrison did not look away. "Who?"

The man on the cliff smiled and raised the key.

Evelyn's heart monitor accelerated.

"Version One," she said.

The runway lights went black.

A single gunshot crossed the island.

And no one knew which Harrison had fallen.
