Chapter 1 - The Apartment With Golden Walls

Six years earlier, Emily Carter inherited the apartment from her grandmother, Rose.
It occupied the top floor of a historic building, with cream walls, carved doors, and a crystal chandelier above the dining table. Rose had bought it after building a catering company from nothing. During childhood summers, she taught Emily how to fold napkins, balance accounts, and recognize the difference between generosity and surrender.
“A home should make you feel larger,” Rose once told her. “Not smaller.”
After Rose died, Emily preserved the apartment for a year before slowly making it her own. She turned a bedroom into an office, repainted the kitchen, and hosted dinners for friends.
Emily was a successful brand strategist when she met Daniel Mercer at a charity fundraiser. Daniel was charming and ambitious. He spoke of opening a consulting firm and admired Emily’s independence.
When they became engaged, he agreed to a prenuptial agreement.
“It’s just paper,” he said. “I’m marrying you, not your apartment.”
For the first year, their marriage seemed peaceful. Daniel cooked on Sundays and kissed Emily beneath the chandelier.
Then his consulting firm failed.
He began returning from meetings angry. He criticized the apartment, the building fees, and Emily’s long hours. Small complaints became judgments.
Emily told herself he was ashamed and needed patience.
