Chapter 7 - what Emma finally said when Vanessa was not in the room)

Officer Melissa Grant had responded to hundreds of domestic calls.

She knew anger.

She knew manipulation.

She knew frightened children.

More importantly, she knew that children often gave different answers depending on who stood beside them.

She separated everyone.

Vanessa remained in the living room with Officer Perez.

Daniel sat on the back porch.

Emma was taken into the kitchen with Officer Grant and Evelyn, whom Emma knew well enough to feel safe around.

Daniel hated being separated from her.

But he understood why.

Grant crouched beside Emma.

"Your dad told me you had a hard night."

Emma squeezed Bunny.

"Do you know where you slept?"

Emma nodded.

"Can you show me?"

Emma pointed outside.

Grant walked with her toward the doghouse.

Emma stopped six feet away.

Her breathing changed.

Grant noticed.

"You don't have to go closer."

Emma nodded.

"Did you sleep in there?"

"Yes."

"One time?"

Emma looked at her fingers.

"Two."

"Did you want to?"

"No."

"Who put you there?"

Emma whispered, "Vanessa."

"Did Vanessa tell you why?"

"I got out of bed."

"Why did you get out of bed?"

"Potty."

Grant took notes.

"What happened the other night?"

Emma rubbed Bunny's ear.

"I called Daddy."

"And then?"

"She got mad."

"Did she hurt you?"

Emma thought.

"She makes me clean."

"Cleaning isn't always hurting. What kind of cleaning?"

"Dishes."

"Anything else?"

"Floor. Bathroom. Her shoes."

Evelyn looked away.

Grant remained calm.

"Did you eat every day?"

Emma nodded.

Then hesitated.

"Sometimes."

Grant's eyes sharpened.

"What does sometimes mean?"

"If I'm good."

"Who decides if you're good?"

Emma looked toward the living room.

"Vanessa."

"Did Vanessa ever tell you not to tell your dad things?"

Emma nodded.

"What did she say?"

Emma's voice became so quiet Grant had to lean closer.

"She said police take me away."

Evelyn covered her mouth.

Grant sat back.

"Emma, listen to me. You are not in trouble."

Emma stared at her.

"Your dad is not in trouble because you told the truth."

Emma's eyes filled with tears.

"And nobody is taking you away because you asked for help."

The first tear slid down her cheek.

"Promise?"

Grant could not make every promise a child wanted.

But she could make this one carefully.

"We are going to make sure you stay somewhere safe."

Emma looked toward the porch.

"With Daddy?"

Grant looked through the glass at Daniel.

"That's what we're working on."

In the living room, Vanessa told a very different story.

Emma had severe behavioral issues.

Emma had voluntarily climbed into the doghouse during play.

Emma exaggerated constantly.

Evelyn was intrusive.

Daniel was unstable from work stress.

The chores were age-appropriate.

The sink incident lasted "maybe thirty seconds."

When Officer Perez asked why the backyard camera had been disconnected, Vanessa said she did not know.

Daniel showed him the account log.

Manual administrator disconnect.

Vanessa changed her explanation.

"The camera annoyed me."

"Why?"

"Notifications."

"The kitchen camera too?"

"Same reason."

Perez wrote that down.

Then Evelyn showed police her recording.

Vanessa heard her own voice.

If you wake another neighbor, you stay out here tomorrow night too.

She stopped talking.

Grant requested a child welfare investigator.

Photographs were taken of the doghouse.

The blanket.

The cup.

Emma's sock.

Her hands.

The sink.

The chair.

The disabled cameras.

Daniel provided phone logs showing Emma's interrupted call.

The preschool was contacted.

Ms. Brooks provided copies of the messages she had sent.

Messages Daniel had never received.

Daniel checked his email trash.

Empty.

But the school server still had delivery logs.

The emails had reached his account.

Someone had deleted them.

Police asked Daniel who had access.

"Vanessa."

Vanessa called from the living room.

"So did he."

Officer Perez looked at her.

"He was in Baltimore."

Vanessa stopped talking again.

At 7:18 p.m., the child welfare investigator arrived.

At 8:02, Vanessa was told she could not remain in the home that night.

She laughed.

"This is my house too."

Daniel said nothing.

The investigator explained that a temporary emergency safety plan required separation from Emma while allegations were investigated.

Vanessa pointed at Daniel.

"He hit me."

Daniel nodded.

"I already admitted it."

"You locked me in that thing."

"For less than a minute."

"That's kidnapping."

Officer Grant interrupted.

"Ms. Carter, you can make a statement about his conduct. It will be documented."

Vanessa smiled triumphantly.

Then Grant continued.

"And your conduct is also being documented."

The smile disappeared.

Daniel packed Vanessa a small overnight bag.

He placed it by the door.

Vanessa walked past him.

"You think you've won?"

Daniel looked at Emma asleep on Evelyn's lap.

"This isn't about winning."

Vanessa leaned closer.

"You have no idea what your daughter is really like when you're gone."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"You're never going to find out again."

Vanessa picked up the bag.

Then paused at the door.

"There are things you don't know."

Daniel said nothing.

Vanessa smiled.

"Ask your perfect little neighbor what she saw before she started recording."

Evelyn's head lifted.

Vanessa walked outside.

Daniel looked at Evelyn.

"What does she mean?"

May you like

Evelyn became pale.

And Daniel suddenly understood that the doghouse was not the whole story.
