Chapter 6 - the thirty seconds that changed everything)

Emma did not see Daniel at first.

She was concentrating too hard on the plate.

It was heavy in her small hands.

Grease made the ceramic slippery.

Vanessa stood behind her.

"Rinse it properly."

Emma nodded.

She reached toward the faucet.

The chair shifted beneath her.

Daniel dropped the grocery bags.

Emma turned.

Her face changed so quickly that Daniel would remember it forever.

Fear.

Confusion.

Then relief so overwhelming that she nearly stepped off the chair into empty air.

"Daddy."

Daniel crossed the kitchen.

He caught her.

The plate slipped.

He took it from her and threw it down.

It shattered.

Vanessa jumped.

"What the hell?"

Daniel lifted Emma.

"Who made you do this?"

Emma wrapped both arms around his neck.

Vanessa recovered.

"Daniel, calm down."

He looked at Emma's hands.

"How long has she been standing here?"

"Ten minutes."

Emma whispered, "Long."

Vanessa glared at her.

Daniel saw it.

A tiny look.

Quick.

Sharp.

A warning.

Emma immediately buried her face.

Daniel turned slowly toward Vanessa.

"Don't look at her like that."

"What are you talking about?"

"Don't."

Vanessa crossed her arms.

"You come home without telling me, smash a plate, and now you're acting insane."

Daniel ignored her.

He carried Emma toward the sink.

Her stool was not nearby.

Only the wooden dining chair.

She had been balancing more than two feet above the floor.

"Emma."

She looked at him.

"Where did you sleep last night?"

Vanessa moved.

Daniel raised his hand.

"Stay there."

Vanessa froze.

Emma's eyes moved between them.

Daniel softened his voice.

"Sweetheart, nobody's going to take you away from me."

Emma's face crumpled.

That sentence had been a guess.

Her reaction told him it was the correct guess.

"Did somebody tell you that?"

Emma nodded.

Daniel felt as if the floor moved.

"Who?"

She looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa laughed nervously.

"This is ridiculous."

Daniel stared at her.

"Don't speak."

"She's four."

"I said don't speak."

Emma pointed toward the backyard.

"She made me sleep out there last night."

Daniel carried her outside.

Vanessa followed.

At the doghouse, Daniel found the blanket.

Sock.

Plastic cup.

Stuffed rabbit.

He touched the blanket.

Still slightly damp from morning dew.

Vanessa began explaining behind him.

"She wouldn't stay in bed."

Daniel stood.

Vanessa kept talking.

"I tried everything."

He turned.

"She is four."

"She knows exactly what she's doing."

"You put my daughter in a doghouse."

"It was one night."

Emma whispered, "Two."

Daniel looked down.

Vanessa's face changed.

Daniel barely recognized his own voice.

"Two?"

Emma nodded.

"First one little. Last one dark."

Vanessa immediately stepped forward.

"She's lying."

Daniel handed the rabbit to Emma.

Then he faced Vanessa.

"Call her a liar again."

Vanessa stared at him.

"Daniel, listen to me."

"Call her a liar."

"You're emotional."

"CALL HER A LIAR."

It was the first time he raised his voice.

Emma flinched.

Daniel stopped instantly.

He closed his eyes.

When he opened them, his voice was quiet again.

"I'm sorry, sweetheart."

Emma pressed her cheek against him.

Vanessa scoffed.

"See? This is what I'm talking about. You baby her."

Daniel's rage came back.

The slap happened.

Hard.

Open-handed.

Vanessa stumbled.

Daniel regretted it almost immediately.

Not because he suddenly felt sympathy for Vanessa.

Because Emma had seen it.

Because the lesson Emma needed was not that stronger people were allowed to hurt weaker people when angry.

But Daniel's anger was still controlling him.

He pointed toward the doghouse.

"You sick bitch. Now you sleep there."

The next minute unfolded exactly as rage often does.

Faster than thought.

He dragged Vanessa toward the doghouse.

Forced her inside.

Closed the latch.

Vanessa screamed.

Daniel stepped backward.

Emma whispered, "Are we mean now too?"

Daniel opened the latch.

Vanessa emerged.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Daniel pulled out his phone.

"911. What's your emergency?"

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

"My four-year-old daughter has been deliberately locked outside overnight by her stepmother. I have physical evidence, a witness, and recorded audio."

Vanessa lunged toward him.

Daniel stepped back.

"Don't touch me."

"Tell them what you did."

"I will."

Vanessa blinked.

"What?"

Daniel spoke into the phone.

"I also struck my wife once after discovering what happened. And I briefly put her inside the same doghouse before opening it when my daughter asked me to stop."

Vanessa stared.

Daniel continued.

"I'm not hiding anything. Send police."

For the first time since he arrived, Vanessa looked genuinely afraid.

Not because Daniel had hit her.

Because he had just taken away the weapon she intended to use.

The truth.

Ten minutes later, two police cars stopped outside the Carter house.

Evelyn Hayes appeared at her gate.

Emma clung to Daniel.

One officer approached Vanessa.

The other approached Daniel.

Vanessa immediately pointed at him.

"He assaulted me."

Daniel nodded.

"I did slap her."

The officer looked surprised by the admission.

Daniel pointed to Emma.

May you like

"Now ask my daughter where she slept."

Vanessa's face went white.
