Chapter 4 - the voicemail Vanessa could not erase)

Daniel listened to Evelyn's voicemail while standing in an elevator.

Please call me. It's about Emma.

He called immediately.

No answer.

The elevator doors opened.

Marcus was waiting.

"Boardroom in five."

Daniel held up one finger and called again.

Still nothing.

He sent a text.

Is Emma okay?

Three minutes later, Evelyn responded.

Call me privately when you can.

Daniel's stomach tightened.

He walked away from Marcus.

"I need ten minutes."

"Daniel, the lenders are already upstairs."

"My daughter comes first."

He entered an empty conference room and called Evelyn.

She answered immediately.

"Daniel."

"What happened?"

Evelyn went silent.

That silence terrified him.

"What happened to Emma?"

"I heard her crying last night."

"Where?"

"Outside."

Daniel gripped the phone.

"Outside where?"

"She said she was in the doghouse."

Daniel's mind rejected the sentence.

"What?"

"I heard Vanessa tell her if she woke another neighbor, she'd stay outside another night."

"No."

"I'm sorry."

"No, I mean that doesn't make sense."

"I know."

"Did you see Emma in there?"

"Not clearly."

"Did you call police?"

"Yes."

Daniel stood.

"What did they do?"

"Vanessa had already brought Emma inside. Emma told them she'd been in bed."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Why would Emma lie?"

Evelyn's voice softened.

"Why does a four-year-old lie when she's scared?"

He turned toward the conference-room window.

Traffic moved far below.

"Do you have proof?"

"I recorded part of it."

Daniel opened his eyes.

"Send it."

"I will."

His phone buzzed ten seconds later.

He played the video.

Dark hedge.

Blurry shapes.

Vanessa's voice.

If you wake another neighbor, you stay out here tomorrow night too.

Daniel stopped the recording.

Played it again.

Then again.

He called Vanessa.

She answered cheerfully.

"Good morning."

"Put Emma on."

"She's getting dressed."

"Now."

Vanessa paused.

"What's wrong?"

"Put my daughter on the phone."

A minute later, Emma whispered, "Hi, Daddy."

Daniel forced his voice to remain calm.

"Hey, sweetheart."

"Hi."

"Did you sleep outside last night?"

Silence.

Daniel waited.

"Emma?"

"I slept in my bed."

Her answer came too quickly.

"You sure?"

"Yes."

He heard Vanessa in the background.

Tell him about your pancakes.

Emma said, "I had pancakes."

Daniel's hand tightened around the phone.

"Can you go somewhere private?"

Another pause.

"No."

"Why?"

"Because."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"I love you."

"I love you too."

"I'm coming home soon."

There was a tiny inhale.

"Today?"

That one word decided everything.

Daniel walked out of the conference room.

Marcus stared at him.

"Where are you going?"

"Home."

"The signing is at eleven."

"Handle it."

"You can't leave now."

Daniel stopped.

"I just heard evidence that somebody may have locked my four-year-old daughter outside overnight."

Marcus's expression changed.

"Go."

Daniel packed in seven minutes.

The earliest direct flight was nearly four hours away.

Driving would take more than seven.

He booked the flight.

Then he called the local police department.

The responding officer explained that Emma had denied being outside.

There were no visible injuries.

Vanessa claimed Emma had briefly gone into the backyard while playing before bedtime.

The officer had documented Evelyn's concern.

"Can you send someone back?"

"We can conduct another welfare check."

"Please."

Daniel called Emma's preschool.

Ms. Brooks answered.

"I'm glad you called."

Daniel froze.

"Why?"

"I emailed you."

"I didn't get anything."

Ms. Brooks hesitated.

"Emma has seemed exhausted this week."

"How exhausted?"

"Falling asleep during story time."

Daniel felt nausea rising.

"Anything else?"

"She arrived without lunch two days ago."

"What?"

"We provided food."

Daniel walked faster through the hotel corridor.

"Why wasn't I called?"

"We sent a notice through your family account."

Daniel knew exactly who monitored that account while he was traveling.

"Has Emma said anything about Vanessa?"

"Nothing specific."

"Has she said anything about sleeping outside?"

Silence.

"Ms. Brooks."

"She said she was having outside dreams."

Daniel stopped walking.

"What does that mean?"

"I was hoping you could tell me."

Daniel canceled the flight.

Driving suddenly felt better.

He did not want to wait at an airport.

He wanted movement.

He wanted control.

He wanted to be close to Emma every minute sooner he could manage.

He threw his bag into the car.

Marcus called him.

"I can get the company jet."

Daniel stopped.

"What?"

"The owner owes me a favor. It's in Delaware right now. They can get to Baltimore in forty minutes."

Daniel turned around.

"When?"

"Be at Martin State Airport in thirty."

Daniel was there in twenty-two.

While waiting, he opened every camera log from the house.

The kitchen camera had stopped transmitting six days ago.

The backyard camera five days ago.

Not internet failure.

Manual disconnection.

He checked the account history.

Administrator access from Vanessa's phone.

Daniel stared at the screen.

His fear became something colder.

Vanessa had not merely lost patience.

She had hidden something.

The jet landed.

Daniel boarded.

As the aircraft began moving, another message arrived from Evelyn.

I found something else.

Attached was a photograph.

Taken through the hedge that morning.

The doghouse door.

A small pink blanket visible inside.

And beside it, one tiny white sock.

Daniel stared at the image until the runway disappeared beneath him.

Then his phone vibrated again.

A message from Vanessa.

Emma is asking why you're angry with her.

May you like

Daniel read it twice.

He had never told Vanessa he was angry.
