THE DEBT HE THOUGHT SHE PAID / Chapter 2 / 15

Chapter 2 - the mistress in the green robe)

Vivian did not follow Julian that evening.

She did not need to.

At 8:06 p.m., the security system sent another notification.

Guest code accessed.

Vivian was not home.

She was sitting inside her attorney's office downtown.

Rachel Kim was across the conference table from her, reading Carter Development's financial statements.

"He's either reckless," Rachel said, "or he assumes you'll never challenge him."

"Both."

Rachel looked up.

"How sure are you about the affair?"

"Enough."

"Proof?"

"Not yet."

"Do you want proof?"

Vivian thought about it.

"No."

Rachel's eyebrows rose.

"That was quick."

"If he is sleeping with someone else, I don't need photographs to make it more disgusting."

Rachel leaned back.

"Fair."

Vivian's phone vibrated again.

Front door opened.

Then kitchen motion detected.

She opened the camera feed.

Julian entered first.

Elena Brooks followed.

Vivian had only seen photographs of her.

In person, Elena looked younger than Vivian expected.

Long dark hair.

Floral dress.

Confident posture.

She walked through the Carter kitchen as if she had been there before.

Julian opened a bottle of wine.

Elena laughed.

The security system recorded sound only in the foyer and exterior areas, not the kitchen.

Vivian did not need to hear them.

She watched Elena run her fingers across the marble island.

Then Julian placed both hands around Elena's waist.

Vivian closed the video.

Rachel was watching her carefully.

"You all right?"

"Yes."

"Vivian."

"I said yes."

Rachel nodded.

She understood the difference between calm and denial.

"What do you want to do?"

Vivian looked toward the windows of the office.

The city below was filling with evening lights.

"I want to know what he is planning."

Rachel tapped one of the financial documents.

"Then the money is the best place to start."

They spent the next hour reconstructing Julian's transfers.

It was worse than Vivian thought.

Over six months, Julian had quietly moved almost sixty thousand dollars out of Carter Development.

Some went to his parents.

Some went to Elena.

Some went to an account Vivian did not recognize.

"And here," Rachel said.

She pointed to a line.

"Fourteen thousand nine hundred."

"What is that?"

"Deposit to a property management company."

Vivian searched the company.

A luxury apartment complex appeared.

Two-bedroom units.

Downtown.

Monthly rent nearly six thousand dollars.

Vivian stared at the screen.

Rachel said nothing.

Vivian checked the date of the deposit.

Three weeks earlier.

"So he rented an apartment."

"Looks like it."

"For himself and Elena."

"Possibly."

Vivian's expression did not change.

Rachel turned her laptop around.

"There's something else."

A digital copy of a draft divorce filing appeared.

Julian's lawyer had not filed it.

But Rachel's legal research team had discovered a preliminary docket request connected to Julian.

"He started the process twelve days ago."

Vivian read the draft.

Julian wanted the marriage dissolved.

He claimed financial incompatibility.

He intended to argue that certain household assets should be considered marital property.

He requested temporary possession of the residence.

Vivian actually laughed.

Rachel watched her.

"What?"

"He thinks the house is marital property."

Rachel smiled slightly.

"That might be useful."

"It is."

The house had been purchased with money Vivian inherited from her mother.

It sat inside a family trust established before the marriage.

Julian had contributed nothing to the purchase.

Nothing to the mortgage, because there was no mortgage.

Nothing to the renovations, because Vivian's trust had paid those too.

He paid half the utilities for eleven months after moving in.

Then stopped when his business became unstable.

Vivian had never cared.

Until now.

Rachel turned to another page.

"He's also claiming he eliminated his pre-existing business debt during the marriage."

Vivian slowly looked up.

Rachel smiled.

"He thinks you paid it."

"He never read the restructuring agreement."

"Apparently not."

Vivian looked at the draft again.

There it was.

A sentence that changed everything.

The debtor's outstanding obligations were satisfied using marital resources provided by the petitioner's spouse.

Satisfied.

Using marital resources.

It was false twice.

The debt had not been satisfied.

It had been assigned.

And the funds came from Vivian's separate inheritance through Carter Strategic Holdings.

Rachel tapped the paper.

"If he files this version, we can destroy that argument in about ten minutes."

Vivian was quiet.

Then she asked, "What if he defaults on the note?"

Rachel looked at her.

"You own the debt."

"What does default trigger?"

"Depends which provisions apply."

"You wrote the agreement."

Rachel understood immediately.

She pulled up the contract.

They read it carefully.

A transfer of corporate funds for purposes outside normal business operations could constitute impairment of collateral.

So could unauthorized distributions that materially reduced the company's value.

Julian had done both.

Rachel leaned back.

"Your husband may have accidentally triggered default while financing his affair."

Vivian stared at her.

Rachel added, "I don't usually enjoy saying sentences like that."

"But?"

"But that one was satisfying."

At 10:31 p.m., Vivian returned home.

The house was quiet.

Julian was not there.

She checked the guest room.

Empty.

Then the primary bedroom.

Nothing appeared disturbed.

She walked into her dressing room.

One drawer was open.

At first, Vivian thought Julian had taken something.

Then she saw the empty hanger.

Her green silk robe was missing.

For a moment, she simply stared at the space.

The robe itself did not matter.

But Elena had been inside Vivian's dressing room.

That mattered.

She had opened Vivian's drawers.

Touched her things.

Chosen something intimate.

Perhaps Julian had encouraged her.

Vivian closed the drawer.

Her phone buzzed.

A text from Julian.

Staying at Marcus's. Long night.

Vivian typed three words.

Have fun tonight.

She sent it.

Then she went downstairs.

She took a clean legal pad from her office.

At the top, she wrote four names.

Julian.

Elena.

Beatrice.

Richard.

Underneath, she wrote one question.

What do they think happens tomorrow?

She stared at it.

Then she wrote another.

What actually happens?

Vivian sat there until almost midnight.

By the time she went upstairs, she had a plan.

Not revenge.

She refused to call it revenge.

Revenge was emotional.

May you like

Revenge was impulsive.

This was accounting.
