Chapter 11 - elena chose a side)

Elena asked to meet again after learning about the land sale.
This time Vivian refused to meet at home.
They met at Rachel's office.
Elena arrived carrying two phones, a laptop, and a paper shopping bag.
"What is that?" Vivian asked.
"Everything Julian left at my apartment."
Vivian looked at the bag.
Elena's expression was tight.
"He's gone."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Rachel gestured toward the conference table.
"Start from the beginning."
Elena sat.
"After the restaurant meeting with you, he came to the apartment."
Vivian said nothing.
"He was furious. Said you were trying to steal his company."
"And you believed him?"
"At first."
Vivian appreciated the honesty.
"Then?"
"He asked me to sign something."
Rachel leaned forward.
"What?"
"A purchase agreement involving my brother."
"The land."
Elena nodded.
"He said Michael could buy it temporarily."
"At sixty-five percent of value," Vivian said.
Elena looked ashamed.
"I didn't know that."
"What did you think was happening?"
"Julian said he needed to move one asset before you froze everything."
Vivian stared at her.
"And that didn't concern you?"
"It did."
"Enough to stop?"
Elena's face reddened.
"No."
Vivian nodded once.
That was the answer she expected.
Elena continued.
"But then he said the property could be transferred back later."
Rachel asked, "To whom?"
"To a new company he and I would own."
Vivian felt almost nothing.
By now, each new betrayal simply confirmed the structure of the old ones.
"What percentage did he offer you?"
"Forty."
Rachel looked at Vivian.
Elena continued.
"I asked where the money would come from."
"And?"
"He said after the divorce he would have access to the house proceeds."
Vivian laughed.
Elena closed her eyes.
"I know."
"He still thought he was getting part of the house."
"Yes."
Rachel said, "What made you change your mind?"
Elena hesitated.
Then opened the laptop.
She displayed a photograph of a text conversation.
Julian to someone named Kara.
Once Vivian and Elena are done fighting, I'll clean up both messes.
Vivian looked at Elena.
Elena's eyes were furious.
"Who's Kara?"
"I don't know."
Vivian almost smiled.
Julian had not learned.
He had simply expanded.
Elena continued.
"I searched his messages."
"How?"
"He gave me his laptop password months ago."
Rachel raised a hand.
"Be careful about what you're providing."
Elena nodded.
"The laptop belongs to me. He used it with permission. His messages were synced to an account he added himself."
Rachel made notes.
"Continue."
There were more conversations.
Julian flirting with Kara.
Julian promising Kara a trip.
Julian telling her Elena was temporary.
Julian mocking Vivian.
Then one message made Vivian go still.
Vivian's too smart to break emotionally. The goal is to make her angry enough to make one mistake.
Kara replied.
What kind of mistake?
Julian answered.
Anything I can use.
Vivian read it twice.
Rachel's expression became hard.
Elena said quietly, "He wanted you to lose control."
Vivian nodded.
The robe.
The mug.
The scarf.
The parents packing boxes.
It had not just been cruelty.
It had been bait.
If Vivian had struck Elena, threatened Julian, destroyed property, screamed something reckless, Julian intended to use it.
The humiliation had been engineered.
"Did he record the confrontation?" Rachel asked.
Elena nodded.
"His phone was on the counter."
Vivian closed her eyes.
Of course.
Julian had wanted evidence.
He expected Vivian to collapse.
Instead, his recording probably captured the exact moment she revealed the debt assignment and instructed everyone to return her property.
Rachel almost smiled.
"That may be useful."
Vivian opened her eyes.
Elena placed the second phone on the table.
"This is the device he used."
Rachel did not touch it.
"We need chain of custody."
"I know."
Elena pushed the bag forward.
"There are also documents."
Inside were copies of the land agreement, apartment lease, cashier's check receipt, and Cedar Ridge notes.
Vivian picked up one page.
A list of expected post-divorce assets.
House equity.
Trust challenge settlement.
Business refinance.
Sale proceeds.
It was like reading a thief's wish list.
Next to the house, Julian had written 400k minimum.
Vivian laughed softly.
Elena stared.
"What?"
"He thought I'd pay him four hundred thousand dollars to go away."
Rachel glanced at her.
"People settle to avoid litigation."
"Not for that."
Elena shifted.
"What happens now?"
Vivian looked at her.
"To Julian?"
"To me."
Vivian considered her.
"I don't know."
Elena nodded.
"I deserve that."
Vivian did not reassure her.
Elena had entered another woman's home knowing at minimum that she was sleeping with that woman's husband.
She had participated in deliberate humiliation.
Regret did not erase choice.
But cooperation mattered.
"You should get your own attorney," Rachel said.
"I did."
"Good."
Elena stood.
Before leaving, she looked at Vivian.
"I am sorry about the robe."
Vivian stared at her.
Elena continued.
"And the mug. And the scarf. All of it."
Vivian's expression remained calm.
"You weren't sorry when you believed he had won."
Elena looked down.
"No."
"Remember that."
Elena nodded.
Then left.
That evening, Vivian returned to the house alone.
For the first time since the confrontation, she entered the upstairs dressing room.
The green robe was folded on a chair.
She touched the fabric.
Then placed it in a donation bag.
Not because Elena had ruined it.
Because Vivian no longer wanted anything associated with that morning.
She took her mother's mug downstairs.
Washed it.
Placed it back in the cabinet.
Then she stood in the kitchen where Julian had slammed down the divorce papers.
The island was clean.
The boxes were gone.
The scarf was back in its drawer.
Everything appeared normal.
But Vivian had changed.
She realized something important.
Getting her house back was not enough.
Getting her company money back was not enough.
Winning the divorce would not be enough.
Julian had built his entire plan around one assumption.
That Vivian would keep rescuing him.
Even after discovering the truth.
Even after the affair.
Even after the humiliation.
Some part of him still believed she would prevent him from experiencing the full consequences of his decisions.
Vivian poured a glass of water.
Then called Rachel.
"When we restructure Carter Development, I want Julian removed from operational control."
Rachel was silent for a second.
"Completely?"
"Completely."
"That's going to be a fight."
"I know."
"You're ready?"
Vivian looked around the kitchen.
May you like
"Yes."
This time, when Julian fell, she was not going to stand underneath him.
