Chapter 15 - The Woman Outside the Mercer House)

Rachel forgot how to walk.
For one second, she simply stood beside the dining table while the world moved around her.
Thomas headed toward the entrance.
Claire followed.
Rachel couldn't.
Daniel touched her shoulder.
"Rachel."
She looked at him.
Nineteen years.
Nineteen years of guilt.
Nineteen years of believing a fifteen-year-old girl had died because Rachel failed to return.
Nineteen years.
"Go," Daniel whispered.
Rachel moved.
She crossed the foyer.
Thomas opened the door.
Winter air entered.
A woman stood near the gate beneath the security lights.
Dark coat.
Dark hair streaked with gray.
Thin.
Hands in her pockets.
She looked older than forty.
Not because of age.
Because of survival.
Rachel stopped on the porch.
The woman raised her eyes.
Rachel knew them immediately.
"Emily?"
The woman's lips trembled.
"Little Rat."
Rachel broke.
Nobody had called her that in nineteen years.
It had been Emily's stupid nickname for her because Rachel once stole crackers from a kitchen cabinet and hid them beneath her mattress.
Rachel ran.
Emily met her halfway.
They collided in the snow.
Rachel wrapped her arms around her sister.
Emily held her.
Both were crying too hard to speak.
Claire stood several feet away.
She had one hand over her mouth.
Emily saw her.
Her body went completely still.
Rachel stepped back.
Emily stared at Claire.
Claire whispered, "Mom?"
Emily made a sound Rachel had never heard from another human being.
Pain and joy mixed together.
She crossed the distance.
Claire fell into her arms.
Rachel watched mother and daughter hold each other for the first time.
Behind them, Walter stood in the doorway.
Elaine beside him.
Daniel and Brooke behind them.
Thomas with his children.
For one perfect minute, nobody spoke.
Then Emily looked over Claire's shoulder.
She saw Walter.
Her face changed.
Walter stepped forward.
"Emily."
She released Claire.
"Don't."
Walter stopped.
Rachel looked between them.
"You knew he was helping you."
Emily laughed bitterly.
"He helped after he helped build the cage."
Walter lowered his eyes.
"He also got me out eventually."
Rachel frowned.
"When?"
"Three years after you escaped."
Rachel stared.
"What?"
"The North Program moved me four times."
Walter whispered, "I kept looking."
Emily nodded.
"He found me."
Rachel looked at Walter.
"Why didn't you bring her to me?"
Emily answered.
"Because I told him not to."
Rachel's face tightened.
"Why?"
Emily looked at her.
"Because Renn was still watching you."
"Watching me?"
"For years."
Rachel stared.
"Why?"
Emily walked toward the house.
Everyone moved inside.
Thomas locked the door.
Security remained outside.
They gathered again around the ruined retirement table.
Emily saw the old photograph.
She touched it.
"God."
Rachel sat beside her.
"Tell us everything."
Emily looked toward Claire.
"Not tonight."
Claire's face fell.
Emily took her hand.
"Not because I don't want to."
She looked exhausted.
"Because there's something you need to understand first."
Thomas asked, "Renn?"
Emily nodded.
"He isn't the person running this."
Walter looked confused.
"Harold is dead."
"I know."
"Edward is dead."
"I know."
"Then who?"
Emily looked at Elaine.
Elaine shook her head.
"I don't know."
Emily turned toward Rachel.
"After Mercer House, the program changed names."
"North Program."
"That was only one version."
Thomas leaned forward.
"What is it now?"
Emily removed a small flash drive from her coat.
"I don't know the official name."
She placed it on the table.
"But I know what they're doing."
Rachel stared at the drive.
Emily continued.
"They stopped trying to erase memories."
Nobody moved.
"They learned something more useful."
"What?" Daniel asked.
Emily looked at him.
"How to manufacture them."
Rachel felt cold.
Thomas took the drive.
"What's on this?"
"Patient files."
"How many?"
"Two hundred and twelve."
Thomas went pale.
Emily looked toward Lily, Mason, and Ava.
Then at Rachel.
"Some of them are children."
Thomas's face changed.
"Where?"
Emily shook her head.
"Different hospitals."
Thomas looked at the drive again.
"Fairview?"
Emily said nothing.
That silence was enough.
Rachel stood.
"Why come here now?"
Emily looked at her sister.
"Because Renn found Claire."
"But we already knew that."
"No."
Emily's eyes filled with fear.
"You don't understand."
She reached into her coat again.
This time she removed a folded photograph.
She placed it in front of Rachel.
The photograph had been taken recently.
Outside Rachel's home.
Brooke was walking toward Daniel's car.
Rachel looked up.
"Why do you have this?"
Emily whispered, "Because it was in Renn's apartment."
Daniel grabbed the photograph.
His face drained.
"Why was he watching Brooke?"
Emily didn't answer immediately.
Rachel's pulse began pounding.
"Emily."
Her sister looked at Brooke.
"I'm sorry."
Brooke stepped backward.
"For what?"
Emily closed her eyes.
Then opened them.
"Renn wasn't interested in Rachel only because she remembered Mercer House."
Daniel moved closer to his daughter.
"Then why?"
Emily looked at Rachel.
"Because Harold Vale kept genetic records."
Rachel felt sick.
"Genetic records of whom?"
"Everyone."
Thomas whispered, "Why?"
Emily's eyes moved toward Brooke again.
"Because the original program wasn't just studying trauma."
The room fell silent.
Rachel suddenly understood that the story she had spent nineteen years trying to uncover was still only the surface.
Walter gripped the edge of the table.
"What were they studying?"
Emily's answer was barely audible.
"Families."
Rachel frowned.
Emily continued.
"Which responses to fear could be passed down."
Daniel stared.
"Passed down?"
"Behavior. Memory susceptibility. Stress response."
Brooke shook her head.
"What does that have to do with me?"
Emily took another piece of paper from her pocket.
She slid it across the table.
Daniel picked it up.
It was a laboratory report.
His expression changed.
"What is this?"
Rachel leaned over.
The report listed DNA markers.
Three subjects.
RACHEL VALE.
HAROLD VALE.
And a third identifier.
SUBJECT B.M.
Brooke Mercer.
Rachel stopped breathing.
"No."
Daniel looked at Emily.
"How the hell does Renn have my daughter's DNA?"
Emily whispered, "That's the question that brought me back."
Brooke began crying.
Daniel put himself between her and the table.
Rachel looked at Thomas.
"Call the police."
Emily grabbed her wrist.
"No."
Rachel stared.
"Why not?"
"Because someone inside the Fairview Police Department is part of this."
Thomas's face hardened.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Walter suddenly sat down.
His hands were shaking.
Emily noticed.
"What?"
Walter looked at the laboratory page.
Then at Brooke.
"Oh God."
Daniel turned.
"What?"
Walter whispered, "I know how they got her DNA."
The room froze.
Rachel stared.
"How?"
Walter looked at his granddaughter.
"When Brooke was six, she was hospitalized."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Appendicitis."
Walter looked sick.
"Renn was consulting at that hospital."
Daniel's face transformed.
"You knew?"
"No."
"Then how do you know now?"
Walter pressed a hand to his forehead.
"Because Harold used the same method."
Rachel stepped forward.
"What method?"
Walter looked at her.
"Routine medical samples."
Thomas swore.
Emily nodded.
"They've been collecting blood from children for decades."
Brooke whispered, "Why me?"
Nobody answered.
Then Emily did.
"Because you're related to Rachel."
Rachel shook her head.
"By marriage."
Emily looked directly at Daniel.
"No."
Daniel stared.
Rachel felt the room become impossibly quiet.
"What do you mean, no?"
Emily closed her eyes.
"Rachel..."
"Say it."
Emily looked at Walter.
Walter's face had gone gray.
Daniel turned toward his father.
"Dad?"
Walter stood too quickly.
His chair fell.
Emily reached into her coat one final time.
She removed an envelope sealed with yellowed tape.
On the front, written in Harold Vale's handwriting, were the words:
MERCER MALE CHILD - PATERNITY CONFIRMATION
Daniel stopped breathing.
Rachel stared at the envelope.
Walter whispered, "That document was destroyed."
Emily looked at him.
"No."
She placed it on the table.
"Harold kept everything."
Daniel reached toward it.
Walter grabbed his arm.
"Don't."
Daniel tore free.
"Why?"
Walter couldn't answer.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
Then Brooke.
Then his father.
Finally at the envelope.
He broke the seal.
Inside was one page.
Daniel read the first line.
His face emptied.
Rachel stepped toward him.
"Daniel?"
He looked at Walter.
"You knew."
Walter began crying.
Daniel's voice rose.
"You knew my entire life?"
Elaine whispered, "Daniel..."
He turned toward her.
"You knew too?"
Elaine covered her mouth.
Brooke was sobbing.
Rachel took the document from Daniel's shaking hands.
Her eyes found the result.
PATERNITY EXCLUDED: WALTER MERCER
She froze.
Daniel was not Walter's biological son.
Below that was another line.
PROBABLE PATERNAL MATCH: DR. HAROLD VALE
Rachel's hands went numb.
Daniel looked at her.
Neither spoke.
If Harold Vale was Daniel's biological father...
Then Rachel and Daniel shared a father.
The truth settled over the room like poison.
Rachel stepped backward.
Daniel looked as though he might collapse.
Elaine whispered, "It isn't what you think."
Emily turned sharply.
"What?"
Elaine began shaking her head.
"The test was wrong."
Walter stared at her.
"You told me it was destroyed."
"It should have been."
Rachel looked at Elaine.
"Was Harold Daniel's father?"
Elaine cried.
"No."
"Then why does the report say he was?"
"Because Harold wanted Walter to believe it."
Walter froze.
Rachel stared.
"What are you saying?"
Elaine stepped toward the table.
"Harold altered the results."
Emily's expression changed.
"Why?"
Elaine looked at Walter.
"To control him."
Walter whispered, "Elaine."
She continued.
"Harold knew Walter was trying to expose Mercer House. He threatened to convince him Daniel wasn't his son."
Daniel stared.
"So who is my father?"
Elaine looked directly at him.
"Walter."
Daniel stopped.
Elaine pointed at the report.
"That paper is a lie."
Emily grabbed the document.
"You can't know that."
"I do."
"How?"
Elaine hesitated.
That hesitation frightened Rachel more than anything else.
"Elaine."
Walter's voice was low.
"How do you know?"
Elaine looked at him.
"I had another test done."
"When?"
"Thirty-nine years ago."
Walter stared.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because by the time I got the result, Harold already had you trapped."
Daniel pressed both hands against the table.
"Where is the real test?"
Elaine looked toward the fireplace.
Walter followed her gaze.
His expression changed.
"No."
Elaine whispered, "I hid it."
"Where?"
"In Samuel's papers."
Walter's father.
Walter walked to a built-in cabinet in the dining room.
He opened a lower drawer.
Inside were old retirement documents and family records.
Elaine pointed toward a wooden panel at the back.
Walter pulled it free.
Behind it sat a slim black box.
Daniel stared.
Walter removed the box.
Inside was an envelope.
Elaine's handwriting.
DANIEL.
Walter gave it to his son.
Daniel opened it.
Rachel stood beside him.
The result was clear.
Walter Mercer was Daniel's biological father.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Brooke cried with relief although she didn't fully understand why.
Rachel breathed again.
For one brief moment, it seemed the worst secret had collapsed.
A lie.
A manipulation created by Harold Vale decades earlier.
Daniel looked at Rachel.
"We're not related."
"No."
He laughed once, brokenly.
Rachel almost did too.
Then Emily picked up Harold's false report.
She turned it over.
Her face changed.
"Wait."
Rachel looked at her.
"What?"
Emily stared at handwriting on the back.
"This wasn't written thirty-nine years ago."
Walter frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Emily handed it to Thomas.
At the bottom was a laboratory processing code.
Thomas opened his phone.
His expression darkened.
"This testing format didn't exist until twelve years ago."
Daniel stared.
"So this is recent?"
Emily nodded.
"Someone recreated Harold's old lie."
Rachel felt cold again.
"Why?"
Emily looked toward the windows.
Outside, snow fell over Fairview.
"Because they wanted Daniel to find it."
Walter shook his head.
"For what purpose?"
Emily's eyes moved toward Rachel.
"To break the family."
Thomas looked at the flash drive.
"And distract us."
Rachel understood.
"From what?"
Thomas connected the drive to an offline laptop.
Folders appeared.
Hundreds.
He opened the newest directory.
FAIRVIEW ACTIVE SUBJECTS.
Everyone gathered around.
Names filled the screen.
Children.
Adults.
Hospital patients.
Police officers.
Teachers.
Rachel whispered, "How many people?"
Thomas scrolled.
Then stopped.
At the bottom were five names marked PRIORITY.
LILY WHITAKER.
MASON WHITAKER.
AVA WHITAKER.
BROOKE MERCER.
And one final name.
Rachel leaned closer.
Her heart stopped.
RACHEL MERCER.
Beside her name was a status.
PHASE TWO APPROVED.
Daniel read it.
"What is Phase Two?"
Emily went pale.
"No."
Rachel turned.
"You know?"
Emily grabbed the laptop.
She scrolled through folders.
"No, no, no."
"Emily."
Her sister looked terrified.
"They weren't supposed to be ready."
"Ready for what?"
Emily closed the laptop.
"We have to leave."
Thomas stood.
"Where?"
"Anywhere away from this house."
Walter frowned.
"Why?"
Emily pointed toward the ceiling.
"Because if Rachel is listed for Phase Two, they've already been inside."
Daniel looked around.
"What does that mean?"
Emily turned to Rachel.
"When was the last time you lost time?"
Rachel stared.
"What?"
"Minutes you couldn't account for. A drive you don't remember finishing. Waking somewhere and not knowing how you got there."
Rachel's blood went cold.
Three weeks earlier.
She had driven home from the hospital.
She remembered turning onto Brookside Avenue.
The next clear memory was sitting in her driveway nearly forty minutes later.
She had blamed exhaustion.
Emily saw the answer on her face.
"When?"
Rachel whispered, "Three weeks ago."
Emily grabbed her coat.
"We're leaving now."
Thomas moved toward the door.
Then every light in the Mercer house went out.
Darkness swallowed the dining room.
Ava screamed.
Daniel grabbed Brooke.
Thomas shouted for his children.
Security radios crackled outside.
Then went silent.
Rachel heard something in the hallway.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Deliberate.
Emily caught her hand.
"Don't move."
A red light appeared near the staircase.
Small.
Blinking.
Rachel stopped breathing.
She had seen that light before.
Nineteen years ago.
Above the basement door.
A speaker hidden somewhere in the house clicked.
Static.
Then a man's voice filled the darkness.
Calm.
Familiar.
The same voice Rachel remembered telling frightened children to count backward.
Michael Renn.
"Hello, Rachel."
Daniel shouted, "Where are you?"
The voice ignored him.
"Let's see how much you really remember."
Rachel tightened her grip on Emily's hand.
Renn began counting.
"Ten."
Rachel's vision blurred.
Emily whispered urgently, "Don't listen."
"Nine."
Rachel heard Brooke crying.
"Eight."
The dining room began to disappear.
Not physically.
Inside Rachel's mind.
She was fourteen again.
Concrete walls.
Red light.
Emily screaming.
"Seven."
Rachel fell to her knees.
Daniel reached for her.
Emily shouted, "Don't touch her!"
"Six."
Rachel's breath stopped.
A memory opened.
Not the basement.
Something after it.
A room.
Walter arguing with Harold.
Elaine crying.
Renn holding a camera.
And another man standing in the corner.
Someone Rachel had never remembered.
"Five."
Rachel saw his face.
She gasped.
Emily knelt beside her.
"What do you see?"
Rachel stared into the darkness.
The man from the memory had been younger.
But she knew him.
She had seen him recently.
At the hospital.
At Thomas's children's accident review.
At Walter's retirement planning meeting.
A person everyone trusted.
"Four."
Rachel grabbed Emily's coat.
"I remember him."
Emily went still.
"Who?"
Rachel opened her mouth.
Before she could say the name, glass shattered somewhere upstairs.
Security shouted outside.
The speaker died.
Emergency lights flickered on.
Thomas drew his children behind him.
Daniel helped Rachel stand.
Walter looked toward the stairs.
A shadow moved across the upper landing.
Then vanished.
Police sirens approached in the distance.
Rachel stared upward.
Someone had been inside the Mercer house.
Someone who knew the program.
Someone who had known Rachel for years.
Emily gripped her hand.
"Who did you remember?"
Rachel looked toward Thomas.
Then Walter.
Then Daniel.
Her face had gone completely white.
"The man in the basement wasn't working for Renn."
Emily frowned.
"Then who was he?"
Rachel looked toward the open front door as police vehicles filled the driveway.
She whispered the name.
Thomas's expression changed instantly.
"No."
Rachel stared at him.
"You know him."
Thomas shook his head.
"Rachel, that's impossible."
Walter stepped forward.
"What name?"
Rachel looked at the family surrounding her.
The husband who had humiliated her.
The daughter who had learned to apologize.
The sister she had believed dead.
The niece she had finally found.
The children she had saved.
The parents who had hidden nearly half a lifetime of secrets.
Then she said the one name that changed everything.
"Dr. Stephen Whitaker."
Thomas stopped breathing.
His older brother.
A man presumed dead for twenty-one years.
Thomas whispered, "Stephen died before Mercer House closed."
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
She remembered the basement clearly now.
Stephen Whitaker standing behind Michael Renn.
Watching.
Taking notes.
Smiling.
"He was alive."
Thomas stepped backward.
Rachel continued.
"And if the man I saw at the hospital last month was really him..."
She looked toward the darkness beyond the staircase.
"...then he still is."
Outside, police flooded the property.
Inside, Thomas opened the flash drive again.
A hidden folder appeared on the screen.
It had not been visible before the power outage.
One file.
One video.
Created less than sixty seconds earlier.
Thomas clicked it.
The screen showed a live camera feed.
A room none of them recognized.
A metal chair stood in the center.
Behind it was a wall painted with the old Mercer House emblem.
Then someone entered the frame.
An older man.
Silver hair.
Thin face.
Rachel gasped.
Thomas dropped into a chair.
"Stephen."
The man looked directly into the camera.
As though he could see them.
Then he smiled.
"Rachel," he said.
"Congratulations."
Everyone in the dining room froze.
Stephen Whitaker leaned closer to the camera.
"You finally remembered the wrong brother."
Thomas stared at the screen.
Rachel's pulse hammered.
Stephen continued.
"Now perhaps you're ready to remember what Thomas did."
Thomas turned pale.
Rachel looked at him.
"What is he talking about?"
Thomas shook his head.
"I don't know."
On the screen, Stephen smiled wider.
Then the video cut to black.
A new file automatically appeared.
Its name contained only four words.
THOMAS WHITAKER - SUBJECT ZERO
Rachel slowly turned toward the man who had helped her uncover everything.
Thomas stared at the screen as if he had never seen his own name before.
Emily whispered, "Don't open it."
Rachel looked at Thomas.
He looked back at her.
And for the first time since the day his children nearly died, Rachel could not tell whether the fear in Thomas Whitaker's eyes came from something he had forgotten...
May you like
Or something he had been hiding all along.
END OF PART ONE
