Chapter 11 - The Man Who Knew Daniel's Name)

Police took the threat seriously.

Thomas took it more seriously.

Within an hour, private security surrounded the hospital board floor.

Rachel hated it.

She hated feeling watched.

She hated being protected.

Most of all, she hated that Dr. Michael Renn knew where she was.

Daniel stood near the conference room door.

He had been quiet for an hour.

Finally Rachel said, "Go home."

He looked at her.

"I'm not leaving."

"Brooke needs someone."

"She's with Mom."

"Daniel."

He stepped closer.

"I'm staying."

Rachel studied him.

The man standing in front of her looked different from the husband who had dismissed her mornings as empty and her Tuesdays as hobbies.

Fear had humbled him.

Not enough.

But some.

"What do you know about the deposits?" she asked.

He frowned.

"What deposits?"

"Your father transferred money into your company."

Daniel nodded.

"I told you."

"Where did it go?"

"What?"

"After it entered your business."

He looked confused.

"Operating accounts."

"All of it?"

"I assume."

"Don't assume."

Daniel opened his banking app.

Thomas joined them.

They reviewed nine months of transactions.

Three transfers immediately stood out.

Payments to a consulting company.

NORTHSTAR STRATEGIC ADVISORY.

Thomas stared.

"North."

Rachel felt cold.

Daniel shook his head.

"I didn't authorize these."

"Who has account access?" Thomas asked.

"My CFO. Me. Dad had temporary authority during the acquisition last year."

Rachel looked at Daniel.

"Walter moved money through your company."

Daniel's face hardened.

"Why?"

Thomas searched the corporate registration.

The owner appeared.

Michael Renn.

Daniel swore.

Rachel stared toward Walter's room.

"He was paying Renn."

"Or being extorted," Thomas said.

Daniel looked at him.

"What makes you say that?"

"Because the amounts keep increasing."

They confronted Walter.

He didn't deny it.

"Renn contacted me fourteen months ago," he said.

Rachel stared.

"When Emily began remembering."

Walter nodded.

"He wanted money."

"For what?"

"Silence."

"About Emily?"

"About everyone."

Daniel stepped forward.

"So you used my company to pay him?"

Walter looked ashamed.

"After my accounts started being audited, I needed another route."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"You made me part of this."

"I was protecting you."

"No. You were protecting yourself."

Walter flinched.

Daniel continued.

"You let me think my wife was lazy while you knew what she'd survived."

Rachel looked at him.

Walter said, "I couldn't tell you."

"You could have told me enough."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"You watched me become exactly the kind of man who thought silence meant weakness."

Walter lowered his eyes.

Daniel walked out.

Rachel followed.

He stood alone in the corridor.

She stopped several feet away.

He looked at her.

"I called you an embarrassment."

Rachel said nothing.

"I let Brooke treat you like..."

He couldn't finish.

Rachel folded her arms.

Daniel whispered, "I don't know how to fix that."

"You don't."

He nodded.

"You live differently afterward."

Daniel looked at her.

"Is there an afterward for us?"

Rachel's expression did not change.

"I don't know."

The answer hurt.

He accepted it.

That evening investigators traced the threatening message.

It came from a disposable phone.

But the device briefly connected to hospital Wi-Fi.

Security footage showed a man wearing maintenance clothes entering through a side corridor.

Thomas recognized him.

Not Renn.

A former Mercer Development employee named Paul Grady.

Walter reacted instantly.

"Find him."

Police did.

At eleven forty, Paul Grady was discovered unconscious inside an abandoned warehouse.

He had been attacked.

Beside him was a recorder.

On it was one message.

Rachel listened.

A man's voice.

Dr. Michael Renn.

"Rachel Vale survived because she forgot. If she remembers what happened after the basement door opened, the Mercer family won't survive it."

Rachel replayed the first two words.

Rachel Vale.

She looked at Walter.

"Why did he call me Vale?"

Walter froze.

Daniel stared.

"Rachel Mercer was Rachel Carter before we married."

Rachel looked at Walter.

Her voice came out barely audible.

"Why did Renn call me Rachel Vale?"

Walter sat down.

For the first time, he looked truly defeated.

"Because Harold Vale wasn't only Emily's father."

Rachel felt the world stop.

May you like

Walter looked at her.

"He was yours too."
