Chapter 14 - Elaine's Secret)

Daniel stared at his mother.
"Mom?"
Elaine stood slowly.
Walter closed his eyes.
Rachel felt the room tilt.
"You were there?"
Elaine didn't answer.
Thomas moved his children toward the hallway.
Family guests began whispering.
Walter said, "Everyone except immediate family needs to leave."
Elaine snapped, "Sit down."
Walter stared at her.
For forty-two years of marriage, Walter had obeyed that tone more often than he cared to admit.
Not now.
"Leave," he told the guests.
Within minutes, the dining room emptied.
Only Rachel, Daniel, Brooke, Walter, Elaine, Thomas, Claire, and the children remained.
Rachel faced Elaine.
"What did you do?"
Elaine's judgmental composure disappeared.
"I was a nurse."
Rachel remembered Sarah Carter.
Her mother had been a nurse too.
"At Mercer House?"
"Occasionally."
Rachel's stomach twisted.
"Did you know my mother?"
Elaine's eyes filled.
"Yes."
Rachel stepped back.
Of all the lies, this one felt personal.
"You knew who I was the day Daniel brought me home."
Elaine nodded.
Rachel laughed quietly.
Both of Daniel's parents.
Both had recognized her.
Neither said a word.
Daniel stared at them.
"You let me marry someone connected to all of this and never told either of us?"
Elaine whispered, "We thought it was over."
Rachel's voice sharpened.
"You thought I forgot."
Elaine looked at her.
"Yes."
Rachel moved closer.
"What happened after I opened the basement door?"
Elaine began crying.
Walter said, "Elaine."
"No."
Rachel slammed her hand against the table.
"No more protecting each other."
Elaine flinched.
Rachel repeated.
"What happened?"
Elaine sat down.
"Renn gave you an injection."
"I remember."
"You fought him."
"What happened to Emily?"
"Harold hit her."
"I know."
"Then Emily told you something."
Rachel stopped breathing.
"What?"
Elaine looked at Claire.
Claire's face went pale.
Rachel whispered, "What did she tell me?"
Elaine's voice shook.
"That she was pregnant."
Silence.
Rachel remembered.
A flash.
Emily crying.
Rachel holding her.
A whisper.
There's a baby.
Rachel gripped the chair.
"She told me."
"Yes."
"Then what?"
"Renn wanted to move her immediately."
"And I tried to stop him."
"Yes."
Walter looked confused.
"You never told me this."
Elaine wiped her face.
"You weren't in the room."
Rachel continued.
"Why does Emily think I did something?"
Elaine looked at her with terrible sadness.
"Because you made a decision."
Rachel's breath stopped.
"What decision?"
"The police were coming."
Walter had made the anonymous call.
Investigators were minutes away.
Elaine explained.
Renn planned to move both girls.
There was only one maintenance tunnel out.
Rachel had found the key.
But she could only get one person through before staff blocked the corridor.
Rachel shook her head.
"No."
Elaine continued.
"Emily told you to go."
"No."
"She made you."
"No."
"Rachel, you didn't abandon her."
Rachel was crying now.
"You locked the door behind you."
The memory hit.
A steel door.
Emily on the other side.
Rachel screaming.
Emily shouting:
GO!
Rachel turning the key.
Because locking it delayed Renn.
Because Emily believed police would reach her.
Because Rachel had to escape and tell them where Emily was.
Rachel whispered, "I locked her inside."
"To protect her."
"But they moved her another way."
Elaine nodded.
Rachel collapsed into the chair.
For nineteen years, her mind had transformed a desperate act of protection into guilt without context.
Daniel knelt beside her.
He didn't touch her until she reached for him.
Then she did.
Rachel whispered, "I left her."
Daniel said, "You were a child."
"I left her."
Claire knelt on the other side.
"My mother wanted you to survive."
Rachel looked at her.
Claire continued.
"And now you're going to find her."
Rachel cried into Claire's shoulder.
Across the table, Brooke was crying too.
Elaine stood.
"I'm sorry."
Rachel looked at her.
Elaine had spent years judging her.
Calling her unmotivated.
Unfocused.
Not good enough for Daniel.
Rachel understood why now.
Elaine had not despised Rachel for being weak.
She had been afraid Rachel would remember.
"You weren't cruel because you hated me," Rachel said.
Elaine's face crumpled.
"You were cruel because you were guilty."
Elaine lowered her head.
Rachel stood.
"I can understand fear."
Elaine looked hopeful.
Rachel continued.
"I don't have to forgive what you did with it."
The hope vanished.
Walter looked at his wife.
For the first time, neither of them could hide behind the Mercer name.
Then Thomas's phone rang.
He answered.
His face changed.
"What?"
Everyone looked at him.
Thomas turned toward Rachel.
"Security found someone outside."
"Renn?"
Thomas shook his head.
"A woman."
Rachel stopped breathing.
May you like
Thomas's voice dropped.
"She says her name is Emily."
