Chapter 13 - arthur sterling's final safeguard)

Rebecca did not run when Jessica entered Arthur's old office.

She stood beside the original Crown server cabinet.

The silver authentication device lay on the desk.

Cole and armed officers remained outside the doorway.

Jessica had insisted on entering first only because Rebecca demanded it.

"No police in the room," Rebecca had said over the building intercom. "Or I erase everything."

Cole allowed Jessica ten feet.

No more.

Rebecca looked exhausted now.

For the first time, control seemed to be slipping.

"You found the bank box," she said.

Jessica did not answer.

Rebecca smiled weakly.

"Arthur always loved puzzles."

"He didn't trust you."

"He didn't know me well."

"He knew enough about Crown."

Rebecca touched the server cabinet.

"Arthur built this because he understood his family was dangerous."

"Then Frank corrupted it."

"Frank was predictable."

"And Wendy?"

"More predictable."

Jessica glanced at the authentication device.

"Why help them?"

"I didn't."

"You protected their crimes."

"I redirected their crimes."

Jessica waited.

Rebecca continued.

"Frank moved money through hidden subsidiaries. Wendy took her share. Denton disguised the transfers. I used the network to acquire strategic assets before competitors could."

"With stolen money."

"With money already being stolen."

"That is not the moral distinction you think it is."

Rebecca's jaw tightened.

"For fifteen years, Sterling Holdings survived despite the Sterling family."

Jessica almost laughed.

"You sound like Wendy."

Rebecca looked offended.

"No."

"She believes blood entitles her to control. You believe intelligence entitles you to control. Same disease. Different excuse."

Rebecca's eyes hardened.

"You know nothing about running a company this size."

"No. But I know theft when I see it."

Rebecca picked up the silver device.

"Do you know what this can do?"

"Luke told me."

"No, he told you part of it."

Rebecca turned toward the server.

"The original Crown system contains Arthur's emergency authority certificates. With this device, I can permanently separate six subsidiaries from Sterling Holdings."

"Then what?"

"I run them."

"Until you're arrested."

"By then ownership will be tied up in four jurisdictions."

Jessica studied her.

"You really believe complexity equals safety."

"It usually does."

Jessica glanced toward the doorway.

Cole remained outside.

Waiting.

Rebecca continued.

"Luke should have accepted my offer."

"He doesn't negotiate well from coffins."

A flicker of anger.

Good.

Jessica needed Rebecca emotional.

"Frank wanted Luke dead," Rebecca said. "Wendy allowed it. I only ensured continuity."

"You kept him in a coffin."

"I didn't put him there."

"You knew he was alive."

Rebecca's silence filled the room.

Jessica stepped closer.

"And you did nothing."

"I protected the company."

"You protected yourself."

Rebecca reached for the server.

Jessica's eyes moved toward a brass plaque mounted beneath Arthur's desk.

She had seen that plaque before.

Not here.

In the bank folder.

Arthur had sketched it beside a handwritten note.

Crown can only rule while the King consents.

At the time, Jessica assumed it was metaphor.

Now she looked at the old server.

A small mechanical key slot sat beneath the digital reader.

King.

Arthur.

Luke's inherited credential.

The brass key from Luke's wallet.

Jessica had kept it.

Cole had wanted it logged into evidence, but after the bank box opened, investigators returned it temporarily because it appeared to have no other use.

Jessica reached into her coat pocket.

Rebecca noticed.

"What are you doing?"

Jessica removed the brass key.

Rebecca's face changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"Charles Denton gave it to Luke."

Rebecca moved toward her.

Cole stepped into the doorway.

"Stop."

Rebecca froze.

Jessica walked toward the server.

"What does this open?"

Rebecca said nothing.

Jessica inserted the key.

It fit.

She turned it.

The server screen illuminated.

CROWN ROOT AUTHORITY.

OWNER OVERRIDE AVAILABLE.

Rebecca whispered, "Don't."

Jessica looked at her.

"Why?"

"You don't understand the architecture."

"Then explain it."

Rebecca remained silent.

Jessica pressed the only illuminated button.

A request appeared.

OWNER CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.

Luke's biometric authorization was required remotely.

Jessica called him.

"Luke."

"I'm here."

"I found your father's override."

Silence.

Then Luke understood.

"What does it ask?"

"Owner confirmation."

"Send it."

Cole connected Luke through secure authentication.

Luke verified identity through facial recognition and voice.

The screen changed.

CROWN PROTOCOL STATUS:

ACTIVE.

OPTIONS:

SUSPEND.

TRANSFER.

TERMINATE.

Rebecca lunged.

An officer caught her before she reached Jessica.

"No."

Jessica looked at the screen.

Rebecca struggled.

"You terminate Crown and you destroy emergency governance protections Arthur built."

Jessica looked at her.

"Arthur built them because he was afraid his family would abuse power."

"He built them to preserve the company."

"And what preserved the company became the weapon used against his son."

Jessica selected TERMINATE.

The system requested confirmation from current owner authority.

Luke's voice came through the secure phone.

"Do it."

Jessica confirmed.

CROWN PROTOCOL TERMINATED.

All emergency transfers initiated within the prior seventy-two hours were automatically suspended pending board verification.

Rebecca stopped struggling.

For the first time, she looked defeated.

Cole approached and placed her under arrest.

Jessica turned toward Arthur's desk.

A hidden drawer popped open when Crown terminated.

Inside was one final envelope.

Addressed not to Luke.

Not to Michael.

To whoever ends Crown.

Jessica opened it.

Arthur's handwriting filled a single page.

If you are reading this, then the structure I created to protect Sterling Holdings became more dangerous than the family it was meant to restrain.

That is my failure.

Power should never survive merely because its creator believed he had good intentions.

End it.

Then make them answer for what they chose to do with it.

Jessica folded the letter.

Rebecca stared at her.

"You think this fixes your family?"

Jessica looked toward the door.

"No."

May you like

She placed Arthur's letter inside her coat.

"It only removes their hiding place."
