Chapter 11 - the doctor who changed his mind)

Martin Keller looked destroyed.
He had not shaved.
His expensive coat was stained.
His hands trembled as he sat across from federal investigators.
The recording had been made Tuesday night at St. Augustine Medical Center.
Frank's voice was unmistakable.
"You said the dose would stop him."
Keller answered, "It suppressed respiration. He needs treatment."
Frank said, "No treatment."
Keller whispered, "He isn't dead."
Then Wendy's voice.
Quiet.
Controlled.
"He will be."
Jessica listened from the secure conference room.
Luke sat beside her.
He had been discharged from intensive care into a guarded private medical suite.
His strength had returned enough for him to walk short distances.
When Wendy's voice came through the recording, Luke closed his eyes.
Jessica reached for his hand.
He did not pull away.
Frank continued on the recording.
"Sign it."
Keller said, "I can't certify him."
Wendy replied, "You already have."
Silence.
Then Frank again.
"Two million. Tonight."
The recording ended.
Nobody spoke.
Cole looked at Luke.
"That's conspiracy to murder."
Luke stared at the table.
"My mother knew I was alive."
Jessica squeezed his hand.
He looked at her.
For the first time since the coffin, the pain in his face was not physical.
It was grief.
Not grief for a dead parent.
Something worse.
Grief for the parent he had believed existed.
Keller entered under guard.
Luke stood.
Jessica almost stopped him.
Then didn't.
Keller froze when he saw Luke.
"I'm sorry."
Luke walked toward him slowly.
"You watched them put me in a body bag."
Keller looked down.
"I panicked."
"You signed my death certificate."
"I know."
"You let them send me to a funeral home."
Keller's eyes filled.
"I thought you were going to die anyway."
Luke's voice remained calm.
"That isn't an explanation."
"No."
Keller wiped his face.
"It started years ago. Frank found out I had gambling debts. He paid them."
Jessica watched Keller carefully.
"Then owned you."
"Yes."
"Wendy?"
"She knew."
"What happened Tuesday?"
Keller swallowed.
"Frank contacted me before Luke collapsed. Said there might be a medical emergency."
"You knew he had been drugged?"
"Not until the hospital."
"What drug?"
Keller named the sedative and blocking agent.
"Who administered it?"
"I don't know."
Luke said, "The bottle."
Keller nodded.
"Frank told me exposure would occur through a drink."
Jessica felt anger rise.
"You allowed it."
Keller looked at her.
"I thought the dose would cause temporary incapacity. Frank said Luke would be forced to resign after a health crisis."
"You believed that?"
"No."
The honesty surprised everyone.
Keller continued.
"I believed what I needed to believe."
Cole asked, "Why record Frank?"
"Because when I realized Luke was still alive, I knew they might blame me."
Self-preservation.
Not conscience.
Jessica understood.
"Why run?"
"Frank sent someone to my house."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
"Charles Denton?"
Keller shook his head.
"No."
"Daniel Rusk?"
"No."
"Michael?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Keller whispered a name.
"Rebecca Hall."
Jessica froze.
Rebecca Hall.
Chief strategy officer.
Luke's trusted executive.
The woman Jessica had dismissed as professionally complicated but harmless.
Cole frowned.
"What did she want?"
"She said Crown had instructed me to disappear."
Luke looked stunned.
"Rebecca used the name?"
"Yes."
Keller continued.
"She told me the financial network had to survive regardless of what happened to Frank or Wendy."
Jessica understood.
"The money."
Keller nodded.
"Frank and Wendy stole it."
"But?"
"But Rebecca turned it into something larger."
Cole leaned forward.
"How large?"
Keller laughed once without humor.
"You think three hundred million is the story?"
Nobody answered.
Keller looked at Luke.
"Your company has been used for years to guarantee private investments, hidden acquisitions and offshore debt."
Luke's face hardened.
"By whom?"
"Rebecca."
"Why?"
"Because she believed the Sterling family was too unstable to control its own company."
Jessica thought back.
Rebecca Hall had spent ten years beside Luke.
She had watched Wendy interfere.
Frank manipulate.
Michael waste money.
Luke work himself into exhaustion.
Maybe she had decided she could run everything better.
Keller continued.
"Frank thought Crown was his weapon. Wendy thought Crown protected her inheritance. Rebecca realized Crown could become an invisible government inside Sterling Holdings."
Luke whispered, "She used all of them."
Cole asked, "Did Rebecca order Luke's death?"
Keller hesitated.
"Frank ordered the drugging."
"Wendy approved the fake death."
"Yes."
"Rebecca?"
"Rebecca ordered the funeral accelerated."
Jessica felt cold.
"Why?"
Keller looked at her.
"Because if Luke woke up before the burial, everything collapsed."
Luke's hand tightened into a fist.
Cole stood.
"Where is Rebecca now?"
Nobody knew.
Her phone was off.
Her apartment was empty.
Corporate security footage showed her leaving Sterling Tower twenty minutes after the board meeting.
She took no luggage.
No car.
But one camera captured her carrying a thin silver laptop case.
Luke stared at the image.
"That's not her laptop."
Jessica looked at him.
"What is it?"
Luke leaned closer.
"The Sterling root server key."
Cole frowned.
Luke explained.
"Offline authentication device. It can authorize emergency transactions."
"How much?"
Luke looked toward Keller.
"Everything."
Jessica's phone vibrated.
A news alert appeared.
STERLING HOLDINGS ANNOUNCES EMERGENCY ASSET RESTRUCTURING.
Luke went pale.
Jessica opened the article.
Someone had issued an authenticated corporate directive transferring control of six international subsidiaries to a newly formed private holding company.
Authorized under Crown Protocol.
May you like
Rebecca was not running away.
She was stealing the company.
