Chapter 7 - the woman who knew too much)

They called the detention center.

Ruth Bell was gone.

Transferred, they were told.

Except no authorized transfer had been ordered.

A transport vehicle had arrived with valid paperwork.

Two uniformed officers had signed her out.

Security footage showed Ruth being placed inside a county van.

The van was found abandoned thirty minutes later.

The real officers whose names appeared on the paperwork had been working elsewhere.

Voss had taken her.

Torres ordered an immediate search.

Peter remained under police supervision at the lake house.

Daniel wanted him arrested.

Torres wanted him talking.

“We can charge him later,” she said. “Right now he knows more about Voss than anyone alive.”

Peter corrected her.

“Anyone you know is alive.”

Daniel hated the sentence.

Claire remained focused on Ruth.

“Why would Voss need her?”

Peter answered.

“Ruth helped Charles move the archive before he died.”

“You said the registry was here.”

“The archive is here. The registry is not.”

Daniel remembered Charles’s recording.

“What is the difference?”

“The archive contains evidence. The registry contains identities and subject classifications.”

Claire looked toward the file cabinet with her name.

“Am I in it?”

Peter did not answer quickly enough.

Claire stepped closer.

“Am I in it?”

“Yes.”

Daniel turned sharply.

“How?”

“You married Daniel.”

“That does not make her a patient.”

“It made her useful.”

Claire felt the room shrink around her.

“What classification?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’ve seen the registry.”

“Only part of it.”

“What did mine say?”

Peter looked at Daniel.

Then back at Claire.

“Secondary anchor.”

Daniel asked, “What does that mean?”

Peter’s face tightened.

“In the early trials, Voss discovered memories connected to strong emotional bonds were harder to alter. Family. Romantic partners. Children.”

Claire whispered, “Anchors.”

“Yes.”

Peter nodded toward Daniel.

“Daniel was my anchor.”

Daniel remembered the recordings.

Peter had resisted because he remembered his brother.

Claire understood.

“So I became Daniel’s.”

“Yes.”

“And my children?”

Peter was silent.

Claire’s eyes widened.

“What were my children?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I saw only a code.”

“What code?”

Peter looked deeply uncomfortable.

“Generation Two.”

Daniel’s anger flashed.

“They experimented on my sons?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what does Generation Two mean?”

“I’ve been trying to find out.”

Torres interrupted.

“Ruth first.”

Peter agreed.

“Voss will force her to reveal where Charles placed the registry.”

“Where would he take her?”

“There are old Mercer properties.”

“How many?”

“Dozens.”

“Can we narrow them?”

Peter walked toward a map stored in the cabinet.

“Voss prefers controlled environments. Medical infrastructure. Isolated access.”

Torres called in analysts.

Within two hours they narrowed the possibilities to four former clinics.

One had become apartments.

One had burned down.

One had been demolished.

The fourth was an abandoned rehabilitation center thirty miles west of the city.

It belonged to a shell company connected to Adrian.

Daniel noticed immediately.

“If Adrian is helping you, why does he own a Voss property?”

Peter replied, “Because Voss made him buy it.”

“You have an answer for everything.”

“I had eighteen years to collect answers.”

Daniel walked away.

Claire followed.

“You don’t trust him.”

“He kidnapped our sons.”

“He says he was trying to protect them.”

“He planned to take them without telling us.”

“Yes.”

“That matters.”

“I know.”

Daniel looked at her.

“And Ruth?”

Claire lowered her eyes.

“I don’t know what to feel.”

“She nearly killed them.”

“She may also have saved them.”

Daniel leaned against the old desk.

“This family has become a collection of people saving us by hurting us.”

Claire took his hand.

“Then we stop letting other people decide what saving us looks like.”

Daniel looked at her.

It was the first thing that had felt solid since the balcony.

Torres entered.

“We found something.”

Satellite data showed electricity usage at the abandoned rehabilitation center.

Minimal but consistent.

Someone was using it.

A tactical team prepared to enter before nightfall.

Daniel insisted on going.

Torres refused.

Peter said, “He should come.”

Torres glared at him.

“You do not give orders.”

“Voss may only talk if Daniel is there.”

“That is exactly why Daniel should not be there.”

Peter looked at his brother.

“Voss has waited eighteen years for this family to come back together.”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“I don’t know yet.”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because I don’t know.”

Daniel studied Peter.

For the first time he saw something beyond anger and suspicion.

Fear.

Peter was afraid of Voss.

Not the ordinary fear of someone dangerous.

The deeper fear of someone who had lived inside your mind.

Daniel decided.

“I’m going.”

Torres argued.

Claire argued harder.

In the end Daniel traveled in an armored police vehicle while Claire remained with the boys.

Peter rode in a separate vehicle under guard.

The rehabilitation center stood behind overgrown trees.

Windows were boarded.

The entrance was chained.

Yet a light glowed faintly on the third floor.

Police entered from three sides.

Daniel waited outside as ordered.

Two minutes passed.

Then five.

Torres’s voice came over the radio.

“First floor clear.”

Another voice.

“Second floor clear.”

Then silence.

Static.

A gunshot cracked inside.

Daniel moved toward the entrance.

An officer stopped him.

“Stay here.”

Another gunshot.

Then Torres came over the radio.

“We found Ruth.”

Daniel exhaled.

“Alive?”

A pause.

“Yes.”

Then Torres added.

“But Voss is gone.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

The doors opened.

Paramedics brought Ruth out on a stretcher.

She was conscious.

Her face was bruised.

One wrist was bandaged.

When she saw Daniel, she grabbed his sleeve.

“He knows.”

Daniel leaned closer.

“Knows what?”

“Where Charles put it.”

“The registry?”

Ruth nodded.

“Where?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“He never hid it in a building.”

Daniel frowned.

“Then where is it?”

May you like

Ruth whispered.

“Inside someone.”
