Chapter 2 - the room that was never on the plans)

The Whitmore villa had been completed four years earlier.

Daniel knew every room.

He had argued with architects over closet depth.

He had chosen the marble.

Claire had selected the kitchen cabinets.

They had walked through the construction site every weekend before the walls were closed.

There was no hidden room behind the wine cellar.

Yet at eleven twenty that night, Detective Torres showed Daniel a live photograph sent from the forensic team.

A section of decorative shelving had opened on concealed hinges.

Behind it was a narrow passage.

At the end stood a steel door.

“There was a keypad,” Torres said.

“Who knew the code?”

“We found the door open.”

Daniel looked at the image.

“What is inside?”

“Restraints.”

His jaw tightened.

“Explain.”

“A chair bolted to the floor. Leather straps. Medical supplies. A camera.”

Daniel felt sick.

“And blood?”

“Small amount. We are testing it.”

Claire entered the room before Torres could continue.

She had heard enough from the hallway.

“You said medical supplies.”

Daniel turned.

“Claire.”

“What kind?”

Torres offered her a chair.

Claire remained standing.

“What kind of medical supplies?”

“Sedatives. Intravenous tubing. Needles. Monitoring equipment.”

Claire’s face went pale.

She touched the inside of her elbow.

Daniel saw the motion.

“What?”

Claire looked at him.

“I woke up there once.”

Silence filled the room.

Daniel moved closer.

“What are you talking about?”

“I didn’t know it was there.”

She pressed both hands against her temples.

“Three months ago. You were in New York. I remember having dinner. Ruth made tea. I went upstairs. Then.”

She stopped.

“Then what?”

“I woke up somewhere dark.”

Daniel stared at her.

“You never told me.”

“I thought it was a dream.”

Torres asked, “What did you see?”

Claire closed her eyes.

“A light above me. White. Very bright. I couldn’t move my arms.”

Daniel whispered, “Claire.”

“I heard someone talking.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

Torres leaned forward.

“What did they say?”

Claire’s face tightened.

“One man said, not yet.”

The room became completely still.

“Anything else?”

“Yes.”

Claire looked toward Daniel.

“Another voice said, she only needs to remember what we give her.”

Daniel’s skin prickled.

Torres wrote something down.

“Did you have any unusual symptoms after that night?”

“Headache. Nausea. Missing time.”

“How much?”

“I went to sleep around nine. When I woke up it was almost noon the next day.”

Daniel turned away.

He remembered that morning.

Claire had joked that she must have been exhausted.

He had believed her.

Why wouldn’t he?

This was their house.

Their staff.

Their security.

Their life.

Torres asked, “Who had access to the property?”

Daniel answered automatically.

“Family. Staff. Security.”

“Who controls the security system?”

“I do.”

“Anyone else?”

“My office has emergency access.”

“Who at your office?”

Daniel paused.

“My chief operating officer.”

“Name?”

“Adrian Cole.”

Claire looked at him sharply.

Adrian had been Daniel’s closest friend since university.

He had served as best man at their wedding.

He was godfather to Caleb.

When Noah was born prematurely, Adrian had spent two nights sitting in the hospital waiting room.

Torres noticed Claire’s reaction.

“You trust him?”

Daniel replied, “Completely.”

Torres did not comment.

At midnight, the Whitmores were moved to a hotel under police protection.

Daniel had wanted a private residence.

Torres refused.

“If someone compromised your home, I don’t want you going anywhere predictable.”

They were placed in adjoining rooms registered under false names.

Caleb slept between Daniel and Claire.

Noah slept in a crib brought by hotel staff.

Claire remained awake.

Daniel knew because each time he opened his eyes, she was staring at the ceiling.

At three twelve in the morning, Caleb whispered.

“Dad.”

Daniel turned.

“What is it?”

“Was Miss Ruth bad?”

Daniel looked toward Claire.

She was listening.

“I don’t know yet.”

“She told us not to scream.”

“When?”

“Before she threw us.”

Daniel sat up.

“What exactly did she say?”

Caleb rubbed his eyes.

“She said Daddy will catch you.”

Daniel felt cold.

“Are you sure?”

Caleb nodded.

“She said Daddy is coming through the big doors. She said trust me.”

Claire pushed herself upright.

“What?”

Caleb looked frightened.

“I thought you knew.”

Daniel replayed the event.

Ruth had dragged the children toward the railing.

The front doors were below.

From that height, she could see the driveway through the glass panels.

She might have seen Daniel’s car.

She might have known exactly where he would enter.

But it was madness.

No one could guarantee a catch.

Unless the alternative was worse.

Daniel asked, “Did she say anything else?”

Caleb hesitated.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“She said if the man gets us, he’ll make Mommy forget us.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Daniel climbed from the bed.

“I’m calling Torres.”

Before he reached his phone, it rang.

Unknown number.

Daniel stared at the screen.

Claire whispered, “Don’t.”

He answered.

No one spoke.

Daniel could hear breathing.

Then a man said quietly, “You still catch with your left side first.”

Daniel froze.

It was a voice he had not heard since he was nineteen.

Older.

Rougher.

But unmistakable.

“Peter.”

Claire sat motionless.

The caller laughed softly.

“You always were fast, little brother.”

“Where are you?”

“Close enough.”

“You tried to take my children.”

“No, Daniel. I tried to take back what belongs to me.”

“They are my sons.”

“I wasn’t talking about them.”

The call ended.

A message arrived immediately.

A photograph.

Daniel opened it.

The image showed his father, Charles Whitmore, standing beside Peter on a dock.

The photograph appeared to have been taken shortly before Peter disappeared.

On the back of the printed photograph someone had written a date.

And underneath it, one sentence.

Daniel read the sentence twice.

Then Claire took the phone from his hand.
