Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Photograph

Security officers entered the eastern wing from three directions.

Claire remained in the entrance hall with Oliver and Lily while Agent Shaw checked the security feeds.

The cameras outside the nursery had stopped recording fourteen minutes earlier.

Margaret stood beside the ballroom doors, furious that investigators had confiscated her phone.

“This is my home,” she repeated.

Nobody corrected her.

Daniel paced near the staircase, making calls that did not connect. His corporate accounts had been frozen. His personal attorney had refused to speak without reviewing the trust documents. Even the head of mansion security now took orders from Claire.

The shift in power had happened so quickly that Daniel seemed unable to understand it.

Claire did not feel powerful.

She felt as though the floor beneath her life had disappeared.

Samuel stood beside her, watching the staircase.

“Tell me the truth about my mother,” Claire said.

“This is not the place.”

“You have had twenty-nine years to find a place.”

He lowered his eyes.

“Your mother’s name was Helena Bennett. She was the only child of Eleanor Bennett’s grandson, Thomas.”

“I know her name.”

“You do not know who she became.”

Before he could continue, a security officer called from upstairs.

“The nursery is clear.”

Claire climbed the staircase with Agent Shaw and Samuel. Daniel attempted to follow, but the officer blocked him.

“That is my daughter’s room,” Daniel protested.

“It is evidence,” Agent Shaw replied.

The nursery door had been forced open.

The cradle had been moved. Drawers were overturned. Clothing and blankets covered the floor.

The black envelope was gone.

Claire checked beneath the wardrobe.

The brass panel stood open.

“They knew exactly where to look.”

Agent Shaw photographed the room.

“Who knew you found it?”

“My son, Vanessa, and whoever was outside the door.”

Samuel crouched beside the hidden compartment.

“This was not designed for an envelope.”

He pressed two fingers against the rear wall.

A section clicked inward.

Behind it was a narrow slot containing a roll of microfilm and a silver locket.

Claire opened the locket.

Inside was a photograph of Helena holding a newborn baby.

On the opposite side were two tiny portraits.

One was Claire.

The other showed a baby boy.

“Who is he?”

Samuel’s eyes filled with tears.

“Your brother.”

Claire nearly dropped the locket.

“I never had a brother.”

“You had a twin.”

Agent Shaw stopped photographing.

“What was his name?”

“Gabriel.”

Claire stared at the unknown child.

“What happened to him?”

Samuel stood slowly.

“The Hawthornes took him.”

Richard’s voice came from the doorway.

“No. Helena gave him to us.”

Everyone turned.

Agent Shaw reached for her weapon, but Richard raised both hands.

“I came to talk.”

Samuel moved toward him.

“You bought a frightened woman’s silence and called it consent.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“Helena understood the danger. Two Bennett heirs would have divided the trust and exposed both children.”

“So you erased one?”

“We protected him.”

Claire stepped between them.

“Where is my brother?”

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

“I do not know.”

“You raised him.”

“For seven years.”

The words struck Claire like cold water.

Richard explained that Gabriel had lived under another name in a private residence owned by the Hawthorne Foundation. Helena visited him secretly. When Gabriel was seven, the residence burned.

No body was found.

Helena disappeared three days later.

Samuel believed the Hawthornes had killed them both.

Richard insisted Helena had taken the boy and fled.

“Why tell me she was dead?” Claire asked Samuel.

“Because two men came to my workshop,” Samuel said. “They showed me photographs of you walking to school. They said that if I searched for Helena, you would disappear too.”

Richard looked genuinely shocked.

“I never authorized that.”

Samuel laughed bitterly.

“You never controlled the people behind your family.”

Agent Shaw examined the microfilm.

“We need equipment to read this.”

Richard’s gaze fixed on the silver locket.

“Helena wore that the night she vanished.”

A security officer entered.

“We found the person who searched the nursery.”

Vanessa was brought into the room.

Her silver dress was torn at the shoulder. Dust covered her hands.

Claire stared at her.

“Where is the envelope?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I did not take it.”

Agent Shaw held up a black thread found beneath Vanessa’s fingernail.

“You were in this room.”

“Yes,” Vanessa whispered. “But someone was already here.”

“Who?”

Vanessa looked toward Richard.

“I do not know his name.”

She reached into her dress and removed a small recording device.

“He told me to give him the envelope or he would release this.”

Agent Shaw pressed play.

A woman’s voice filled the nursery.

Margaret’s voice.

“Daniel must never learn Claire’s first child survived.”

Claire stopped breathing.

May you like

Oliver was her first child.

Unless there had been another.
