Chapter 2 - The Blanket on the Marble Steps

Claire slipped the photograph into Lily’s diaper bag.

She hid the brass key inside her dress and placed the black envelope beneath a stack of blankets in the nursery closet.

When she opened the door, Vanessa was standing in the hallway.

Daniel’s sister wore a silver gown covered in crystals. Her eyes moved from Claire’s face to the displaced cradle.

“What were you doing?”

“Putting Lily to sleep.”

Vanessa leaned toward the room.

“The cradle was against the wall this morning.”

Claire adjusted the baby in her arms.

“Oliver moved it.”

Vanessa looked down at the three-year-old.

“Did you?”

Oliver pressed himself against Claire’s leg.

Claire stepped into the hallway and shut the door.

“The guests are waiting.”

Vanessa smiled, but the suspicion remained in her eyes.

The reception filled the mansion with politicians, investors, celebrities, and journalists. Crystal chandeliers glowed above the ballroom. A string quartet performed beside the marble staircase. Champagne flowed beneath a portrait of Margaret painted to make her appear twenty years younger.

Claire stayed near the edge of the room with Lily and Oliver.

Every few minutes, she touched the key hidden inside her dress.

Samuel had never mentioned Richard Hawthorne.

He had never told Claire that her mother had stood inside the mansion.

More disturbing was the sentence on the photograph.

The mansion belongs to her daughter.

Shortly after nine, Margaret approached with several guests.

“You wore white,” Margaret said.

Claire looked down at her cream-colored dress.

“It’s ivory.”

“My gown is ivory.”

A senator’s wife laughed uncertainly.

Claire tried to walk away, but Margaret blocked her.

“Daniel tells me you refused to participate in the foundation photographs.”

“Lily was feeding.”

“Women have managed babies without turning motherhood into a public performance for centuries.”

Oliver gripped Claire’s dress.

“Grandma, stop.”

The room became quiet.

Margaret stared at the child.

“What did you say?”

Oliver’s lower lip trembled, but he did not hide.

“Stop making Mommy sad.”

Vanessa laughed loudly.

“How dramatic. He sounds exactly like her.”

Daniel appeared from the crowd.

“What happened?”

“Your wife is using your son to insult me at my own celebration,” Margaret said.

Claire stared at him.

“That isn’t what happened.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“Claire, take the children upstairs.”

The order was spoken quietly, but everyone heard it.

She felt dozens of eyes on her.

“I was already trying to leave.”

Margaret reached for Lily.

“Give me the baby first. The photographer needs a family portrait.”

“She’s tired.”

“You are always using that child as an excuse.”

Margaret grabbed the edge of Lily’s blanket.

Claire held tighter.

“Let go.”

Margaret pulled hard.

The blanket came free and fell onto the marble floor.

Lily began screaming.

Something inside Claire went still.

She bent to pick up the blanket, but Daniel seized her arm.

“Apologize to my mother.”

Claire looked at his hand.

“You’re hurting me.”

“Then stop creating scenes.”

Margaret pointed toward the staircase.

“Kneel and apologize properly.”

Several guests turned away in embarrassment.

Others watched eagerly.

Claire looked from Margaret to Daniel.

She understood then that no apology would end this. Submission did not satisfy people like Margaret. It only taught them how far they could go next time.

“No.”

Daniel’s grip tightened.

“What did you say?”

“I said no.”

Vanessa gave a mocking laugh.

“Look at her pretending she has dignity.”

Margaret’s expression hardened.

“Get out.”

Daniel released Claire’s arm.

For one brief second, she thought he might oppose his mother.

Instead, he said, “Perhaps that’s best.”

Claire stared at him.

“You are throwing your wife and children out at night?”

“You need to learn that actions have consequences.”

Lily cried against her chest.

Oliver began crying too.

Margaret pointed toward the entrance.

“You came into this family with nothing. You will leave with nothing.”

Claire picked up the dirty blanket and wrapped it around Lily.

She walked toward the doors.

Daniel followed her onto the marble steps.

“Do not take one of the family cars,” he warned.

Claire continued toward the black Porsche parked beneath the lights.

Vanessa laughed behind her.

“She cannot even afford the tires.”

Claire reached into the diaper bag and removed a key.

The Porsche unlocked.

Silence spread across the entrance.

Margaret rushed down the stairs and slammed her hands against the hood.

“Get away from my son’s car!”

Claire met her gaze.

“Your son’s?”

Then Daniel’s phone rang.

The attorney’s voice came through the speaker.

And the first piece of the Hawthorne family’s world broke apart.
