Chapter 15 - The Name Beneath Claire’s Own

Alexander asked Claire to meet him in the original nursery.
The room had been preserved while the rest of the mansion was renovated. Lily’s antique cradle remained beside the wall. The hidden brass compartment beneath the floor stood open.
Helena, Gabriel, Samuel, Agent Shaw, and Vanessa joined them.
Gabriel’s children were recovering well, but Gabriel himself remained difficult to read. He assisted investigators while refusing to reveal everything he knew about the Vale Society’s surviving members.
Alexander placed a sealed file on the table.
“This was recovered from a secondary chamber beneath Meridian House.”
“I thought the island archive flooded,” Claire said.
“Most of it did. One chamber was protected.”
He opened the file.
Inside was the complete biological registry.
The pages listed generations of Bennett descendants, including hidden births, altered identities, and children assigned to Society families.
Claire found her own name.
Claire Eleanor Bennett.
Below it appeared Gabriel’s and Vanessa’s names.
But another name was listed between Gabriel and Vanessa.
A fourth child.
Female.
Status unknown.
Claire looked at Helena.
“You had another daughter?”
Helena shook her head.
“I gave birth to three children.”
“The registry says four.”
Gabriel took the page.
“This entry was added two years after our birth.”
Agent Shaw examined the code beside the name.
“It may not indicate a biological sibling. It could indicate a legal insertion.”
The fourth child’s name had been heavily redacted.
Only the initials remained.
M. H.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
“Margaret Hawthorne?”
“No,” Samuel said. “She was born before Helena.”
Alexander turned the page.
A photograph was clipped beneath the registry.
It showed Helena leaving a hospital twenty-seven years earlier.
A young girl walked beside her.
The child appeared to be about two.
On the back was a sentence written in Eleanor Bennett’s trust code.
The first daughter was hidden.
The second daughter was displayed.
The third daughter was raised by the enemy.
The fourth daughter became the enemy.
Claire read the sentence twice.
“Which one am I?”
Nobody answered.
Agent Shaw’s phone vibrated.
She stepped into the hallway, then returned with a grave expression.
“Margaret Hawthorne was attacked during transport to a federal medical facility.”
Vanessa went pale.
“Is she alive?”
“Yes. The driver and two officers are dead. Margaret is missing.”
A cold silence filled the nursery.
Claire looked at the initials again.
M. H.
“That is impossible.”
Helena sat beside the cradle.
“There is something I never told you.”
Gabriel’s expression hardened.
“You said there would be no more secrets.”
Helena looked at Claire.
“After your births, the doctor told me one infant had died. I believed he meant Vanessa because I did not know Margaret had taken her. Years later, I learned the dead infant had been recorded under a different mother’s name.”
“Whose name?”
“Margaret’s.”
Claire felt the room contract around her.
Alexander placed a second photograph on the table.
Margaret stood outside the hospital holding a newborn baby.
The date was two weeks after Vanessa’s birth.
Daniel appeared in the background as a young child.
Richard stood beside him.
The baby’s face was hidden.
Vanessa whispered, “Who was she holding?”
Helena answered.
“I do not know.”
The lights flickered.
The nursery door closed by itself.
The old intercom system crackled.
A woman began humming a lullaby.
Claire recognized it.
Samuel used to hum the same melody while repairing clocks in his workshop.
Agent Shaw drew her weapon.
“Who is controlling the system?”
The monitor above the nursery fireplace turned on.
A live image appeared.
Margaret sat inside a dark room.
A bandage covered one side of her face.
Beside her stood a woman in a black coat.
The woman’s face remained outside the camera frame.
Margaret smiled.
“Claire, you turned my mansion into a shelter.”
Claire stepped toward the screen.
“Where are you?”
“You believed the trial ended our story. It only removed the people who had become inconvenient.”
“Who is with you?”
Margaret looked toward the woman.
“She is the reason your mother ran.”
Helena rose slowly.
The unknown woman placed her hand on Margaret’s shoulder.
A ring gleamed on her finger.
It did not show the divided crown.
It showed the crown restored.
Gabriel backed away from the screen.
“No.”
Claire looked at him.
“You recognize it.”
Gabriel’s face had lost all color.
“The divided crown belongs to the Society factions. The whole crown belongs to its founder.”
“Eleanor Bennett died decades ago.”
“That is what the Hawthornes were ordered to tell everyone.”
The woman beside Margaret stepped partially into view.
Silver hair framed the lower half of her face.
Around her neck hung a locket identical to Helena’s.
She spoke directly to Claire.
“You reclaimed my house.”
Her voice was calm, elegant, and terrifyingly familiar.
“Now let us see whether you are worthy of the rest of my inheritance.”
The screen went black.
At the same moment, the hidden compartment beneath the cradle opened by itself.
A new envelope rose from inside.
Claire lifted it carefully.
Her name was written across the front.
Beneath her name was another line.
To the granddaughter who was never supposed to exist.
Inside was a single key and a map of Europe marked with thirteen properties.
One location had been circled in red.
A castle in northern Switzerland.
Beside it were four words.
YOUR DAUGHTER HAS BEEN HERE.
Claire looked toward Lily’s empty cradle.
Her heart stopped.
She ran into the hallway.
Music and laughter continued in the garden below.
Oliver and Noah were still playing near the fountain.
Vanessa stood beside Helena.
Samuel called Claire’s name.
But Lily was no longer in Helena’s arms.
On the marble floor lay the baby’s pale blanket.
The same blanket Margaret had thrown into the mud nine months earlier.
Claire picked it up.
Something had been pinned beneath the embroidered edge.
A first-class airline ticket departing in three hours.
The passenger name was Lily Eleanor Bennett.
Behind Claire, the mansion’s ancient clock began striking midnight.
May you like
Thirteen times.
CUT TO BLACK.
