Chapter 9 - the slap beneath the chandeliers

The wedding began at six in the evening.
Margaret arrived wearing the floral dress Ethan had given her for her seventieth birthday. She carried the bouquet of red roses in both hands.
At the entrance, a guard tried to direct her toward a side corridor.
Ethan’s security director intervened.
“Mrs. Vale enters through the main ballroom.”
The guard lowered his eyes and stepped aside.
Inside, guests filled rows of gold chairs. White roses covered every column. Chandeliers cast warm light over the marble floor.
Serena stood in a private room behind the ballroom doors.
Celeste adjusted her veil.
“Margaret is here.”
Serena’s hands tightened around her bouquet.
“Did she bring the red flowers?”
“Yes.”
“Why does that matter?”
Celeste looked toward Oliver.
He stood near the door wearing the thorn pin.
“It means she remembers more than we expected,” he said.
Serena stared at him.
“Remembers what?”
Oliver ignored the question.
Celeste placed both hands on Serena’s shoulders.
“You know what to do.”
“Make her lose control.”
“Before the vows.”
“What if Ethan sees?”
“He will see an unstable woman attacking his bride.”
Serena looked at the mirror.
“And if she doesn’t attack me?”
Celeste’s voice became cold.
“Then provoke her.”
The orchestra began.
Guests rose.
Serena walked down the aisle toward Ethan, who watched her with an expression she could no longer read.
To the guests, he appeared calm.
Only Margaret knew that he had not slept.
The ceremony began.
After the opening remarks, the officiant announced a brief family blessing. It was not part of the original schedule.
Celeste had added it that afternoon.
Margaret’s name was called.
She stepped into the aisle carrying the red roses.
Nora raised her phone from the third row.
Hidden microphones activated.
Margaret approached Serena.
For a moment, the two women faced each other beneath the chandeliers.
“These are for you, dear,” Margaret said.
Serena looked down at the flowers.
A red petal touched the front of her gown.
She recoiled.
“Don’t.”
Margaret stopped.
“I only wanted to welcome you.”
Serena glanced toward Celeste.
Celeste gave the smallest nod.
Serena slapped Margaret.
The sound silenced the orchestra.
Margaret staggered.
Red roses fell around her feet.
Then Ethan moved.
Everything happened exactly as the conspirators had planned, but not in the way they expected.
Ethan did not defend the bride.
He held his mother.
He demanded the truth.
And when Serena called Margaret a pathetic old woman, he ended the wedding in front of everyone.
Celeste tried to turn the guests against him.
She spoke of contracts, reputation, and family destruction.
Then Nora raised her phone.
The recording played.
Serena’s voice filled the ballroom.
Celeste’s instructions followed.
Then the unknown man said Margaret must be discredited before she recognized the signature.
Margaret dropped the bouquet.
“What signature?” Ethan asked.
Before Nora could play more, the chandeliers went dark.
Guests screamed.
Someone struck Nora’s hand.
Her phone disappeared.
Security lights flashed on seconds later.
Serena stood near the altar, pale and terrified.
Celeste was gone.
Oliver was gone.
And Margaret was no longer beside Ethan.
He saw the side door swinging shut.
“Mom!”
Ethan ran across the ballroom.
Behind the door, a service corridor stretched toward the loading entrance.
A red rose lay on the floor.
Then another.
Then another.
Ethan followed the trail to an old freight elevator.
The doors were closing.
Inside stood Margaret.
A gloved hand covered her mouth.
Oliver watched Ethan through the narrowing gap.

With his free hand, he removed the thorn pin from his lapel and let it fall.
The elevator doors closed.
