Chapter 10 - the groom who followed the roses

Ethan reached the elevator too late.
He struck the call button repeatedly, but the display did not move.
The security system had been disabled.
Adrian and Nora reached him moments later.
“They took my phone,” Nora said.
“Did it upload?”
“Yes. The recording is backed up.”
Ethan looked at the rose petals on the floor.
“Oliver has my mother.”
The security director arrived with two guards.
“The loading exits are locked.”
“Then open them.”
“We’ve lost control of the west system.”
Ethan picked up the thorn pin.
The back contained a tiny electronic strip.
Nora examined it.
“It’s not jewelry. It’s an access key.”
Adrian looked toward the freight elevator.
“There’s an old private level beneath the hotel.”
Ethan turned.
“What private level?”
“The Whitmores sealed it after the renovation. It used to connect the ballroom to the original bank vault.”
“Why would a hotel have a bank vault?”
“Because this building was Vale Trust headquarters before your grandfather sold it.”
The elevator display suddenly lit.
B2.
Ethan forced open the stairwell door and ran downward.
At the second basement level, the corridor smelled of dust and cold stone. Emergency lights flickered along the walls.
Red petals marked the floor.
Margaret had been dropping them deliberately.
The trail ended at a steel door bearing the same thorn symbol.
Nora held the pin against the lock.
It opened.
Beyond it lay a circular room lined with old deposit boxes. Margaret sat in a chair near the center. Her hands were tied, but she was conscious.
Oliver stood behind her.
Celeste was beside a metal table covered with documents.
Serena entered through another doorway.
Her veil was gone.
“Mother,” she whispered. “What are you doing?”
Celeste stared at her.
“You were told to remain upstairs.”
“The guests are calling the police.”
“Then we have less time.”
Ethan stepped into the room.
“Let her go.”
Oliver held a small remote.
“The door behind you is wired to lock.”
“Lock it.”
Nora and Adrian entered before the steel door closed.
Celeste looked furious.
“You have no idea what you are interfering with.”
Ethan’s eyes remained on Margaret.
“Are you hurt?”
“I’m fine.”
Oliver pulled the gag from her mouth.
Margaret looked at Serena.
“Did you know they would take me?”
Serena shook her head.
“No.”
Celeste slapped the metal table with her palm.
“Enough. Serena, bring Ethan the continuity certificate.”
Serena did not move.
“You said we only needed Margaret removed from the ballroom.”
“I said what you needed to hear.”
Ethan looked at the documents.
One was the forged certificate.
Another was the hotel sale authorization.
A third contained a transfer of Vale voting shares.
“My signature is on that,” Ethan said.
Oliver smiled.
“You sign more documents than you remember.”
“Not this one.”
“Memory becomes flexible under pressure.”
Margaret studied the signature.
“It isn’t Ethan’s.”
Celeste leaned toward her.
“Sign the certificate and this ends.”
“No.”
“You do not understand what is at stake.”
“I understand enough.”
Celeste picked up a photograph and placed it before Margaret.
Richard Vale stood outside a stone building beside a man whose face had been cut away.
A date had been written on the back.
It was six months after Richard’s supposed death.
Margaret’s breath caught.
“Where did you get this?”
“Sign.”
Ethan stepped closer.
“Mom, don’t.”
Celeste smiled.
“She will. She has waited twenty years for one answer.”
Margaret stared at Richard’s face.
Then she tore the photograph in half.
Celeste’s smile disappeared.
“My husband would never ask me to betray our son.”
Oliver lifted the remote.
“Perhaps he is no longer the man you remember.”
Nora’s phone rang from inside Oliver’s coat.
Everyone froze.
Oliver had forgotten to silence the stolen device.
Nora smiled.
“That’s my upload confirmation.”
Police sirens sounded above them.
Oliver pressed the remote.
Nothing happened.
Adrian held up the thorn pin.
“You need this to control the locks.”
Ethan crossed the room and untied Margaret.
Celeste backed toward the second door.
Serena blocked her path.
“No.”
Celeste stared at her daughter.
“Move.”
“You used me.”
“I saved you.”
“You told me I would be protecting our family.”
“You were.”
Serena looked at Ethan, then at Margaret.
For the first time, shame replaced anger.
“I didn’t know about the medication.”
Margaret said nothing.
“I didn’t know they would take you,” Serena continued. “I swear.”
Celeste shoved her aside and ran through the second door.
Oliver followed.
Ethan moved after them, but Margaret caught his arm.
“Let security take them.”
A mechanical sound came from behind the walls.
The deposit boxes began unlocking one after another.
At the far end of the room, a hidden door opened.
Inside was a single blue envelope.

Across the front, written in Richard’s handwriting, were the words:
FOR ETHAN, AFTER HIS WEDDING.
