Chapter 7 - the guest who started recording

Nora had not intended to spy.

She was at the hotel because Ethan had asked her to photograph several family heirlooms for the wedding display. As a documentary filmmaker, she carried recording equipment almost everywhere.

When Serena entered the ballroom, Nora had been adjusting a microphone behind the flower wall.

She heard Ethan’s questions.

She heard Serena’s lies.

Then she heard the call.

Nora remained hidden until Serena left.

She removed the memory card from her recorder and placed it inside her shoe.

Then she called Ethan.

He did not answer.

She called Margaret.

The line connected, but no one spoke.

Instead, Nora heard breathing.

Then a man’s voice said, “Mrs. Vale is unavailable.”

The call ended.

Nora left the ballroom and drove to Margaret’s house.

The front door was open.

A teacup lay broken in the hallway.

“Margaret?”

No answer.

Nora searched the ground floor, then the garden.

She found Margaret sitting inside the greenhouse with bloodless lips and shaking hands. An empty medication bottle lay beside her.

Nora knelt.

“Are you hurt?”

Margaret shook her head.

“My heart pills.”

“What happened?”

“Someone replaced them.”

Nora lifted the bottle.

The label carried Margaret’s name, but the tablets inside were ordinary vitamins.

“Did you take any?”

“One this morning. I felt weak afterward, but I thought I was tired.”

Nora called emergency services.

At the hospital, doctors confirmed that Margaret had suffered a mild cardiac episode worsened by missing her prescribed medication. She was stable, but she needed observation.

Ethan arrived twenty minutes later.

When he saw his mother in the hospital bed, he stopped at the door.

Margaret tried to smile.

“I’m all right.”

“Who did this?”

“We don’t know.”

Nora handed him the bottle.

“Someone switched her medication.”

Ethan looked at the label.

“Serena was in the house last month.”

Margaret shook her head.

“We cannot accuse her without proof.”

“I’m past giving her the benefit of the doubt.”

Nora closed the hospital door.

“I recorded something.”

She played the conversation from the ballroom.

When Ethan heard Serena call Celeste, his jaw tightened.

When the unknown man spoke, Margaret sat upright.

“Play that again.”

Nora replayed the final sentence.

Then you will create one.

Margaret listened three times.

“Do you recognize him?” Ethan asked.

“No.”

But she looked away.

Nora noticed.

“You know something.”

Margaret’s fingers tightened around the blanket.

“The voice is changed. Older. Colder.”

“That doesn’t answer the question,” Ethan said.

Margaret closed her eyes.

“There is a rhythm in the way he speaks. Richard used to pause before the final word of a sentence.”

Ethan stared at her.

“You think that man is Dad?”

“No. Richard is dead.”

“You never believed that.”

“I believed he would have come home if he were alive.”

Nora placed the recorder on the bedside table.

“The man might be imitating him.”

“Why?” Ethan asked.

“To frighten your mother.”

Margaret looked at the medication bottle.

“If they wanted only to frighten me, they would not have replaced my pills.”

Ethan stood.

“The wedding is canceled.”

Margaret reached for his hand.

“Not yet.”

He looked at her as though she had lost her mind.

“You almost died.”

“And if you cancel now, they disappear with every answer.”

“You want me to walk into a ceremony with a woman who may have helped do this?”

“I want them to believe their plan is still working.”

Nora understood first.

“You want to trap them at the wedding.”

Margaret nodded.

Ethan stepped away from the bed.

“No.”

“Ethan.”

“I will not use you as bait.”

“I am already the bait.”

Margaret looked toward the rain falling beyond the hospital window.

“They have been moving me toward that ballroom from the beginning. The service entrance, the fake emails, the missing invitations, the forged signature. They need me there, frightened and discredited.”

“Then you stay away.”

“If I stay away, they forge whatever they need and claim I approved it.”

Adrian entered with a sealed evidence bag.

Inside it was a white rose found beside Margaret’s real medication in a trash container near the hotel.

“There’s more,” he said.

He placed a hotel access report on the table.

The electronic key used to enter Margaret’s house belonged to Serena’s bridal suite.

Ethan looked at his mother.

May you like

The wedding was no longer a celebration.

It had become the only place where all the people hunting Margaret would gather at once.
