Chapter 6 - What Claire Found in the Nursery)

Lily stopped sleeping alone after the party.

For four nights she woke screaming.

"Balloons no."

Claire would carry her into the main bedroom.

Daniel would turn on the bedside lamp.

They would lie on either side of her until she fell asleep between them.

On the fifth night Lily did not scream.

She whispered.

"Gray lady."

Claire opened her eyes.

"What did you say, sweetheart?"

Lily pointed toward the dark hallway.

"Gray lady said hold."

Claire sat up.

Daniel was still asleep.

"What gray lady?"

"Grandma house."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"Lily, did the gray lady give you the balloons?"

Lily nodded.

"What did she say?"

Lily pulled the blanket to her chin.

"Hold tight."

Claire felt sick.

"Anything else?"

Lily thought.

"Grandma watching."

Claire closed her eyes.

Children Lily's age could mix memory and suggestion.

Claire knew that professionally.

She also knew not to interrogate.

She kissed Lily's forehead.

"You're safe."

The next morning she told Daniel.

He stared into his coffee.

"I keep trying to find some version of this where my mother isn't responsible."

Claire sat across from him.

"Margaret tied the balloons."

"My mother watched."

"We still don't know why."

"I do."

Claire waited.

Daniel looked exhausted.

"Because she thought Lily needed punishment."

"That's enough to walk away."

"I know."

"But it isn't enough to explain Margaret."

Daniel nodded.

He had tried calling Margaret six times.

No answer.

Her office said she was on personal leave.

Her apartment appeared empty.

Victor Hale remained unreachable.

Noah had spoken to police and turned over copies of the videos.

The black sedan disappeared after he left.

Then something else happened.

The Mercer Foundation board announced an emergency review of Daniel's conduct at the garden party.

Claire read the statement on her phone.

"They're investigating you for slapping Evelyn."

"I expected that."

"They make no mention of what happened to Lily."

"I expected that too."

Claire threw the phone onto the couch.

"This family is unbelievable."

Daniel looked toward the staircase.

"Our family is upstairs."

Claire looked at him.

He continued.

"My mother is blood. That's all."

The sentence eased something inside Claire.

Then the doorbell rang.

A courier handed Daniel a large envelope.

Inside were legal documents.

Evelyn had amended the family trust.

Daniel was removed as successor trustee.

His access to multiple Mercer accounts was suspended.

A clause stated that assets intended for Lily would be placed under independent management until her twenty fifth birthday.

The independent manager was Evelyn Mercer.

Claire laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

"She wants control over our daughter until she's twenty five."

Daniel scanned the pages.

"She can't do this."

"Apparently she thinks she can."

A second document fell from the envelope.

A handwritten note.

Family requires obedience before inheritance.

Claire stared.

"That's your mother's handwriting?"

"Yes."

Something changed in Daniel then.

Not anger.

Clarity.

He walked upstairs.

Claire followed.

He entered Lily's nursery and began removing every gift Evelyn had ever given her.

Designer clothes.

Silver bracelet.

Expensive stuffed animals.

A music box.

Claire watched.

"What are you doing?"

"I'm done letting her buy a place in Lily's life."

Daniel lifted the music box.

A small object rattled inside.

He frowned.

"Did this always make that sound?"

Claire shook her head.

Daniel opened the bottom panel.

Inside was a tiny black device.

They both stared.

Claire whispered, "What is that?"

Daniel did not touch it.

He took a photograph.

Then searched the model number printed along the side.

The result appeared instantly.

Wi Fi audio transmitter.

Claire backed away.

"No."

Daniel's face went white.

The music box had arrived shortly after Lily's first birthday.

It had sat in the nursery for more than a year.

Beside the crib.

Beside the rocking chair.

Beside the place where Claire and Daniel discussed money, arguments, family plans and private fears.

Claire covered her mouth.

"She's been listening to us."

Daniel called the police.

This time, no one could dismiss what he said as a family argument.

Two detectives arrived within an hour.

They photographed the device.

Collected the music box.

Asked questions.

One detective, a woman named Sofia Ramirez, listened without interruption.

"When did Mrs. Mercer give you this?"

"Fourteen months ago."

"Did anyone else have access to the house?"

"Family employees occasionally."

"Margaret?"

Daniel nodded.

"Yes."

Detective Ramirez wrote something.

"Do you know where Ms. Sloan is?"

"No."

"Neither do we."

Daniel looked up.

"What does that mean?"

"She didn't report to work Monday. Her cell phone was disconnected Tuesday."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Is she missing?"

"We haven't classified her that way."

"Why not?"

"Because no one has filed a report."

Daniel stared.

"She has worked for my mother almost thirty years."

Ramirez closed her notebook.

"Then perhaps your mother should be concerned."

The detective left.

That evening Daniel checked every room in the house.

No other devices.

At midnight Claire entered Lily's nursery alone.

The room felt different now.

Invaded.

She sat in the rocking chair.

The music box was gone, leaving a pale square on the shelf where dust had never reached.

Claire looked down.

Something glimmered beneath the chair.

She bent and picked it up.

A tiny piece of folded paper.

She almost threw it away.

Then she recognized the handwriting.

Margaret's.

Claire unfolded it.

Three words.

Check the rabbit.

Claire looked toward Lily's crib.

The stuffed rabbit sat against the pillow.

The same rabbit Lily carried everywhere.

The same rabbit Evelyn had given her at Christmas.

Claire lifted it.

The seam along the back had been cut and carefully resewn.

Inside was a memory card.

And on that card was a recording made three weeks before the garden party.

Evelyn's voice was unmistakable.

"If Daniel refuses the trust amendment, use the child. Claire will panic. Daniel will come running back."

Margaret's voice answered.

"What exactly are you asking me to do?"

Evelyn replied.

"Nothing permanent."

A pause.

May you like

Then four colder words.

"Just teach them fear."
