Chapter 10 - The Son Evelyn Chose)

Evelyn Mercer had not always been wealthy.

She had been born Evelyn Price in a small industrial town.

Her father disappeared when she was nine.

Her mother worked in a laundry until illness made it impossible.

Evelyn learned early that poverty could make adults invisible.

She decided she would never be invisible.

At twenty four she married Richard Mercer.

Richard already owned part of a small manufacturing company with Thomas Hartwell.

Within ten years the company expanded rapidly.

Richard understood engineering.

Thomas understood sales.

Evelyn understood leverage.

Together they became rich.

Then Daniel and David were born.

According to Victor, the twins were identical enough that even relatives confused them as infants.

But their personalities separated quickly.

Daniel was cautious.

David was fearless.

Daniel loved books.

David climbed trees.

Daniel wanted his mother's approval.

David challenged her.

Evelyn favored Daniel.

Not subtly.

Not accidentally.

Daniel followed rules.

David questioned them.

By age six, everyone in the household knew which child Evelyn considered worthy of the Mercer name.

Claire listened in horror as Victor explained.

"Richard hated it."

"What did he do?"

"He tried to intervene."

"Why don't I remember?"

"You were children."

Daniel looked at the photo.

Victor continued.

"Then Thomas discovered something in the company books."

"The Hartwell shares?"

"More than that."

Evelyn had moved portions of both families' voting shares into temporary holding companies.

Richard and Thomas approved the change because she claimed it would reduce tax liability.

Instead, documents were altered.

Signatures were replaced.

Ownership shifted.

By the time Thomas understood, Evelyn effectively controlled the company.

He threatened legal action.

Three weeks later Thomas died in a car accident.

"No," Daniel said.

Victor looked at him.

"You think she killed him."

"I think your father thought she did."

Claire asked, "And Rebecca?"

"She was eighteen."

"She became Margaret."

Victor nodded.

"Richard helped her."

Daniel stared.

"My father hid her inside the company?"

"He created the identity. Margaret Sloan had paperwork, education records, employment history. Everything."

"Why?"

"Because Rebecca wanted proof."

Claire understood.

"She spent twenty nine years collecting it."

Victor nodded.

Daniel looked away.

"And David?"

"That summer Richard told Evelyn he planned to leave."

"Divorce?"

"Yes. He intended to take both boys."

Victor paused.

"Three days later David went into the lake."

Daniel's breathing changed.

"What happened?"

"No one knows except the people who were there."

"Who was there?"

"Richard. Evelyn. Rebecca. You. David."

"Rebecca was there?"

"Yes."

Daniel remembered a young girl kneeling near the water.

Dark hair.

Crying.

Victor continued.

"Your mother said David ran onto the dock, slipped and drowned."

"But Dad said he survived."

"Richard brought a physician he trusted to the house. He told everyone David died. Then he moved him somewhere Evelyn couldn't find."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Daniel leaned against the wall.

"What happened to Dad?"

"A year later he died in a boating accident."

Claire whispered, "Another accident."

Victor nodded.

Daniel stared.

"And after that?"

"Evelyn inherited control."

"Rebecca stayed."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because she believed she could eventually prove what Evelyn had done."

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"Then why hurt Lily?"

Victor looked tired.

"Because obsession changes people."

"That isn't an answer."

"Rebecca waited almost thirty years. Then Evelyn decided to alter the trust before your fortieth birthday."

Daniel remembered his father's note.

The original Mercer trust must remain untouched until Daniel turns forty.

His birthday was nine weeks away.

"What happens when I turn forty?"

Victor looked at Ramirez.

Then Daniel.

"The original trust becomes irrevocable."

"What does that mean?"

"It means any fraudulent transfer of Hartwell shares becomes subject to automatic review."

Claire stared.

"So Evelyn is trying to replace it before that date."

"Yes."

"And if Daniel signs?"

"She can claim he voluntarily approved the new structure."

Daniel laughed without humor.

"She needs my signature."

"Exactly."

Claire looked at him.

"That's why she wanted to scare us."

Victor nodded.

"But Margaret wanted Evelyn exposed."

"By almost killing Lily?"

"Margaret believed Evelyn would be blamed."

Daniel's anger returned.

"She used my daughter too."

"Yes."

For several seconds nobody spoke.

Then Daniel asked the question that mattered most.

"If David survived, where is he?"

Victor stared at him.

"I don't know."

"You've known this for decades."

"I knew Richard claimed he survived. I never saw David again."

"Did my mother know?"

"No."

"Did Rebecca?"

Victor hesitated.

"Maybe."

Daniel stepped closer.

"Where is Margaret?"

Victor closed his eyes.

"When I discovered what she planned with Lily, I confronted her."

"At the farmhouse?"

"Yes."

"She restrained you?"

"Yes."

"Why didn't she kill you?"

"Because she isn't a killer."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"That's comforting."

Victor looked ashamed.

"She wanted time."

"For what?"

"To find the last evidence Richard hid."

"What evidence?"

"A ledger."

Claire asked, "Company records?"

"Not only company records."

Victor looked directly at Daniel.

"Richard kept a handwritten record of everything Evelyn did."

"Where?"

"Nobody knows."

"Margaret thinks you know."

"She thought I did."

Daniel's phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke.

Then a man's voice.

"Daniel?"

Daniel stopped breathing.

"Who is this?"

A pause.

The man sounded almost exactly like him.

"Don't trust Victor."

Daniel looked at Claire.

The voice continued.

"And don't go back to the Mercer house."

Daniel whispered, "Who are you?"

The caller exhaled.

May you like

"My name is David."

The line went dead.
