Chapter 14 - The Day the Vale Family Fell

They escaped the hydroelectric station with eleven minutes before its lower chamber flooded.

Grey claimed the countdown could not be stopped from the facility. Adrian transferred the archive to an encrypted drive. Olivia disappeared during the confusion, taking one of the remote access modules.

Amelia recovered both twins unharmed.

She held them throughout the journey back to the city.

Marcus sat across from her in the military aircraft.

He did not ask to hold them.

For once, he seemed to understand that wanting something did not create a right to it.

The Orion countdown continued.

Twenty-three hours.

Then twenty-two.

If the global release completed, the identities of hidden assets and protected witnesses would be transmitted across an unknown network. Some names belonged to criminals. Others belonged to people who would be killed within minutes if exposed.

Adrian insisted Grace’s designation had been manipulated.

Grey believed Voss had altered the succession system years earlier.

Elias believed the program had selected Grace automatically because Amelia’s biometric authority passed through the firstborn twin.

No one knew how to stop it.

Before the technical team began its work, federal investigators returned to the Vale mansion.

The property records, Blackridge files, Marcus’s financial crimes, and Helen’s communications were now part of the public investigation.

Neighbors crowded the sidewalks again.

News vehicles arrived before noon.

Amelia stepped from the military vehicle pushing the twins in their stroller.

General Grant walked beside her.

Detective Torres carried the property case.

Soldiers formed a protective perimeter.

Marcus, Olivia’s empty place beside him, stood on the porch under federal guard. Helen and Robert waited behind him.

The scene looked almost exactly like the nightmare Marcus had once imagined: Amelia returning with the power to expose everything.

But she did not smile.

She did not seek revenge.

She simply walked toward the truth.

General Grant stopped beside her.

“Good afternoon, Colonel Brooks.”

The soldiers saluted.

Marcus’s face went pale, just as it had during Amelia’s imagined confrontation months earlier.

Helen whispered, “Colonel?”

Detective Torres opened the case.

“We have confirmed who really saved this house.”

She placed the property documents into Robert’s hands.

He read the first page.

The mansion, the land, and nearly every valuable asset inside legally belonged to Amelia’s trust.

Robert looked at her.

“You own all of it.”

“I did not know.”

“What will you do?”

Amelia looked at the front door.

“I will surrender the property for use as a survivor support center after the investigation.”

Helen covered her mouth.

“Our home?”

“It was never truly yours.”

Marcus stepped down one stair.

“Amelia.”

Federal officers moved closer.

She raised a hand, allowing him to speak.

“I will cooperate,” Marcus said. “With everything.”

“That is not a gift. It is your obligation.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

He looked at the stroller.

“I denied my children before they were born. I allowed Olivia to convince me that your silence meant weakness. I blamed you for every part of my life that exposed my failure.”

Amelia listened without rescuing him from the discomfort.

Marcus continued.

“I don’t expect forgiveness.”

“Good.”

“I only want them to know someday that I tried to repair what I could.”

“You cannot repair some things.”

“I know.”

This time, Amelia believed he did.

Detective Torres signaled to the officers.

Marcus turned before they reached him.

“Did you ever love me?”

Amelia looked at the man she had married.

“I loved the person you promised to become.”

His eyes closed.

“That person never existed, did he?”

“He could have.”

The officers led him toward the police vehicle.

Helen stepped forward next.

“Amelia, I deserve whatever happens to me.”

“This is not about what you deserve.”

“I betrayed your mother.”

“Yes.”

“I punished you for surviving what I caused.”

“Yes.”

“I endangered Grace and Ethan.”

“Yes.”

Helen’s voice broke.

“Can I ever see them again?”

Amelia looked at the twins.

“When they are old enough to understand the truth, they may decide for themselves.”

Helen nodded through tears.

Federal agents escorted her away.

Robert remained on the porch.

He placed the property documents on the step.

“I was a coward for most of my life.”

Amelia said nothing.

“I watched Helen humiliate you. I watched Marcus betray you. I told myself silence kept the family together.”

“Silence protected the people causing harm.”

“I understand that now.”

Understanding did not erase damage.

But it was more than Robert had offered before.

He surrendered the house keys.

Amelia accepted them.

The police vehicles began leaving.

Neighbors lowered their phones.

For a moment, the street became quiet.

Then Detective Torres approached with a sealed envelope.

“This was recovered from the safe beneath the library.”

The front read VALE FAMILY INTERNAL INVESTIGATION.

Amelia turned it over.

Her father’s signature appeared on the back.

Elias stood beside the military vehicle.

He looked surprised.

“I never wrote that.”

Torres checked the seal.

“The paper is at least twenty years old.”

Grant looked at the Orion countdown on his tablet.

Fourteen hours remained.

Amelia held the envelope to the light.

Something metallic rested inside.

“We should open it at command,” Grant said.

Before Amelia could answer, the mansion telephone began ringing.

The sound carried through the open doorway.

Robert stopped beside the police car.

“That line was disconnected years ago.”

It rang again.

Amelia entered the foyer.

The others followed.

She lifted the receiver.

No one spoke at first.

Then a man’s voice whispered, “Little star.”

Amelia froze.

She turned toward Elias.

He stood across the room.

The voice on the phone was identical to his.

“You have the wrong house,” Amelia said.

“No,” the caller replied. “You have the wrong father.”

The line went dead.

Elias looked at her.

“What did he say?”

Amelia did not answer.

The sealed envelope suddenly vibrated in her hand.

May you like

A tiny light appeared beneath the paper.

The metallic object inside was transmitting.
