Chapter 11 - The Mark Beneath Grace’s Bracelet

Amelia examined both twins herself.

Military doctors had already performed full scans, blood panels, and security screening after the hospital attack. They found nothing unusual.

But Olivia’s message claimed one child had been marked before birth.

Amelia trusted evidence more than threats, yet she refused to dismiss the possibility.

Grace slept beneath a soft white blanket.

Ethan watched the overhead light with wide eyes.

General Grant stood outside the examination room while two specialists reviewed the medical records.

“No implanted devices,” the first doctor said. “No unusual injections, scars, or skin alterations.”

“What about genetic markers?”

“Nothing outside expected variation.”

Amelia lifted Grace’s identification bracelet.

A faint line appeared beneath it.

Not a scar.

A small patch of skin shaped like a crescent.

The doctor leaned closer.

“That could be pressure irritation.”

“It was not there yesterday.”

They photographed it under magnification.

Tiny numbers were embedded in the surface using a transparent medical polymer.

The sequence matched part of the Orion date.

Amelia’s blood went cold.

“When was this bracelet placed?”

“At birth.”

“Who handled it?”

The hospital system listed four authorized nurses.

One was the false nurse who escaped.

Grant entered when Amelia called him.

He studied the photograph.

“She marked Grace during the power interruption.”

“Why only Grace?”

“We don’t know.”

“Find the nurse.”

“We are trying.”

“Try harder.”

Grant accepted the anger without reaction.

Amelia picked up Grace.

The baby opened her eyes.

“I should never have allowed anyone near them.”

“You had just given birth.”

“That is not an excuse.”

“It is not a failure either.”

Amelia looked at him.

Grant lowered his voice.

“You cannot protect them by becoming incapable of trusting everyone.”

“I trusted Marcus.”

“Marcus is not everyone.”

“I trusted my father’s death certificate.”

“That was not trust. That was a lie imposed on a child.”

Amelia looked through the glass wall toward the corridor.

Elias had disappeared with Marcus. Helen had admitted betraying Amelia’s family. Robert had hidden financial evidence beneath his home. Olivia remained alive.

Every adult connected to her children carried secrets.

A secure call arrived from Detective Torres.

“We located the false nurse.”

“Alive?”

“Yes. She surrendered at a church outside Arlington.”

“Why?”

“She claims Voss ordered her death.”

“Put her on.”

The nurse appeared on the screen.

Her real name was Nora Bell. She looked exhausted and terrified.

“What did you place on my daughter?” Amelia asked.

“A tracking polymer.”

“Remove it.”

“It has already dissolved into the upper skin layer.”

“What does it transmit?”

“Nothing. It is only visible under a specific scanner.”

“Then why mark her?”

“To identify the firstborn.”

Amelia held Grace closer.

“For what?”

Nora began crying.

“I don’t know everything.”

“Tell me what you do know.”

“Voss believes the firstborn twin carries the primary Orion inheritance.”

“That makes no scientific sense.”

“It isn’t only genetic.”

“What else?”

“Timing. Birth order. Maternal biometrics recorded during delivery.”

The doctors exchanged glances.

Amelia continued.

“Where is Voss?”

“I never met him in person.”

“Where is Olivia?”

“I don’t know.”

“Who ordered the hospital attack?”

“A voice on an encrypted channel.”

“Male or female?”

“Male.”

“Did he use a name?”

Nora hesitated.

“Commander Grey.”

General Grant went still.

Amelia noticed.

“You know that name.”

Grant did not answer.

Nora looked toward someone outside the camera frame.

“I need protection.”

“You will receive it if you cooperate.”

“Voss is going to the original estate.”

“Where?”

“I only heard coordinates once.”

“Give them to me.”

Nora began reciting numbers.

A gunshot interrupted her.

The screen shook.

People screamed.

The connection dropped.

Torres called back seconds later.

“Shooter on the roof across from the church. Nora is down.”

“Alive?”

“Unknown.”

Amelia turned to Grant.

“Commander Grey.”

He looked through the glass wall.

“Samuel.”

Grant flinched at the use of his first name.

“Who is Commander Grey?”

He removed his cap.

“It was my father’s operational name.”

Amelia stared.

“Your father worked with Voss?”

“My father was Voss’s deputy.”

“Is he alive?”

“He died in prison.”

“Are you certain?”

Grant looked at her.

“No.”

The answer no longer surprised her.

Amelia placed Grace back in the bassinet.

“Where is the original Blackridge estate?”

“We never found it.”

“Nora gave partial coordinates.”

“We can reconstruct them.”

“Do it.”

Grant stepped toward the door.

Amelia stopped him.

“One more question.”

He turned.

“Did you know my father survived before today?”

“No.”

“Did you know my mother was murdered?”

“Yes.”

“And you allowed me to believe it was an accident.”

“I was following an order.”

“Whose?”

Grant looked toward the twins.

“Your father’s.”

Amelia’s face went still.

“He ordered you not to tell me?”

“He believed knowledge would make you a target.”

“I became a colonel in the same network that killed her.”

“He tried to keep you out of Silver Wolf.”

“And you recruited me.”

Grant lowered his eyes.

“I believed you deserved the truth.”

“You gave me a uniform, not the truth.”

Amelia pushed the stroller toward the door.

“Where are you going?”

“To speak to Robert Vale.”

“He is under protection.”

“So are my children. That protection has failed twice.”

“You cannot take the twins.”

“I will not leave them.”

Grant stepped in front of her.

“Colonel, this is not a request.”

Amelia looked at the soldiers beyond the glass.

Every one of them had once served under her.

“Then give the order to stop me.”

Grant remained silent.

No soldier moved.

Amelia pushed the stroller past him.

At the secure detention apartment, Robert Vale was waiting beside the window.

He looked at the twins with tears in his eyes.

“Are those my grandchildren?”

“They are.”

“May I hold them?”

“No.”

Robert nodded as though he had expected the answer.

Amelia placed a map on the table.

“Show me where Blackridge began.”

“I don’t know.”

She placed the photograph of Grace’s mark beside it.

“Someone placed this on my daughter.”

Robert’s face drained of color.

He touched the crescent symbol.

“I have seen this.”

“Where?”

“My father’s estate.”

“Give me the location.”

“The estate burned before Marcus was born.”

“Give me the location.”

Robert wrote a set of coordinates.

They matched Nora’s partial sequence.

Amelia folded the map.

Robert caught her wrist gently.

“Do not go there.”

She looked at his hand until he released her.

“Why?”

“Because the estate did not burn.”

“You said it did.”

“The fire was a cover.”

“For what?”

Robert looked toward the babies.

“To seal the lower house.”

“What is the lower house?”

“A residence beneath the estate.”

“For whom?”

Robert’s voice became almost inaudible.

“The children selected for Orion.”

A telephone rang in the apartment.

No one had used the line since Robert arrived.

He answered slowly.

Marcus’s voice came through the speaker.

“Dad, listen carefully. You need to bring Amelia to the estate.”

Robert looked at her.

Marcus continued.

“Olivia has one of the original files.”

“What file?” Amelia asked.

May you like

There was a pause.

Then Marcus said, “The file that lists which twin is supposed to survive.”
