Chapter 12 - The Estate Beneath the Ashes

The original Blackridge estate stood in the mountains two hours from the city.
From the road, it appeared abandoned.
Stone walls surrounded acres of dead trees. The mansion at the center had been reduced to a burned shell decades earlier. Collapsed beams crossed the empty windows, and blackened chimneys rose above the roofline.
Amelia arrived before dawn with General Grant, Detective Torres, Robert, a tactical unit, and the twins protected inside an armored mobile command vehicle.
Marcus had not revealed his location during the call.
Elias had spoken only once.
“Do not trust the first door.”
Then the line disconnected.
Robert led them through the ruins.
“My father brought me here twice when I was a boy.”
“What did you see?” Amelia asked.
“Doctors. Soldiers. Families who never used their real names.”
“Children?”
Robert nodded.
“Some.”
Grant surveyed the ground.
“Thermal scans show a structure below us.”
Torres pointed toward a collapsed stone staircase.
“Entrance?”
Robert shook his head.
“That is the first door.”
Amelia remembered Elias’s warning.
“Where is the second?”
Robert walked toward a dry fountain.
At its center stood a stone wolf with one paw raised.
He pressed the paw downward.
Machinery groaned beneath the earth.
The fountain basin separated, revealing a circular stairway.
The tactical unit entered first.
Amelia remained near the command vehicle with the twins until the lower level was secured.
The underground residence was larger than the mansion above.
Bedrooms lined one corridor.
Medical rooms lined another.
A classroom remained filled with small wooden desks.
On the wall, faded letters formed a sentence.
LOYALTY BEGINS BEFORE MEMORY.
Amelia stared at the words.
“What was this place?”
Grant examined the old cameras.
“A conditioning center.”
“For children,” Torres said.
Robert sat at one of the desks.
“My father said they were preparing future guardians.”
“They were creating obedient assets,” Amelia said.
A soldier called from the next room.
They found hundreds of files inside metal cabinets.
Each bore a number rather than a name.
Amelia searched the dates.
One file matched her birth year.
The label read SUBJECT 17-A.
Inside was a photograph of Amelia as an infant.
Her mother held her in a hospital bed.
A crescent mark appeared on Amelia’s ankle.
The same shape placed beneath Grace’s bracelet.
Amelia turned the page.
GENETIC LINE: BROOKS
SUCCESSION STATUS: PRIMARY
MATERNAL COOPERATION: WITHDRAWN
PATERNAL COOPERATION: CONDITIONAL
EXTRACTION RECOMMENDED
Amelia’s hands trembled.
She had been selected for Orion from birth.
Her father had not merely joined the system.
He had allowed her to become part of it.
Grant opened another file.
Subject 17-B.
The photograph showed a newborn boy born two days after Amelia.
His name had been removed.
The genetic line read VALE.
Amelia looked at Robert.
“Who is this?”
Robert stared at the photograph.
“I don’t know.”
“The child is from your family.”
“My only son is Marcus.”
Torres turned the page.
The infant had been transferred after three weeks.
Destination records were sealed.
A final handwritten note appeared at the bottom.
SECOND HEIR PRESUMED DECEASED AFTER MATERNAL REJECTION.
Amelia looked at Robert.
“Helen had another child.”
“No.”
“Before Marcus.”
Robert shook his head.
“She would have told me.”
“Would she?”
Footsteps echoed from the corridor.
Soldiers raised their weapons.
Marcus appeared with Elias behind him.
Both men looked exhausted.
Marcus stopped when he saw the twins.
His eyes filled with tears.
“Are they safe?”
“For now,” Amelia said.
He took one step forward.
Grant raised a hand.
“Stay where you are.”
Marcus obeyed.
Elias looked at the file in Amelia’s hands.
“You found your record.”
“You allowed them to mark me.”
“I tried to remove you from the program.”
“The file says your cooperation was conditional.”
“Because Voss threatened your mother.”
“Everyone claims they betrayed us because someone threatened them.”
Elias absorbed the accusation.
Marcus looked at Robert.
“Dad, Olivia says there was another Vale heir.”
Robert showed him the infant photograph.
Marcus stared.
“Who is that?”
“We don’t know.”
Elias answered.
“His name was Adrian.”
Robert looked up sharply.
“You knew?”
“Helen gave birth before she married you.”
Robert sank against the cabinet.
“No.”
“She was working undercover. The child’s father was Conrad Voss.”
Silence filled the room.
Marcus looked physically ill.
“My mother had a child with Voss?”
“Voss believed Adrian would become the Vale access line,” Elias said. “Helen tried to remove the baby from Orion. He disappeared before she could.”
“Presumed dead,” Amelia said.
Elias shook his head.
“That assumption was wrong.”
A loudspeaker activated overhead.
A man’s voice filled the facility.
“Very good, Elias.”
Elias raised his weapon.
Amelia recognized the voice from Nora’s testimony.
Commander Grey.
“Samuel,” the voice continued, “you have aged poorly.”
Grant stared at the ceiling.
“My father is dead.”
The man laughed.
“You attended a closed coffin.”
Steel doors slammed shut throughout the lower house.
The lights changed to red.
The armored command vehicle above transmitted an emergency alert.
Amelia activated the stroller monitor.
The twins were still inside.
Then the video flickered.
A masked woman entered the vehicle.
Olivia.
Amelia ran toward the stairs.
The corridor door locked.
On the monitor, Olivia leaned over Grace and Ethan.
“Do not touch them!” Amelia shouted.
Olivia looked directly into the camera.
“They are not the children Voss truly wants.”
A second figure entered the vehicle.
He removed his mask.
The man was in his early thirties, with Marcus’s eyes and Helen’s mouth.
Elias whispered one name.
“Adrian.”
The man lifted Ethan from the stroller.
May you like
Then he turned toward the camera.
“Hello, little brother.”
