Chapter 9 - A Different Kind of Family
Mara’s recovery continued for several months.
Physical therapy was painful, but she approached it with the same determination she brought to her patients. Captain Ortiz attended her first session without being asked. Colonel Shaw checked on her progress every Friday.
The settlement with the contractor was eventually finalized.
Mara refused the first offer and hired an independent attorney recommended by the hospital. The final agreement covered her treatment, lost wages, rehabilitation, and long-term medical needs.
She kept her grandmother’s house.
Instead of selling it, Mara renovated the downstairs rooms and created a temporary residence for military medical workers recovering from accidents or family emergencies.
She named it Evelyn House.
When Colonel Shaw saw the plaque, she shook her head.
“You were supposed to spend the money on something relaxing.”
“This is relaxing.”
“Renovating an entire house is not relaxing.”
“It is compared to arguing with my father.”
Colonel Shaw laughed.
At the opening ceremony, Mara returned the military challenge coin that had remained beside her hospital bed throughout recovery.
Colonel Shaw closed Mara’s fingers around it.
“Keep it.”
“I thought it was a loan.”
“It was. The terms changed.”
Mara looked at the nurses, soldiers, and friends gathered around the porch.
None of them shared her last name.
Yet they had shown up when she was unconscious, frightened, and uncertain.
