Chapter 5 - The Family Meeting
Richard demanded that the signing take place in the hospital administrative office.
He claimed the location would make Mara feel secure. In reality, he believed she would be too embarrassed to resist him in front of her colleagues.
Colonel Shaw approved the meeting without explaining why.
By ten in the morning, the office was crowded.
Richard arrived with Diane, his attorney, Mara’s uncle, two cousins, and a family friend who had been told Mara was refusing to pay her medical debts.
There were no unpaid medical debts.
Mara sat beside the wooden desk with the manila folder against her chest. The wheelchair near the wall had been brought in case her injured leg became too painful, but Richard sneered when he saw it.
“You walked in here,” he said. “Stop exaggerating.”
Diane held her phone and stared at the floor.
Richard’s attorney placed the documents on the desk.
“This agreement allows Mr. Hale to protect the family’s shared interests.”
“My settlement is not a shared interest,” Mara replied.
Richard’s voice rose.
“Without us, you would have nothing.”
Mara’s uncle shifted uncomfortably.
Richard continued, growing louder as he sensed his control slipping.
“You’ve always been ungrateful. You chose this hospital over your family. You missed holidays. You acted like your career made you better than everyone.”
“I missed holidays because I was caring for injured people.”
“And now your injury can finally do something useful for this family.”
The room went still.
Even Richard’s attorney looked at him.
Mara tightened her grip on the folder.
