Chapter 1 - Nine Missed Calls
Three weeks earlier, Mara Hale had been finishing a twelve-hour shift at Fort Hamilton Military Medical Center.
At thirty-two, Mara was known for remaining calm when everyone else panicked. She had treated injured soldiers, frightened families, and patients waking from surgery without anyone waiting beside them. She never allowed her exhaustion to become another person’s burden.
That night, freezing rain covered the roads.
Mara stayed late to help transfer a retired sergeant to a rehabilitation unit. By the time she left the hospital, most of the parking lot was empty.
She was halfway home when a delivery truck lost control at an intersection.
The collision sent Mara’s car into a barrier.
She remembered the headlights, the violent turn of the steering wheel, and then silence.
An ambulance returned her to the same medical center where she worked.
Her injuries were serious but survivable. She needed emergency surgery and remained unconscious afterward. Hospital staff called the emergency contacts listed in her file.
Richard and Diane Hale.
The first call rang unanswered.
So did the second.
A nurse left a message explaining that Mara had been involved in a major accident.
No response came.
Over the next six hours, the hospital called nine times.
At 2:17 in the morning, Diane finally listened to one of the messages. Richard sat beside her in their kitchen, reading documents from an insurance company.
The truck that struck Mara belonged to a government contractor. Because the driver had violated safety regulations, Mara could be entitled to a large settlement.
Richard did not ask whether his daughter was alive.
He asked, “How much do you think the claim is worth?”
Diane stared at him.
“We should go to the hospital.”
“Not yet,” he said. “We need to understand our options first.”
By sunrise, Richard had already contacted a private attorney.
